Ask TUAW: Old displays with new Macs, syncing folders, traveling with an iPhone and more

It's April Fools, but Ask TUAW is still dishing it up straight. This time we've got questions about traveling with an iPhone, syncing folders, using older displays with new Macs, saving bandwidth in Mail.app and more.

As always, your suggestions are welcome. Questions for next week should be left in the comments. When asking a question please include which machine you're running and which version of Mac OS X (we'll assume you're running Leopard on an Intel Mac if you don't specify). And now, on to the questions!

Teryn asks

My wife and I will be traveling to Paris in May and want to use our iPhones for data only(Maps/Travel Apps/GPS) & emergency calls. I read somewhere awhile back that you can purchase a prepaid SIM to pop in once we get to Paris, but I can't remember where I read it and cannot find where to buy one or the best way to go about this. I thought the article said you could just buy one at the Airport in Paris, but I'm not sure. Any ideas of the best way to do this?

AT&T iPhones are locked; so if you put in another service provider's SIM card it will not work. Instead you'll have to unlock your iPhone. You can find tutorials on how to do this around the net, but there is some risk to your phones, and unlocking is of dubious legality.

Furthermore, from some of my searching I suspect you will not find this to be an economical solution as far as data goes. You'd probably be better to provision the iPhone with AT&T for international travel and try to stick with WiFi for data.

Intense Action Krew asks

What's a good solution for syncing hard drives? If I create/modify files on the road, I'd like for that to be synced to the HD at home, and vice/versa. It would be great if the software was intelligent like Time Machine, and would only copy the files that have been modified, but I know this is a long shot and I'd settle for a software solution that would copy/overwrite files from destination drive -> source drive including hidden files, without any babysitting.

Time Machine won't do this for you, but there are several different folder synchronizers that will. I generally recommend ChronoSync ($40) or Martian SlingShot ($29.99). You can also check out cloud-based sync tools like ZumoDrive or Dropbox.

I have a G-4 iMac (OS 10.4.11) complete with tactile pro keyboard and Kensington Expert Mouse. I need to upgrade to an Intel-based Mac. My invalid spouse, who uses the computer for extensive e-mail and word processing, needs the flexibility to adjust the monitor in pitch (vertical angle) height, and sideways. That's the primary reason we bought the G-4 iMac PPC. The current iMacs do NOT provide that much-needed viewing flexibility, so I have been considering a Mac Mini. Is there a reasonable way to have the Mac Mini's output transferred to to our G-4 iMac so that my spouse can still keep the needed pitch, height and angle versatility?

There's no real way to connect an external video source to the G4 iMac. You can use something like Screen Recycler (€19.95) to have the iMac serve as a kind of second screen once the mini is set up, but you can't use the iMac simply as a display.

If your budget permits, though, you should consider a 24" iMac because Apple sells a VESA Mount Adapter Kit ($29) which would allow you to use a third-party VESA 100 arm to get as much adjustment as you need.

If you can't spring for a 24" iMac there is a third-party adapter ($79.95) that apparently works with the 20" iMac, though obviously I've never tested it. Finally, if you do go the mini route you may just have to consider buying a regular LCD display (20" displays are easily had for < $200) and using a VESA mounting arm.

LJKelley asks

Is there a way to make mail download only the headers in specific folders such as Junk? This would make less stress on the server, and less time waiting for emails to download that I will never open, but just glance thru to make sure no real emails are accidentally filtered by my server. I know I have it setup this way on Windows Live Mail when I'm in Windows.

Check out these suggestions from Stef Pause. Unfortunately, however, this will only work on an account-wide basis. As far as I can tell, you can't set folder specific behavior like this in Mail.app.

Timothy asks

I have a previous gen 2.2 MBP and I just ordered a new 24in iMac. I want to transfer all my music and pictures and apps, but not the user etc. Is it then best to use Migration Assistant after I've set up a new user on the iMac? Or should I do it right from the outset?

I'm not really that clear about what you're wanting to do. Why is it that you don't want to migrate the user? Anyway, yes, the Migration Assistant will allow you to choose what you want to migrate; so if all you want to move are music, pics, and apps then it's fine to run it after you have the new account set up.

Also I had the new iMac come with bluetooth mouse and keyboard will they not work for inital set up? Should I use any old USB keyboard and mouse?

Yes the wireless keyboard and mouse will work with the initial setup. If you don't have a keyboard plugged in to a USB port OS X will automatically prompt you for your Bluetooth devices.

Liam asks

I have an old Apple Studio display from my G4, is there anyway to use it as an external monitor for my original white plastic MacBook?

I assume that the Studio Display uses the Apple Display Connector? If so you're going to need the Apple DVI to ADC Adapter ($99)as well as a Mini-DVI to DVI adapter ($19). As you can see that's a rather pricey combination; so much so that you might even just decide that it's worth buying a new monitor.

How about using SyncDifferent 1.2.2 . Its really nice and you can auto-sync multiple folders on your machine (each with different sync timings). I use it to sync-up my Macbook Pro just before leaving the home office for a meeting or when I'm working at a coffee shop for the day.

I am looking to build a FreeNAS server for Time Machine. I know that setting up AFP is pretty easy, but I need to know if I can format the disks as HFS+ or if Time Machine really cares about the format.

Hi there, two question for next time:

1) In Safari 4 beta, the new "website cover flow" was introduced. Browsing the history by actually seeing a picture of the visited websites is quite helpful to me. However, all "https" sites are not being shown with such a picture. Is there a way to include the thumbnail-caching off SSL-sites as in SafarStand?
2) Regarding Mail.app: I file pretty much all my emails in specific folders, sorted by writer, topic, etc. No smart mailboxes, no tagging. So, whenever I want to file an email from my inbox, i have to drag it on a folder, wait it to sping open, revealing it sub-folders, dragging it around... Pretty slow. So I was looking for a free alternative to MSGFiler or Mail Act-On to sort Emails with Shortcuts & move them to specified folders or subfolders.

Thanks a lot in advance! I’m running Leopard on a unibody MBP.
Cheers!

Hi

I have an iPhone v1 Apple Care question.

I gave my v1 to my sister last summer, but she says the battery life is getting worse.

It has Apple Care on it and is still covered, but what happens now with Rev1 iPhones if you send them in via Apple Care?

Do they refurb them, do they have parts, or do they just send you an 8gb 3G iPhone and say "8Gb = 8Gb, enjoy" ?

Any ideas? Do they still have parts? I know this time last year rev 1 iPhones were rare then.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Big problem - please help.

I have a 24" iMac that has a mind of its' own. I set it to sleep (for the night) but it always wakes up. I then tried shutting it down, but it comes to life all by itself. How is this possible?

I would like to sleep the iMac and have it stay down until I need it. I have now resorted to shutting it down and pulling the power plug (big pain in the neck).

24" iMac (MA878LL/A) - 10.5.6

@Mitch,

There is one setting that you can "uncheck" that might fix this for you. It worked for me when I kept finding my 'closed'/sleeping MacBook Pro on in the mornings when I woke up.

Go to System Preferences.
Click Energy Saver.
Uncheck "Wake for network access".

This solved the problem for me.

Cheers!

do you have a program like EyeTV installed that would be checking to see if you had any programs to record that you can tell titantv.com to tell your computer...because I had that problem it would just turn itself on less than a hour after I left to go to work and it would start blaring the tv channel that would automatically start up when EyeTV would start...very annoying cuz my mother had no idea how to turn it off cuz she didn’t even know my iMac could do that...changing the setting in some program or the other suggestion like network access should fix it

there is some program that is telling your computer to wake up or boot up at a certain time...

it is definitely some setting that has to be changed...good luck cuz it was a crazy thing to deal with...and sometimes quite startling

As far as I know, the Apple Studio Display uses the standard VGA plug.
At least, my Blueberry 15" one from 1999 does. Not sure about the LCD versions.

AT&T to be nice, sucks about the international roaming. If you were late paying your bill within the last 90 days, they disable your roaming, though the service rep won't notice until you get there and it doesn't work. In other cases, although it should work, you may need to sign up for the AT&T World Traveler package to get service at all.

The low-bandwidth page you linked to suggests changing the options to 'only keep copies of mail that I've read' but then you can't read mail offline, plus you'll be waiting for the mail to load when you click on it. That seems to remove any advantages over a web-based client. It is, however, the best option.

Mail needs to be able to learn which folders to download and which not to, it knows only to display my inbox, and since the Gmail spam filter is near-flawless, it seems odd that they don't have a simple folder behaviours toolbar. It's taking up lots of space, I'm sure it's slowing down the startup, and I just don't want that stuff on my computer.

Check the prices very carefully before you go away. I was all set to pick up an AT&T SIM to put in my (unlocked) Canadian iPhone when I traveled to the US earlier in the year, until I discovered that AT&T charged more for data on their own network than Roger's would charge me to roam on it. I ended up getting a T-Mobile SIM, which gave me EDGE data at least, but I'm certainly glad I researched it first.

Can you give details about the T-Mobile SIM and plan you were on? I’ll be travelling to the USA and Canada later this year for several months and was hoping to be able to use a local SIM in my (unlocked) original iPhone, principally for wireless data at a reasonable price all over the country… Obviously I don’t want to (can’t) enter into any monthly contracts.

It was a FlexPay monthly plan (I was only there for 3 weeks, so I didn't bother finding out about renewal). I had to pay more for unlimited data...I don't recall exactly how much, but I do recall that the data fee was more than the cost for the minutes (I got the smallest amount of minutes I could, most of which were eaten up by telemarketers). Setting up the internet was tricky...there's a setting buried deep in there that you have to set to access their EDGE, but after bouncing around for a bit on their tech support line, I found their data card support people, who were the ones I needed to ask (oddly), and they knew exactly what I had to do. 3G has to be shut right off, but I guess that doesn't matter for you. One thing that was nice is that it worked when I got off the plane here...I don't know if that little bit of international roaming ate up the remainder of my month, but it did allow me to get a cab from the airport.

Bottom line, if your phone is unlocked, you should have no trouble. AT&T changed their data prices again recently, though, so I would recheck the exact numbers...they might have a better deal now, or at least an unlimited one.
