Apple TV software update adds gesture support via Remote

Apple has quietly pushed out software updates for both the Apple TV and the Remote application for the iPhone and iPod touch. The update, identified as version 2.4 for the Apple TV, and version 1.3 (24) for the Remote app, adds gesture support for controlling Apple TV from your iPhone or iPod.

Our in-house Apple TV geeks, Megan Lavey and Christina Warren, both installed the updates and gave them a try. Megan indicated the gestures were quick and responsive, and coupled with the ability to use the iPhone/iPod keyboard to search for shows, the new versions made it much less tedious to navigate through your shows.

Boxee users may wish to hold off on updating, however, as it seems that you may not be able to reinstall Boxee after completing the update. Also worth noting is that the new Remote app requires the 3.0 software update to be installed on your iPhone or iPod touch.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

So, installed 2.4, re patchsticked, and everything worked great until I had to restart the finder, at which point my hacks disappeared. :-(

I find the remote.app to be extremely useless. Never used it once to control iTunes. First, you have to make sure your mac is on and iTunes must be full screen. Otherwise, you can't watch anything from the couch.

And why does it not support Front Row? It seems so obvious?

Updated Apple TV and reinstalled Boxee .Works great. Pandora on Boxee is worth it all. Hulu could be better if there were Movies available.

I love this site! I find out about the new, good sources, 101 tips that I even I did not know, etc.

It is sad that I find more and more comments here that are negative or post is this news... I could go on but you get the point.

Now to the Remote update. I updated to it and it freakin rocks! It makes getting around the Apple TV extremely easy. Another great update.

@rex: you're not alone wishing the the 3GS' voice control feature would be extended to Remote. I use Remote/AppleTV as the main source of music playback in my house, and voice control would be a welcome addition.

That said, I controlled my Apple TV more with Remote than with the little white pita, so more control via Remote was also a welcome addition.

I think back to Uncle Stevie introducing iPhone 1.0 way back when, saying that development on the O/S would continue, such as to "surprise and delight" owners throughout the life of the device. Yep, that's been my experience...

"you've been down here for 1 day, Derek. Talk to me when you've been down here for 30 years."

This zoolander quote seems appropriate.

I'd rather see the remote work with voice control. i also wish it could sense what airport express im closest to and automatically mix the music into the rooms that i walk in and out of....

The Remote app has also added a Jump Back 10 Seconds button to video playback, similar to the Jump Back 30 Seconds button in the new podcast controls of 3.0.

When will Apple open up the AppleTV to devs like they did the iPhone? I would love to be able listen to Pandora radio on there.

I'm guessing if they do this at all, they will probably retire the Apple TV and replace it with something more universal (i.e. a central media console that can do DVR, gaming, play DVDs, etc.) all in one device. They will probably then provide something similar to the App Store for it.

True, they *could* make the Apple TV do this, but unless they give it a serious hardware refresh, I just don't see it happening.

I think right now they've got a good place in the mobile gaming market, the console market is a different animal.
