Changes moves to 1.5, adds new features, gives TUAW readers a discount
Changes.app, the ultimate Mac application used to track changes in folders and text files, was recently updated to version 1.5. This new version easily integrates with Coda, Espresso, BBEdit, TextWrangler, and TextMate. When you launch Changes, you will be able to install plug-ins directly into those application right from the Changes menu item.
There is a new HUD (Heads Up Display) that allows you to view changes from within the supported applications. Changes can also interface with Subversion, CVS, Perforce, Mercurial, Git, Bazaar, and Darcs for versioning control. With this new version, there is also built-in AppleScript support.
Even if you're not a developer, or don't use the applications or versioning control systems that are mentioned, you can still find Changes to be useful. Anyone, not just developers, may find it useful to be able to look for differences between two support files or folders.
You can download a 15-day free trial of Changes from their website. Single-user licenses are $49.95 each.

$49?! Dudes. DiffMerge is free, and will do 2-way diffing, 3-way file merging (for conflicts in Subversion), AND folder comparisons (though in folder compare mode, you can't sync files left to right or vice-versa.. yet, anyway).

And is plain terrible, try the demo of changes you will be happy you did.

Really? I don't think DiffMerge is horrible at all, and I've been using it. I'll give the Changes demo a try, but for $49, it really has to blow my socks off.

Changes can't do 3-way merge, for conflict resolution in Subversion. Instant fail (especially for $49).

OK, pardon my commentary, but: why do developers for the Mac insist on charging $50+ for applications that look pretty, but are quite slim on functionality? It's completely ridiculous. Changes gets the job done, but so do a dozen other apps that are cheaper and/or free. In fact, as I mentioned above, DiffMerge (free) can do 3-way merging which is used to resolve conflicts when merging files. Changes can't do this, but I'd expect it to for its price tag. Honestly I tried Changes and was not impressed, but yes, the interface was shiny.
Developers: stop it. Your apps are not worth $50. This goes for Versions, too, which can't even do branching and merging yet. These kinds of apps are worth $29 at most.

We get the point, you don't need 4 comments to say it.

I like/use Changes but my biggest criticism is that it is ridiculously SLOWWWW (and I've been using it on Intel Mac Pros). Take a couple of files that are a few thousand lines long and apply one change from one file to the other. It sometimes takes a few seconds for the change to be applied and the file to refresh.
My preferred visual diff tool is Meld (which I can't get compiled because Macports blows). Do the same thing in Meld (and in my case, on a much slower Linux box), and the change is applied immediately. And when diffing whole directories containing a few thousand files, it takes minutes in Changes where it takes seconds in Meld.
And I agree that it is pricey for what you get.

The only good thing about changes is that it integrated into Versions, Cornerstone, Coda etc. My prefered diff tool is DeltaWalker. It's easier to use, faster and has more useful features.
