hey tuaw, no offence or anything, but how come engadget always says all of the apple news ahead of you guys? i mean every single time any bit of news, like this one, gets to anyone, engadget shows it off first. shouldn't a blog specialized in only apple gear be ahead in its news than engadget? i mean i still read this because you guys have really good editorials, but news wise, you guys are like a day slow.

It does make you wonder since both TUAW and Engadget are run by the same company...

same company… that's like saying all blogs on blogger have to be equally up to date. blogsmith is just the system it's on, doesn't mean they have to be in sync on the news

Yeah, they are owned by the same company sebastian. They're both owned by Weblogs, inc. Look in the right column, and scroll down to Weblogs, in Network and Engadget is right there under Technology. Either way I still love this blog.

I think the writers at TUAW probably have more than one blog/job they maintain.
Also, it's a Saturday, so if I was a TUAW writer, I'd be lazy as hell. :p

I don;t like the look of the new iPod Shuffle.
IMHO, Apple should have called it the "iPod Tampon" (since it looks like a tampon).
I do hope Apple brings back the old Shuffle (and adds Voice capability to it).

VoiceOver is going to be so awesome when it's made available to iPhone developers as an API.

Agreed.

Im not a dev or anything, but why? Like what things would you do with it?

As I understand it, one of the reasons Xroads doesn't have audible alerts is that they would have to include megs upon megs of custom audio files to be reasonably functional (in addition to the almost 1 GB of map data). VoiceOver would make text-to-speech a built-in service that would required no additional overhead. So it's likely going to be a critical part of the turn-by-turn GPS software that will arrive with 3.0. Other possibilities: Stanza / Kindle text-to-speech, spoken alarms ("your laundry is done"), reading recipe instructions when prompted by voice input..I'm sure we'll se some cool stuff.

One last note - I think putting it into the iPod shuffle, though relevant, is kind of a "public beta" release for what I can only assume is going to be a new set of tools for the iPhone. The iPod shuffle has been very functional sans-screen since its introduction, it really doesn't need VoiceOver.

1.0.1 was out weeks ago and works well. I love the new shuffle. Hopefully many of the functions (like fast forwarding and voice over) will be included in the iPhone software.

just like matt said it works well. it is definitely nothing huge just pronunciation fixes. and i love the new shuffle. the last one was just odd shaped, this one has a more sophisticated look to it.
