CUPERTINO, California-July 23, 2009-Apple® today announced a significant update to Final Cut Studio® with more than 100 new features and new versions of Final Cut Pro®, Motion, Soundtrack® Pro, Color and Compressor. Final Cut Studio features Final Cut Pro 7 which expands Apple's ProRes codec family to support virtually any workflow and includes Easy Export for one step output to a variety of formats and iChat® Theater support for real-time collaboration. Motion 4 includes enhanced tools such as 3D shadows, reflections and depth of field for stunning motion graphics and visual effects, and Soundtrack Pro 3 features new multitrack audio tools to streamline audio post production. Color 1.5 includes better Final Cut Pro integration and support for full color resolution, and Compressor 3.5 adds new features that make it easy to set up and customize your export options. At $999, the new Final Cut Studio is $300 less than the previous release and is also available as an upgrade for just $299.
"With 1.4 million users and 50 percent of the market,* Final Cut Pro is the number one professional video editing application," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "The new Final Cut Studio includes more than 100 new features and dramatically expands Apple's ProRes family of codecs so editors can work in the studio with the highest quality video or on location at low bandwidths."
Final Cut Pro 7, the latest version of Apple's Emmy Award-winning editing software, includes new versions of Apple's ProRes codecs to support virtually any workflow with the addition of ProRes Proxy, for offline and mobile editing at low bandwidth; ProRes LT, for general purpose editing; and ProRes 4444 for editing and visual effects at the highest quality possible. Easy Export allows users to continue working on projects while encoding is done in the background and the sequence is exported to YouTube, MobileMe™, iPhone™, iPod®, Apple TV®, DVD or Blu-ray. iChat Theater support allows real time collaboration by sharing Final Cut® timelines or individual source clips with iChat users anywhere in the world, even if they don't have a copy of Final Cut Pro. Other new features include new speed tools to change clip speed with ease, alpha transitions to create dramatic effects using moving mattes, and native AVC-Intra support for the latest high quality Panasonic cameras.
Motion 4 extends award-winning, easy to use animation tools so video editors can quickly create everything from basic titles to animated credit rolls to stunning motion graphics. Enhancing 3D compositions is faster than ever with new customizable features that add point and spot lights to cast realistic shadows or turn any shape, video plane or paint stroke into a reflective surface. Motion 4 gives editors the flexibility to adjust the depth of field within a 3D canvas by selectively highlighting a single object or using multiple objects to create a racking focus effect.
Soundtrack Pro 3 adds powerful new audio editing tools including Voice Level Match which extracts volume information from the vocal content of one clip and applies it to another without altering any other audio content so editors can easily correct mismatched voice levels. An enhanced File Editor includes new tools to make sophisticated edits and fine tune volume adjustments by targeting specific frequencies such as the rustle of a paper or the bump of a desk without affecting dialogue. The new Advanced Time Stretch feature stretches and compresses audio with incredible precision using three Apple-designed algorithms or other algorithms available as third party plug-ins.
Color 1.5, Apple's easy to use professional grading application, now works with a greater range of sequences and effects from Final Cut Pro and an integrated workflow allows editors to complete projects entirely within Final Cut Studio. New 4K support works natively with files from cameras such as the RED ONE and outputs directly to ProRes for HD or DPX for film. Expanded support for new high quality formats includes AVC-Intra, XDCAM 422 and ProRes 4444, for grading with the maximum amount of color information.
Compressor 3.5 makes encoding and delivering in multiple formats easier than ever with the ability to automatically detect QuickTime® settings and create an Easy Export template or a mini "droplet" on the desktop that automates specific Compressor actions. New, customizable sharing options make it easy to publish to YouTube and MobileMe, or export for iPhone, iPod, Apple TV and mobile phones. For the highest quality HD material, menu templates and encoding presets make it fast and easy to create Blu-ray discs. Final Cut Studio also includes DVD Studio Pro®, a powerful DVD authoring environment with drag and drop tools, on screen editing and real time previews.
Soundtrack Pro and Compressor are also available as part of the new Logic Studio®, allowing Final Cut and Logic® users to collaborate and share files.
Apple today also introduced Final Cut Server 1.5, the asset management and automation tool for Final Cut Studio. Final Cut Server 1.5 includes powerful new features like lightweight, offline editing with ProRes Proxy, production hierarchies to organize media, and support for still sequences to easily view and manage image sequences for graphics and effects workflows. Final Cut Server now includes unlimited client licenses and is available for $999 or as a $299 upgrade for existing users.

Despite Apple's attempt to make me consider my perfectly decent G5 Quad Core Obsolete...FCS3 does indeed work on my machine.

It's thru that there isn't much mind blowing with the new updates.
BUT
There many things that changed for the better. You know the feeling when you edit and you just think " Why can't I just do this in one step instead of first render it and have to fine-tune this or work around that in order to do something simple.
Why it is good:
1) No more rendering after trimming or moving clips (timesaver)
2) No more waiting while exporting clip(s)
3) cheaper: I never took the upgrade to studio 2 because it came 2
4) variable speed change made easy.
months after I recieved FCS 1. So now I can get FCS 2 with benefits. I get Color and all upgraded programs for just 299â¬. that's awsome because now the extra money I had saved for FCS aka FCS3is still there to buy BDburner.
The Blue ray thing is wierd. Why would I only want to use apple templatte menus in a pro app?
I guess we will have to wait for authoring when apple can buy a stand-alone BD authoring program and make it there own. I would bet there 's a big chance for any company who would create BD authoring software for OSX to get bought by Apple. Like they did with color.
If I should name this bundle I would call it FCS 2plus.
And when they give the 64 bit ability than we can speak of a FCS 3.
I wonder what apple is going to call the next edition, if they now use FCS only for there product.
I think the upgrade is worth it. Background rendering is great, but that means I will have less time to surf the net at work ;)

And why no upgrade to DVDSP?
I'd gladly pay $300 just for the background rendering. In our production environment we loose too many hours because a system is locked rendering. Everything else is gravy.
July 24 2009 at 1:28 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyand whoever said the new updates isnt worth 300 bucks is crazy. The value you get for 999 considering Color was 25,000 dollars stand alone just dont get it/ If you edit at home you may not see this as a big update but if you work professionally than youll get it. It is way better than premiere for video just because of the apps you get, and who comparing premiere? it 1000 dollars alone, lol. VALUE VS COST PEOPLE. Adobe wants WAY to much. Whoever says its a small update dont know video editing very well at all. Premiere is clunky, the dvd burring is clunky as well as exporting. No pro res either. I like premiere bur for 999 there is no choice. One app or 6? Why they charge that much when everyone knows FCP is better or at least just as good. Because adobe dont care about selling hardware.
July 23 2009 at 10:09 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI think the upgrade is well worth it.
As for premiere cost, realistically it's much cheaper since you can get it as part of a production suite for $1400, that includes after effects photoshop and illustrator amongst some other great tools. So they sit pretty much in the same boat price wise.
I agree that premiere rendering can be a pain in the ass, it does work just fine with prores however.
I have a love hate relationship with prores, on ne hand it's an amazing codec, on the other i can't omit to it since a lot of people in my industry use other tools like avid, premiere on PC workstations. ProRes doesn't fit in those workflows. Still prores is pretty awesome.
This is a earth shattering update, people just dont get it at all.
All new features in FCP, since FCP 5 onward, have been written in Cocoa - HDV Log and Capture, Log and Transfer, Multicam, FXplug (that I know of) are all Cocoa.
Yes Compressor does support burning on blu ray burners, You can even use a template. You can also burn blu ray straight from within FCP if you have a burner. DVD studio pro cant handle blu ray. Creating professional menus and extra content on blu ray , i hear, is beyond dvd studio pros capability. A bluray works different than a dvd. Just look at the interactivity blu ray gives you during viewing. Its a different game. Go find and price any blurray authoring software that can make custom disks. Not toast, somethign that uses pre made templates. but actually making your own disk menus etc. With Motion you have no need for livetype. Perfect for FCE.
I'm more of an audio guy that a video guy, so I don't care about Final Cut as much as I do Logic Pro. I'm not so happy with this Logic Pro update. I mean, there's some good looking stuff in there, but not 200 bucks worth of good stuff to me. Logic 7 -> Logic 8 was a massive improvement. However this update seems more like it should be Logic 7.5 or something.

July 23 2009 at 4:41 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDavid, I'd like the ability to render a 4K final from final cut without going through EDL's. Sort of like color does it.
The way premiere interprets RED raw files is it lets you work on a smaller screen version without making low res proxies. That is a nice solution, with final cut i can find soem workarounds as i do now, but i can't render things out when i am done.
It does sound like it will be better if color can do it, at least i know the EDL files will be compatible, but really for a next gen product it should be in final cut.
Since it is in Color and not the editor it suggests that they haven't figured out how to make it work in their current architecture.
Isn't Premeire just making proxies on the fly?
The EDL process isn't as intimidating as you might think. Apple has made it pretty easy, you just use the "Send To" feature back and forth. You can reconform from XML if you need to.
Thats the beauty of premiere with the redcode codec, it jsut reads the file much like a proxy at the resolution it need, but doesn't generate intermediate files. It looks like Color will work that way.
As for EDL's there is sometimes issues, we had issues with certain fades breaking time code and such. Maybe this will be gone with color in the game. I'm guessing i can bring stuff to Color now without adding any effects and render it out from there. Most of my grading will happen in after effects. Right now after effects like premiere can load the native red files and so adjustments on the fly.
As a side note the premiere thing is still rough around the edges, not perfect, resolution changes require program restarts and such, but it works in one go.
I work for a studio that makes commercials for movie theatres. We also shoot elements for productions.
Considering Final Cut wants to consider itself a professional solution it is a let down. Missing those features it is a nice app but not a complete production app. What final cut is a pretty good interface and editing workflow, although after test driving premiere i realize those two programs are 90% similar, same tools almost same design (not a surprise considering final cut was designed by former premiere engineers).
Now final cut express doesn't need those features.
