First Look: Airfoil Speakers Touch
I'd never gotten the opportunity to use Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil prior to today, and then I found out about Airfoil Speakers Touch (link opens iTunes). Airfoil allows you to stream audio from your Mac to other devices including Apple TV, Airport Express, other Macs on your network and now the iPhone and iPod touch. We looked at a similar application not too long ago, but the definite upside to Airfoil Speakers Touch is that you don't have to go through the mess of installing a separate server application -- especially if you already own Airfoil.Using Airfoil Speakers Touch is extremely simple. I opened Airfoil on my Mac for the first time and it showed my laptop and Apple TV on my network. I then launched Airfoil Speakers Touch on my iPhone and it added the iPhone as an available streaming device. I selected iTunes as the source of my audio and clicked on the icon next to the iPhone on the Airfoil application. A quick restart of Airfoil (its Instant Hijack plug-in will bypass that) and I could stream music from iTunes through the iPhone. On the iPhone, a small image of my MacBook (complete with an image of my current desktop) appeared.
The application works beautifully. I left the laptop in my bedroom and carried my iPhone around both inside and outside of the apartment until I left the range of my wireless router. The sound is crystal clear and it turns the iPhone (and 2nd-gen iPod touch) into a great portable speaker.
However, there are a couple of drawbacks. If you exit the application on your iPhone, it will cut off the streaming. Because of this, there's no way to jump over to the Remote application and remotely control iTunes. So if you want to utilize your device as an Airfoil speaker, you need to have a playlist set up in advance since you can't change tracks from within the application itself. I'm hoping remote features will be added some time in the future. It would really make this a killer app.
Airfoil for the Mac is $25, and a free demo is available. It requires OS X 10.4 or above. Airfoil Speakers Touch is a free download through the iTunes App Store.

So, I got to thinking just a minute ago on how this could work if you had the equipment available. The biggest downfall to this whole thing is that you can't control iTunes with the app running. My biggest use of this whole thing would be to go portable with music at like get togethers and cards type of situations. Between my wife and I we have two iphones. Hook one up to a sounds system, send music to it and then control iTunes with the other. Kind of a long way around, but I just don't see the point in using the app to just listen to your music in the house. walking around. Wouldn't most people already have airport express/apple tv if they have the full version of Airfoil? I just look at this as a way of going mobile to where people don't have access points for Airfoil. I don't know. Maybe putting too much into this.
Won't it work like it should with 3.0 and apps running in the background?

I think part of the point of this is to have the ability to stream and not disturb others...say you want to watch a movie on ur macbook...and you don't want to have it stream to your surround sound speakers..you want to just listen to it thru your headphone and not be tethered to your laptop headphone jack...this way you could hear what's on the screen watching it with Airfoil Video Player on ur ipod touch or iphone ear phones
I think it is a great idea...not something that everyone will use every day but it's something nice for those that already have AIRFOIL license
What we need here is something I've been begging for for a while: Input/Output plugins for the iphone ipod app.
Input plugins could stream and control pandora, internet radio, or AirTunes speakers like this app.
Output plugins could stream out to AirTunes speakers, to the internet, also do sound effects and equalizations (Volume Logic, please!)
But as they would be part of the iphone app, it would work in the background and allow you to use other apps.
A no-brainer to me, I just wish apple would copy my idea. :)
installed both mac app & iphone app. v.poor quality even b4 10 min interference

Its free, it works over WiFi, 3G and EDGE. It is a tad laggy over EDGE but let if buffer for a bit and its fine. I can't fault it
If you stream HD music (24bit/96kHz) from iTunes to Airport Express, iTunes down-samples all the audio output to 16bit/44.1kHz. If you use Airfoil then the direct computer computer output remains HD, but I guess the Airport Express still outputs 16/44.1...

I would appreciate it, as my phone is dropping calls, and would like to see if maybe this would fix it!
Hmmm... many of you seem to be missing the point of Airfoil... the Mac app and iPhone/iPod Touch app. I've been using it for a few months, and this iPhone app is a very nice addition to a great program.
First, why Airfoil? Airfoil streams audio from your computer to Airport Express' and "Airfoil Speakers". Yes, it's true that iTunes can stream to 1 or more Airport Express units, that's about it.
What's my primary use? Whole house audio for relaxing, parties, etc. I don't have any Airport Express units. They're $99 each. While in the future I might be interested in purchasing 3-4 Express' and some semi-permanent speakers for whole house audio, Airfoil allows me to do the same thing, right now, using my Mac, my PC, an old laptop with some speakers hooked up, and now, my iPhone sitting in a Bose Sounddock. Whole house audio....4 sets of speakers... $25. The Airtunes Speakers program is free.
Oh, and not only can I play iTunes, Airfoil lets me stream ANY audio, including Pandora to my speakers.
Apple could expand functionality to do all of this, but currently, does not. That's where Airfoil comes in.
I like. This app is really just an extension of a program. It doesn't control iTunes (that's not the point) and it's not intended to let you stream music from your iPod/iPhone to your house.
Oh... and although it would be nice to be able to put this in the background and then control iTunes using Remote... that's a limitation Apple imposes.
If you happen to have a second iPod/iPhone, that works.
What I like about having this program is that I can now use my Bose Sounddock with Airfoil. Now I don't have to disassemble the Sounddock and solder on an Aux-in connection!
for me this is probably the most useful app I've ever downloaded, and the fact that it's free to Airfoil users is just 'too cool for school'. I have a radio scanner hooked up to Airfoil so now I can stream the output to my iPod without having to pratt about setting up a server or using an FM rebroadcaster. Just one click is all it takes, and the quality is unsurpassed!

1. what´s the point of streaming music from my computer to the iphone??
2. why didn´t they do it the other way around....streaming music from the iphone to the several airport express-loudspeakers in my house?! iphone+airport express would be the perfect travel-companion!
I just saw a free alternative to this some time back...... Don't recollect the name.. Will have to digg Delicious :)
