Nambu native Twitter client for Mac

In the most recent Ask TUAW, we addressed a question about Twitter (follow TUAW!), and asked readers for their favorite clients. Several users suggested Nambu, and having just put it through its paces, I can see why it's so popular.

Nambu is a native Mac application designed for multiple social networking services, but in practice it seems like its primary strength is as a Twitter client. It offers support for multiple Twitter accounts, which can in turn be viewed in several different ways. It also integrates support for the tr.im URL shorting service and the pic.im image service.

There's the standard list view which will automatically integrate tweets from multiple accounts into a single timeline. There's a three-pane view, somewhat similar to Mail, with a sidebar allowing you to choose between accounts, and finally (my favorite) there's a multi-column view reminiscent of the Adobe AIR-based TweetDeck and you can, of course, choose what appears in each column: main timeline, replies, sent messages, searches(!), etc.. In addition, replies are automatically threaded so they appear indented under the most recent tweet from the person to whom you are replying (as well as within the normal timeline). Another nice feature is that it automatically displays the domain of shortened URLs that appear in your timeline.

In short, I think I've found my new Mac-native Twitter client. Nambu is a free download from The Nambu Network.

I posted my first impressions on my blog. While the "things I want" list is the longest, I'm definitely impressed with Nambu and hope it matures into something even better.

I tried Nambu and saw some real promise, but had to bench it for bugs that made it completely unusable. Aside from crashing somewhat regularly, which for a beta I'm ok with, I couldn't get the app to let go of a search view in the single pane view. I'll check it out when it hits 1.0, as it did have some neat aspects.

For now I'm using Lounge, which is also beta and crashes sometimes, but at least I can change views and not get stuck

I reviewed Nambu and it gave me a lot of trouble, but it's got one glaring error when dealing with multiple accounts.

I'm itching to see Tweetie for the Mac. I currently use Seesmic Desktop.

Wow, Nambu stopped responding and crashed within 10 seconds of logging into my account, with fans blazing away. I never even got the chance to press a button. I know it's just a beta, but jeez. Bye-bye.

I liked Nambu when I tried it for awhile but got sick of the inevitable app hang which would require a force-quit. I hope they're working on that. The short-URL preload thing is a great feature.

Another thing I disliked was the too-many clicks required to launch a URL within a tweet. All other clients I've tried only need one click whether the app even has focus or not. I dislike resource-intensive AIR apps like Tweetdeck and Twhirl but so far those are the most stable and feature-rich Twitter clients. Twitteriffic is even more stable but is in dire need of a big refresh to be competitive.

Finally, the Nambu iPhone app is sort of lame, at least compared to TwitterFon which automatically segregates out @ replies and direct msgs, amongst other things that Nambu iPhone can't do.

My 2¢, worth what you paid.

Bluebird is missing a zillion features. The most basic of which is, searching Twitter. Seriously, saving the queries optional, just a basic search would be nice. And last I checked, Favorites view didn't work at all.

It's *nice,* sure, but it doesn't really do aaaanything but the raw basics.

Don't get me wrong, if that's all you need, then definitely a great choice!

Also, this is the best theme currently for it:

I actually rarely use search or favorites. But I literally just got a hold of the Tweetie private beta a few minutes ago and I am really, really liking it. If anyone wants it let me know on Twitter. My username is jack_regan.

I have used multiple Twitter clients and this is my favorite so far. The support of groups is superior to Tweetdeck (to which it compares in many ways) in the ease of adding a person to a group in multiple ways. I will be really happy when they enable ping.fm support which is currently disabled - but will be implemented.

Though it certainly is beta and will crash - but still quite usable.

Finally a Mac Twitter client that lives up to Mac software. Twitteriffic was functional, but option poor.

I've tried them all and Nambu is the best I've used. The developers are very responsive and appear to have alot of new functionality up their sleeves.
