Apple has 91 percent revenue share of premium market
Apple's quarterly earnings aren't the only bits of good news going around: according to Betanews, the market research firm NPD has found that Apple's revenue market share in the premium price segment (computers costing $1000 or more) is 91 percent, up from 88 percent in May.Not only is this good news for Apple, it is a continuation of a positive trend: their premium revenue share is way up from the first quarter of 2008, when their cut was about 66 percent. However, most original equipment manufacturers and Microsoft prefer to measure success by unit market share, or how many individual computers were moved regardless of price. Gartner and IDC place the unit market share of PCs running some version of Microsoft Windows at 90 percent, while Macs have 8.7 percent.
Breaking down the numbers, this news isn't too surprising. According to NPD, the average selling price of a computer sold at retail in June was $701. Splitting this figure into Macs and PCs gives an ASP of $515 for any Windows PC sold. A Mac, on the other hand, has an ASP of a whopping $1400.
Considering that Apple chooses not to wage the netbook price war and that the bulk of PCs purchased cost less than $1000, it makes sense that Apple would control the premium segment. They were also able to boost their sales figures in this bracket by lowering the high-end prices $100 or more on each model while keeping all but one computer in the $1000+ segment. But hey, we'll take good news however we have to slice it, right?

For a completely different perspective that what you will read here, surf over to Betanews and read the comments there.

It is like falling thru the looking glass.
There are some very defensive MS/PC fanboys out there.

Wow, yes there is.

My favorite comment is the one by "bskdopeboy"...
Halfway through...
"If you're such a retard to think macs are that much better because the OS is well written, continue to think that and live your life in the clouds."
The parting shot...
"Window 7 will change the way of everything, cuz it's actually really, really great!"
Sooo... a superior OS is of no consequence, until Windows makes such a claim? I couldn't write a better ignorant troll comment myself! :-D

Doing a bit of arithmetic, Apple's revenue market share of all personal computers (including low end PCs and netbooks) sold in the last quarter was more than 26.3%.
That's pretty amazing!

Its no wonder. Apple makes the best hardware, and their software is pretty good too. If someone had $1000+ to dump on a computer, they would be complete idiots to not get a Mac.

How do they make the best hardware? Whether or not the iPod/iPhone are the best that there is in their respective markets is debatable, but I see nothing that differentiates Mac hardware other than a higher pricetag. I have to agree with you on the software, OSX is a thing of beauty for sure, but why would someone be a complete idiot to not get a Mac when then have $1000? For $1000 I could go onto Newegg and buy parts to build myself a monster PC and then put Linux on it. Or I could buy an entry-level Mac. Why would I be an idiot for choosing to get a whole lot more bang for my buck? Mactards like you give all the sensible Mac users (who recognize that they pay a premium for design aesthetics and a nice OS) a bad name.

Wow, Rob. Take a breath and calm down. While I agree that Apple isn't without its flaws, the build quality on a 15" MacBook Pro is pretty incredible.
Assuming you don't get a defective one.

While I agree macs are beautiful elegant and have the best os around, they are just as susceptible to hardware issues. My wife's MacBook hard drive failed in 6 months and my mother in laws failed twice in 4. Because apple's customer care is awesome, they were both replaced and my wife actually got an upgraded MacBook as they had just refreshed the line, but to say the hardware is superior might be a bit of a stretch.

First off, don't go around calling me (or anyone else for that matter) a "Mactard." Truth be told, I don't even own a Mac (but I'm in the process of saving up to buy first one), but I know what my eyes tell me from visiting my local best buy; no PC manufacturer makes hardware that is as elegant, sleek, or (for lack of a better way to say this) solid feeling. I wasn't really talking about specs or reliability (like I said, I myself have never owned a Mac), just the over all design and aesthetics of the machines. In retrospect, I realize that idiot might have been too strong a word, and if I offended you or anyone else, I'm sorry. I'm not trying to give all you "sensible Mac users" a bad name. I'm just a Mac noob trying to better understand the platform and the whole "Mac/Apple Culture".

rob: not that many people _want_ to build a pc w/ linux. they want computers to work. out of the box.
regarding build quality: my 400 mhz g4 tower, powerbook g4 1ghz, my daughter's ibook are old as hell and run as good as the day i bought them (just like my mbp i'm typing on).

Apple excels at earning profit. Some PC makers lose money on netbook sales. Apple has great design sense and a sensible straightforward product lineup. Mac hardware is the same as PC hardware. If it wasn't Macs couldn't run Windows.

That's because Apple uses Intel chips. That's ONE aspect of the computer
To say the Mac 'hardware' is the same as PC hardware ...is a flat out lie.
Apple has designers.

I think you guys are confusing build quality versus components that are located within the machine, which I see happening quite often. To be clear, most of the components are the same and can and do break just like "pc's" do, however the build quality of macs in general is far superior, just my opinion. To that degree, the exterior build quality along with HOW components are rooted to the machine can and usually does make for a more dependable experience overall.

In recent years I've built my own PCs, except for laptops, Dell XPS Gen 2 being the last one I bought 4 years ago.
Now I work in the creative business - I'm a 3D visual FX animator. And I need great hardware that performs, is reliable and long-lasting (so good support is a plus).
The PCs I build are great - for $1k I can build a really nice, up-to-date machine. But when things go wrong, I have to deal with it myself.
Three years ago I bought a Mac Pro, and I swear I've never looked back. I still use my PCs, since the software I use is spread between Mac & PC anyway, but for pure peace of mind I can't fault the Mac. The OS, Apple's approach to software pricing (they price software lower than MS because they make the money from the hardware), high standards and user experience is second-to-none.
I recently bought myself and my wife a Macbook Pro and Macbook (late 2008 unibody editions) and my god they are incredible.
My XPS Gen 2 is like an unwiedly, unfriendly troll in comparison. A friend has a more recent Dell model (renamed to M series), and it's not much improved.
Apple are clever. They have a plan, and it's working. Microsoft...they can't seem to settle on a plan, they're like headless chickens and they seem to have forgotten what business they're in. "I'm a PC"? Er, Macs are Personal Computers too. It should have been "I'm a Windows user".
They missed a trick. They're missing lots of tricks. They've lost the plot...the X Factor is no-where to be seen.
I'll continue to buy expensive Macs because I want an easy life in my advancing years, and don't want the stress of fighting against an operating system. And I'm not made of money. These aren't Ford vs. Ferrari prices...they're more like Ford vs. BMW... but the quality really is Ford vs. Ferrari.

Running in my house right now are a Dell desktop, a Dell laptop, a HP laptop, and a Mac laptop. My Mac laptop is a work machine I was issued, the rest I bought based on price. The next laptop I buy for my own use will be a Mac. There is only one reason... I can close the top of my Mac and when I open it back up it is right where I left off. In the four years I've had my work Mac I've gone to "shut down" MAYBE twice a year. I can't even leave my Dell laptop alone overnight or it goes into freak-out mode. I'm lazy, so I'll get a Mac - it caters better to my laziness and my desire not to have to re-open projects and figure out where I left off every day.
