iPod touch, nano might get cameras

Ah, the loose lips on those 3rd party case manufacturers. This time we're seeing what looks like an iPod case with a hole cut out for... yes, a camera. Macrumors has a few juicy shots of both nano and touch-sized iPod cases with said holes. These match up with sketches reported by iLounge back in May and rumored by HardMac before then.

Personally I think it's brilliant and logical to add a camera to the nano and I doubt a touch with video would scuttle many iPhone sales. More importantly, the touch is likely to get the same "upgrade" treatment the 3GS did: oleophobic screen and speed boost. Adding a camera just turns the touch into what people wanted anyway: pretty much an all-in-one device.

I have no interest in a cell phone, but would like the rest of the iPhone to play with; which, of course, would be the iPod Touch, except they left out the camera -- a major use of such a device would be the odd snapshot when I see something neat or documentable and I don't have a "real" camera with me -- so I haven't been tempted. I've considered getting an iPhone and just not using the phone part, but you have to pay megabucks to AT&T (or on eBay to get a "non-AT&T" iPhone) anyway, so it just isn't worth it. If the next Touch gets a camera, I'll probably buy one; I don't need gigapixels or video, an iSight like my MacBook Pro has would be fine.

Having an iPod Touch with (a) a memory upgrade (64 Gig?) and a camera that supports video, would imho, give devices like the Flip a virtual boot to the head. :)

is this any surprise? the less difference in manufacturing between the 3G/s and the iPod Touch makes costs to manufacture it much lower. I for one welcome the oncoming camera. (and it's why I got a best buy 2yr replacement plan for my iPod that I got in may, mwahaha)

I think it was silly for Apple to make the iPod touch and iPhone so similar. I wish they kept the iPod with the click wheel instead of adding one with a touch screen. Now it's hard to distinguish the two. It's hard to even consider the iPod touch an iPod anymore. If it gets a camera, the ONLY different will be that the iPhone can make calls. Although I'm sure Apple will add that too T_T. I think it was nice when it was a nice iPod with a touch screen with Wi-Fi capabilities, but then they added Weather, Stocks, etc. then apps, and now it's just a cheap way to get the iPhone.

What the hell is wrong with having a cheap way to get the phone? Why should I be forced to pay the huge monthly fees and be stuck with ATT in order to enjoy all the great great functionality and apps of the iPhone that have absolutely nothing to do with a cell network? The phone is only 10% of the usefulness of the iPhone in my opinion, especially now with the app store, so I think it would be downright cruel to deny people access to the other great 90% of functionality if they didn't want to stop using their perfectly fine non-smart phones.

As was the case with the iPod touch second gen upgrade. I wouldn't be suprised if the third gen got a bigger upgrade than the 3GS. Because of the turnaround time for cell phone approval, iPhone hardware has to be finalized well ahead of time. Since the iPod touch doesn't have this problem, maybe they'll get even hire specs. Those 3.2 or 5 megapixel camera modules that apple was buying batches of perhaps?

I would love to see an iPod touch with everything the iPhone 3GS has, obviously without a cell radio. GPS and a camera would be sooo sweet!!

This is the one killer feature the touch is missing. Even if the camera didn't do video this would be great, particularly for those who want an iPhone but don't want a contract phone.

I got the 3GS so my "old" 3G is essentially a Touch with a camera. Now if only the GPS capabilities of the 3G would still work without it being active as a phone. Now Maps only works with a WiFI connection. How is it that GPS units like Garmin work differently - no need for wifi or cell networks?

they have the maps pre-loaded onto them, so they don't dynamically download them, as in the case of iphone

the GPS does work when there's no reception or SIM card inserted.

i tried it while hiking out in the mountains. the iphone gave me a GPS coordinate. of course the map wasn't loaded, so it's a big gray grid.
