Safari updates to 4.0.1

Among the flurry of iPhone 3.0 downloads, Apple has pushed out an update to Safari. Safari 4.0.1 addresses incompatibilities between the newly upgraded browser and certain features in iPhoto '09, including Places and publishing to Facebook. The download clocks in at 43.8MB and is available now through Software Update. The version on Apple's site does not reflect the update as of yet.

I just accidentally discovered you can trigger a search of your current webpage without cmd-F; just start typing and the search begins. Is this a new feature, or did I miss a meeting?

44MB? Wow. Anyone else here remember when "updates" were just a collection of what had changed, not just the whole thing all over again? It just seems weird to need an update that large for a week-old program. Some people still pay by the byte, you know.

I agree. It's easier for the companies, but not that user's friendly. Not at all actually. You have to wait longer and you cut into your monthly download limit.

On the other hand, just adding scripts will eventually take up a lot of megabytes, while re-downloading it makes sure that the programs size doesn't always mean more disk space usage.

The constant restarts after software updates remind me of Windows NT. And that ain't good.

For the person wondering about the restart, the Safari update patches the WebKit framework, which more than just Safari uses. Lots of other software use it, including iTunes, lots of 3rd party software. Updating the framework files can screw up the operation of the applications, as MacOS X doesn't support live updating of frameworks for running applications.

It's just safer to get the user to restart, to make sure all apps are using the updated framework. You can force-quit the Installer, and relaunch apps that are obviously using WebKit, but you can expect random problems to occur, that may or may not be readily linked to the update (that won't happen after you restart).

No problems installing either the Safari 4.0.1 update or Bluetooth Firmware Update on a new uMBP 2.66 15". There were two restarts related to the firmware update FYI.

Does it fix the graphic glitches? Is it just as fast as the beta was? Heck, I'm downloading it anyway.

Is anyone having issues with Safari 4 and Flash in YouTube HD? It misses frames on my unibody MacBook Pro.
