Texas bans Microsoft Vista from Government Use
We're not Microsoft Windows haters here at TUAW. In fact, Microsoft makes some very fine products for the Mac including some very useful ergonomic keyboards and some terrific mice. They also make a pretty decent suite of Office applications that many Mac owners use each and every day.Heck, a guy even made a movie using Microsoft products, which we featured right here at TUAW. However, after seeing that the entire State of Texas has decided that Microsoft Windows Vista should not be used in any government agency, we might have to take a minute and reconsider our opinion on the giant from Redmond's flagship product.
According to Sen. Juan Hinojosa, vice chairman of the Finance Committee who proposed the ban, he did so because "of the many reports of problems with Vista." He goes on to say that:
"We are not in any way, shape or form trying to pick on Microsoft, but the problems with this particular [operating] system are known nationwide. And the XP operating system is working very well."
That's all well and good and for many of you Windows XP may, in fact, be working without problems. However, given the well-known issue with Vista, perhaps the Texas legislature is on to something? Who knows, given their current mindset, maybe they'd be interested in switching everyone in government to the Mac?
You hear that Apple, Texas needs you to give them a call.
(Thanks for the tip Melissa)

Hello.
I love learning new random worthless things, thanks for starting that conversation! I read it and was like, WTF, Dihydrogen monoxide is just a strange unused name for Water? http://www.mp4-converter.net
Makes a ton of sense. Mac's should be their computer! I hope they get Macs instead of PC's.

Just because it lasted this long with numerous major service packs and hundreds of updates it's decent? That right there is the problem with PC users. They are so content/accustomed with what they don't know that they believe it's acceptable. Sorry folks, any hardcore PC user who has plenty of experience with every Windows OS knows that they all are terrible.
Here's to hoping Windows 7 actually makes a change.
Classic. I am not necessarily a Windows fan, but edicts from on-high in state government about technology cause more trouble than they are worth. I work in state government and the amount of money spent meeting requirements specified by some IT board 6 levels above the agency developing or procuring technology is amazing. How can the legislature know that Vista is never appropriate for any technology be utilized by the state? Again many times options are available but a proper cost benefit analysis applied to the problem at hand is the best place for decisions like this to made not in some blanket edict. BTW I do not have or use Vista, nor do I plan to, I am just saying there may be somethings where Vista is the best choice, hard to imagine what it is though I must admit!
Silly.
It's understandable.
The same state that gave us the winnerest president: GW Bush.
Go figure, the PC in my university computer labs are being switched to Vista and so far we haven't got any troubles with it. XP is still used in VMware Fusion in the Mac(20" iMacs) labs tho... I wonder where the ban originated from?

She'll beat up a linebacker from the Steelers who tried to steal her purse, but she ain't shelling out no cash that's for sure. Linux is for them. Cheap, as in free, killer support available. Buy the hardware, buy like 4 sys admins for the whole state of texas, amazon style (who runs their whole server farm with like 8 people.)
Stay free, stay mobile.
actually, i heard the gov't of san antonio is switching to mac. maybe that will speed up some of the tedious gov't processes that usually take an eternity here.
