Engadget's take on the new mophie Juice Pack Air
Blogger Darren Murph over at our sister blog Engadget has posted a hands-on review and detailed photo gallery for a new extended battery pack and case for the iPhone -- the mophie Juice Pack Air.Billed as the world's lightest and thinnest extended battery pack for the iPhone, the Juice Pack Air will ship on Tuesday, April 21st, at a suggested retail price of US$79.95. It's available in the usual black and white iPhone colors, as well as purple for all of those Colorado Rockies fans out there.
The mophie Juice Pack Air (link to website) has achieved the Apple "Works with iPhone" certification, has a 1200 mAh Lithium Polymer battery to double your talk or play time, and even has an integrated 4-LED charge status indicator so you know when you're really going to lose all of your power.
Darren found that with the Juice Pack Air and iPhone mated, the total package is only .75" (19 mm) thick and adds just a tad more width and height. Whether or not that's worth it to you depends on just how much you use your iPhone.
Be sure to check out Darren's hands-on review and see if the Juice Pack Air is the battery for you!

Why do these things get released just a few weeks before the inevitable iPhone next version which probably won't fit?

What? I thought June was more than a month away. Is it earlier this year?

Even worse, why do they get released just after I lose my iPhone 3G? :-(

ARGH!!!
They need one for the iPod touch 2G.
They have one now but it is big, we need the air one.
Now.
So I can play Tap Tap 2 online for a very long time.
Not many companies are paying attention to the iPod touch, it's all iPhone, and it's annoying.

Is there a way to use AA batteries (or similar)? I go camping etc from time to time and I'd like to be able to charge up my phone...

Check out the Tekkeon 1550. It's incredibly cheap ($18 at newegg), holds 4 AA batteries and has a USB port to charge all USB chargeable devices, so the iPhone would charge via the iPod cable. Sizewise, it's obviously not gonna be integrated as a case like the mophie but its just slightly bigger than the 4 AA batteries. I've found 4 alkaline AAs will last for an extra full charge on an iPhone. Haven't tested lithium or rechargeables yet.
I just got it myself and my plan is to stick the tekkeon in a little waist level case that's on my backpack and run the cable up to the iphone which would be on the backpack strap. All so I can use a GPS tracking app during the day while on safari.

Sorry for off topic post but since you brought it up.
Rockies fans? Meh. Go Nuggets!
(Thanks Bowlen for allowing McDoof to get rid of the Broncos best player!)

I have the InCase Power Slider for the iPhone 3G.
It looks very similar (though the InCase one looks a little thicker) and the price is similar. I bought it awhile back when Mophie had the ugly only patially on, original Juice Pack.
I wonder how they compare. Anyone have both?
Thanks.

I had the incase but it stopped charging. I just got the juice pack. I have found that if you only turn on the juice pack to charge the battery then turn it back off, you dont use as much battery life since the iphone uses more energy to keep a constant charge.

No mention is made of how it affects the microphone and speaker. I can't imagine the call quality is any good with the microphone covered up

It looks like there's a hole for it, plus I can't imagine Apple would approve a "Works with iPhone" rating for a case that prevents using the microphone.

It is too bad there is not a case/battery combo this sleek for the original iPhone. I mean it is us that really need the extra juice too! I can't really complain though, my battery is doing well.

Engadget images sure look like someone has a foot/shoe fetish. The product itself looks well thought out and practical.

I just bought my first iPhone on Thursday and was persuaded to buy this case by the Apple guy helping me out. I don't usually work this way, researching everything before I make a purchase such as this. But I bought it and don't regret it. It gives some weight to the iPhone (not too much but enough that makes me feel I won't drop the phone) and it is thin enough to feel like I have a skin on it (which is what I was used to with my iTouch) so I feel secure in not scratching it. I also bought a film for the screen and it fits without any obstruction.
It does block the silence switch if you don't have the fingernails to get in there and flip it (as a nailbiter, this is bothersome for me...I have been using a pencil to turn silence off and on).
Know that it charges with its own mini-USB cord. In the reviews I read (after the fact), this seemed to bother people but I am not sure why...it works just fine. You just no longer have use for the USB cord the phone comes with.
so..no obstruction for sound and mic. And since I just bought this phone, you can imagine that I have been using the crap out of it. Battery life is pretty strong.
