Palm Pre owners: Mark/Space has a Missing Sync for you

The Missing Sync line of software from Mark/Space has been around long enough that just about every handheld operating system made can now sync data with a Mac. As a result, it's not surprising that Mark/Space has announced Missing Sync for Palm Pre.

The $39.95 Mac application (also available in a two-license Business Edition for US$89.95) starts with the usual tasks of syncing contacts and calendars whenever you're in Wi-Fi range of your Mac, but then adds syncing of music, videos, podcasts, and photos to the mix. There's a built-in ringtone editor for creating your own ringtones from your music, and syncing PDF, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents is a snap.

If the screenshots of the application are any indication, Missing Sync for Palm Pre uses the tried and true user interface found on its siblings. Mark/Space has also announced that they are developing a Fliq app for Palm Pre (four Fliq apps are currently available for iPhone) to provide syncing of Safari bookmarks.

I'm sure there are a few Palm Pre owners out there who read TUAW; if you're one of them, could you let others know how this product works by leaving a comment?

For some of you, syncing via Google's sync options (at least for calendar and contacts) could be a way depending on the smartphone you intend to use.
Drawback: Google acts as a third party to the sync process being a possible source of further problems.
Advantage: It's like "unwired" syncing wherever you are. Since your Mac as well as your phone (e.g. BlackBerry) connect to the Google servers via their own internet connection, you never need to physically connect your Mac with the phone.
I have not tried it out yet. Blackberry is a much too mediocre smartphone platform that I have decided against investing any more time to set this up. Soon I wish I will be able to get back to Nokia's excellent Symbian S60 3rd edition platform.

I used Missing Sync for my old Treo's, and it worked flawlessly for years, even the iTunes playlist sync worked to throw a bunch of music onto my SD card. However... I STILL have not gotten the Missing Sync for iPhone to work even once. even after the update. Now that I've learned that iPhone backups in iTunes backup EVERYTHING, including SMS. settings, and notes, etc... [except passwords, yay security!] I never worried too much about it. Though paying for a program that never worked kind of irks me, especially for what now seems to be a solution in search of a problem, I still hold out hope for the Palm Pre version. I'm eventually going to be adding one to my stable of cell phones, and will be getting The Missing Sync in hopes that it bring the Palm love like it's Garnet and earlier siblings did.

Yeah, I think it was about two years ago. They put out a really buggy windows mobile product. But, they did eventually release updates. Believe me, I remember this as I had to live thru it. Anyway, their missing sync for windows mobile phones is working great now (at least as of a month ago).

But now I have a Pre. And missing sync is really very nice, especially because I do not want to use Google or Facebook to store all my contacts. I want to keep them on my Mac.

Why don't you just plug up your device to your computer ? It's real simple and it works for me!

That is why the iPhone was born. Apple had tired of all the problems associated with syncing any phone to a Mac. They wanted something that looks and works like a Mac, simple and user friendly.

I have used different Palm and Windows Mobile devices and never been satisfied. None of them worked properly with my Apple computers.

iPhone made a huge difference! Thank you, Apple.

What a joke! If a company relies on third-party buggy software to allow a share of their customers to do something as simple as syncing then you need to ask yourself: Why?

I've used Missing Sync back in the day for countless Palms, Treos and even a Clie. It works but it's inconsistent and its a pain for the person who isn't tech savvy (yes, there's lot of them out there).

I say if you're a Mac person, get an iPhone. There's nothing better.

I used Missing/Sync for Palm (the old PalmOS) and for Windows Mobile. It was a buggy and annoying piece of software. Do not expect it to work flawlessly -- expect nasty surprises, deleted data, duplicated contacts, crashes. Expect to spend time "managing" your missing sync software and your phone instead of getting on with your life.

Their support is completely useless. I spent a lot of time trying to report a bug having to do with non-ascii characters in names and all I was getting were canned replies ("please reset, please reinstall, please restore"). The bug report never even made it to a developer, in spite of my efforts. In fact, it was one of the worst and most annoying support experiences I've ever had. I still have a TODO on my list to write a blog post about them, they've annoyed me so much.

Oh, and here's an example from a Mark/Space support reply:
"Punctuation in Address Group names, and calendars is across the line. We recommend, not using them."

This was in response to my bug report about missing sync choking on calendars created by OmniFocus which were named "OF: something".

Don't buy from Mark/Space.

I have Missing/Sync for the BlackBerry and it's plop (not as bad as PocketMac though). Not to mention that for new features you have to buy the software all over again; no upgrade pricing.

I have to say that although MarK/Space sits comfortably on my very short list of the worst Mac developers I've ever encountered, they are a distant second to PocketMac. That application actually hosed two OS installs (only time I've ever seen that happen) and the support staff was confrontational at best. Rarely have I ever been scolded for asking for help.

Again this experience was back in the early days of these applications and I do appreciate the complexity of what they're trying to do here. Both Mark/Space as well as PocketMac are essentially reverse engineering this stuff.

Trouble is, none of it actually worked.

One license for $40, two licenses for $90. My brain is about to explode!

I have always sworn by my iphone. but last month I switched to the Palm Pre for the MUCH cheaper monthly plan. I love it. This Missing Sync is AWESOME. I have never used this software on older phones but it was so easy to use for the Pre it pretty much synced itself. As a mac user it really makes it easy to sink all my ical calendars, my address book, and anything else I want to sync. Whats great is if I add contacts or calendar events through out the day, the moment I walk in my house I wirelessly sync the phone to my comp and its updated on my macbook pro.
