Diorama will tilt your mind
See, now this is the kind of game I want from my iPhone -- the accelerometer isn't just a gimmick thrown in with the gameplay, it's the actual premise of the game. Diorama is a weird little Marble Madness-style maze game, but the catch here is that instead of just tilting the accelerometer to move the ball (which you do), the level of the game actually moves with you, so that you get a stereoscopic kind of effect, as if the stage is real inside your iPhone's screen. Tough to explain, but as soon as you see it above, you'll know what it's like. We've seen this kind of effect before in apps like MotionX's Dice roller, but in this case, it's actually part of the game -- you can only find the paths to take around the stages by actually tilting the device. And for extra 3D viewing, there's an actual 3D mode, so if you happen to have red and cyan glasses around, you can switch on the mode for anaglyphic 3D.
The app is the first iPhone release from a company called Drömsynt, and though the initial reports on iTunes say the game is pretty tough (it is a pain navigating the quickly-moving ball around those pathways), for just 99 cents, it's definitely worth downloading, if only to see how it works. So many apps just throw in a few iPhone-specific features as afterthoughts, but it's refreshing to see a game like this (or like Zen Bound, which really depends on the multitouch screen) rely on the originality of the hardware itself.

Hoooo ! OK 3D with R n' G glasses. Ok, ok.

, it became 3D for awhile now.
Also Diorama doesn't give any control on the accelerometer and give the feel that you're playing underwater. This game IS very hard and frustrating!
Disappointing :(
Thanks for pointing this game out! I love it!
I disagree with the other commenters. This game isn't _too_ hard. It's just hard. I've played it for a day, and I've already unlocked all but one of the levels. Sure, in time, more levels and a less steep learning curve would be nice. But I'm certainly enjoying this!
The problem isn't that the physics are bad - they're just much more realistic than the easier physics of other games out there. Yes, at times I felt frustrated too, but the feeling is exactly the same as with the real-world wood mazes with the steel ball: it's not the game that's too hard, it's just that I'm not up for the challenge just yet.
So just keep trying, and think of it as a puzzle. You can only succeed if you figure out the trick to each level.
By the way - those 45 degree ramps are best tackled with speed and accuracy. Don't try to get across slowly and carefully, speed is key.
Sigh.
I sigh because I very much *want* to love this. It is very clever.
I can live without the audio...I am totally cool with the minimalism to support the effect.
But you know what it NOT gonna fly?
It is supposed to be a game...and unfortunately, it is a 1 star *game* in a 4 star execution...because it isn't any *fun*.
When people say it is "hard" they are being polite. It is in fact, damned near impossible, certainly for such a casual concept and as such, it is just not *fun*...it leaves you feeling almost like you are being toyed with, really.
The ball needs more friction at least, and it definitely needs a progression to the level of difficulty it starts with. I'm going to give them a revision to see if they respond to the feedback they are getting.
Games should be Fun First, Clever Second :)

I agree with the others that this game is impossibly hard. I would love to see what the other levels look like but I can't get past the first. The 3D effect is top notch though, especially with 3D glasses. :)
Disclaimer: I'm the developer of Anaglyphs!, another game that uses 3D glasses.
Not just hard, damn near impossible. The first level "the path" has a ramp that requires you to tilt the thing up 40 degrees while holding it rock solid along the other axis. An hour of holding my breath, and I've never been more than 1/2 of the way up that ramp -- and I can whip through all the levels of labyrinth without losing a ball.

June 18 2009 at 3:47 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyGorgeous game, though the lack of sound is a strange omission... but most importantly, it's obscenely hard. They need to adjust the difficulty, or most people who buy Diorama are going to spend five minutes on the first level before giving up completely.

"Wooden Labyrinth" game does this too and is available now - it's a little more subtle than this, but it adds an amazing sense of realism to the game.

That's for the free version; there's also a paid version for $3.99
(No, I don't work for them, I just think it's a great game with the same sort of "3D" implementation)
