Ask TUAW: AirPort Extreme bridge, iTunes smart playlists, USB drive backup, and more
Welcome back to Ask TUAW, our weekly Mac troubleshooting Q&A column! This time we've got questions on using an AirPort Extreme as a wireless to ethernet bridge, automatically backing up a USB flash drive, building smart playlists in iTunes, migrating an iTunes Library and more.As always, your suggestions and questions are welcome. Questions for next week should be left in the comments. When asking a question please include which machine you're running and which version of Mac OS X (we'll assume you're running Leopard on an Intel Mac if you don't specify). And now, on to the questions.
Mike asks
Is it possible to use an AirPort Extreme as a wireless-to-ethernet bridge? Like, connect the router to an existing wireless network and then allow devices that are wired to it access to the network? (Specifically, I'm moving to a new place that already has a wireless network and my Xbox 360 and file server will be too far away to directly wire into the router.)
Yes, this is possible if you're also using an Apple router (this may not be absolutely necessary, but will make it much easier). You'll need to set up your AirPort Extreme as what Apple calls a WDS remote station. This is done through the AirPort Admin Utility as described in this Knowledge Base article.

I have a Leopard question. My old iMac G4 runs at 1Ghz, and is upgraded to 768 MB of RAM. It's currently running Tiger (10.4)...Is it worth upgrading that Mac to Leopard? I know about the new features-what I mean is, will it be a slower system than it is with Tiger, the same, or faster? I know it surpasses the minimum specs for Leopard-I'm asking about whether it'll be sluggish, and overall a worse experience than Tiger...
While I can't claim any personal experience on the question, I suggest you check out this report from Low End Mac. The upshot is: yes, it's worth it to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard on a G4, particularly if you can bump the RAM (and boot disc speed), though it may be a touch slower.

I have an unencrypted USB flash drive that goes with me between home and work. It's not mission-critical or extremely sensitive information so I'm not worried about it falling into the wrong hands but I'd be missing a lot of needed files if the drive went missing. What I'd like to do is set up an automatic backup of the drive's contents each time it is mounted in OS X, preferably archiving the files as a zip on my iMac's hard drive. I'm fairly positive this can be done with a folder action applied to the drive's volume but I don't possess the AppleScript prowess needed to make this happen. Are there any utilities or resources out there that can solve my problem for me? I've tried searching but with little success.
Well the easiest way to accomplish the syncing part is with ChronoSync ($40) which has a USB backup feature built-in. However, if you're willing to get your hands dirty, have a look at this tutorial. This trick uses Do Something When to trigger a rsync shell script. It should do more or less what you want, though it would be an additional step to get everything compressed into a zip file. For some help on that, check out this older hint at Mac OS X Hints.

I am starting to get the hang of playlists in itunes; Specially smart playlists. My problem is that I also record lectures with my iphone with the new voice record app. its great that it syncs with itunes but sometimes they show up on my smart playlist....I know I could tag all of them as lectures and then exclude anything that has lecture as a tag or w.e however, is there anyway I can exclude them like you would for a podcast? without having to touch the lecture files?
If you look in iTunes you'll see that it has automatically created a "Voice Memos" playlist for all of your synced recordings. So all you need to do is modify your smart playlist to exclude anything that appears in the "Voice Memos" playlist by adding the following condition:

Macbook Server? clarifies
I failed to explain myself very well on my first question. I need to transfer my iTunes library over to the macbook that I want to use as the server. so, a zillion apologies, but let me try again: what's the best/easiest/smartest sway to transfer an iTunes library over to another computer. I want to maintain the playlists, album art, song-play counts, and all other info. for instance, can it be done over wifi lan? the only apple guide I can find advises to "archive" it to a bunch of cd/dvds. or, it describes how to do a preposterously complex thing involving an old ipod.
Perhaps the easiest way is to use the built-in Migration Assistant as described here, though this supposes that your MacBook has a FireWire port so that you can put it in Target FireWire Disk mode. If it does not, you can manually move your iTunes Library by copying the ~/Music/iTunes folder. This can be accomplished over the network with file sharing, with an intermediary drive (i.e. copy to an external hard drive then copy back on the other computer), with a direct ethernet connection, or with Target FireWire Disk mode. Just make sure you've consolidated your iTunes library first.

I'm looking at setting up an OS-X Server box for a small site and am wondering what of the standard OS-X apps, iPhoto, Mail, APerture, Safari, etc I can run on the box with the Server OS installed? Just trying to keep costs down by sharing a machine for mostly Server use but also some desktop use. I'm looking at a Mac Pro to run this on or even maybe a iMac or Mac Mini, any thing I need to watch out for?
Anything that runs on OS X client should run just fine on OS X Server. Back in the day there was a problem with iLife, but on Leopard I don't think you'll have a problem (though keep in mind that you probably shouldn't do anything on the machine that will interfere with services for the clients).
Dan asks
What is the easiest way to do this: bring a video made in the iPhone BACK to the iPhone? As far as I can tell, there is no easy way to get the videos you create BACK to the phone once they are synched - very frustrating...it brings the videos into iPhoto... and then it won't synch them via iPhoto's album - you have to bring them into itunes you have to open the iPhoto library package, copy the file out of it and then import it into iTunes.
I'm not entirely sure what you're looking for. In any case, I will offer a couple of observations. First, to copy videos from iPhoto back into iTunes you don't need to use the Finder to open the iPhoto Library package; a simple drag and drop from iPhoto to the iTunes Movies category will work. Secondly, you don't have to use iPhoto to import the videos from the iPhone. You can also use the Image Capture application, download the videos to a folder, then drag and drop from the Finder into iTunes.

new iMovie user running a 13" MBP. recent pc to mac convert. i'm working on doing some basic video editing, and running across a difficulty in approach or thought process, i guess.
i have a 2 minute video clip and i just want to remove a portion (about thirty seconds) from the middle and have the two portions around the middle fuse into one 1:30 clip. i've been checking the help files and the tutorial videos, but they always seem to treat it the opposite way: select the first 0:45, copy that to the project, then select the last 0:45 and add that to the project. that works fine for this clip, but i also need to be edit out small few-second portions from hours long clips. there's no way i'm going to sit there and drag to highlight 45 minutes worth of movie before a tiny edit and then select the last hour plus of a movie just to clip out 10 seconds.
there's probably an obvious way to do this, but i'm missing it. maybe it's a conversion blindspot. i used to use the avs software on my old pc to do this (they have a frame-selection editor).
thanks

Move the playhead to the start of the point you want to clip out, and split the clip. (I think it's under edit). Move the playhead to the end part of the bit you want to clip out, and do the same. Delete the clip in the middle.

A friend put together a really slick way to backup USB drives (works on any drive actually).
here is a link:
http://www.macosxhints.com/comment.php?mode=view&cid=84940
copy the scrip into an apple script then follow the instructions below:
1. From "Finder" select "Go to Folder..." under "Go" menu
2. Enter: /Volumes
3. Control-click in "/Volumes" window until pop-up menu appears
4. Select "Attach a Folder Action..."
5. Select the script file within the "Choose a File" window.
You should have your script in the folder ~/Library/Scripts/Folder
Action Scripts"
6. Enjoy your script.
you will also need to replce Disk_1 with the drive name.
I have a modified version that backs up any drive less than 16GB upon mounting the drive to OSX. It works really great and I have never had any problems with it. I am not that great with Apple scripting but it is easy enough for a beginner.

I think that what Dan (in the last question) was referring to, is that even though you can add movies to iPhoto albums, when those albums are synched back to the iPhone, only the pictures appear.
So, if you want a home movie back in the iPhone, there is no way but adding that video to iTunes library as an independent movie, and then syncing the iPhone.
Even worse, once you have that movie on the iPhone, it can't be played as part of the photo slideshow, which only has pictures. So you have to exit "Photos" and go to "iPod" and select videos, to have your home video shown. Not intuitive at all.

That's what I got out of his question too. I don't know what was confusing to tuaw. But that sucks that videos go into "movies" in the iPod section.

In the last tip, in the sentence before last i think you meant 'you don't have to use iPhoto to import the videos from the iPhone' as opposed to 'the iPhoto'

About the first question... why would you spend $180 on an AirPort Extreme to do the same task as a cheap, barebones Linksys router (with Tomato installed of course)? The Xbox 360 uses Ethernet obviously, and I'm guessing Mike's file server does to.

How efective is using an AirPort express to extend the range of a Time Capsule or Airport extreme? And I mean, just the express and a power outlet, no ethernet, the range on my 1TB TC isnt very good, and Im curious if using the APE range extender mode will help that much.
As a broader question, is there a better solution than the airport express?

Yes, you can buy a cheap Linksys router. The one I have with Tomato firmware installed has a WDS option. It also has four Ethernet ports on the back. No USB ports, but it works.

transfer iTunes library: the only problem with migration is that you transfer stuff you don't need and end up having the same user on multiple machines (not ideal for sorting through backup disks) . There are iTunes librayry sync apps out there. One I haven't tried is www.sonzea.com/syncopation/

Question regarding MobileMe:
I recently purchased MobileMe to sync all of my information between 15" MBP, iPhone, and the web. Everything is working fine, except on my iPhone I have duplicate copies of everything. How do I fix this?

Hi,
a question for next week: I just got a new MacBook and recognized, the key for 'Mirror Screen' is missing! on my old MB it was F7. I found out that CMD-F1 works also, but is there a way to remap my keyboard or to set up a shortcut (e.g. F5 for CMD-F1)??
thanks,
tim

Try KeyRemap4MacBook ( http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/25141 ). As the name suggests, it lets you remap keys on a MacBook.

thanks, I already tried that one. I think that tool is very powerful, yet it didn't work

What's the best way to transfer my old data on my old MacBook to my new MacBook Pro without erasing new software on the MBP like the new iLife suite?

Hi guys...and gals. I use an early 2009 24" iMac, and a late 2007 13" MacBook running 10.5.7. My question involves a 1TB Time Capsule and VMware Fusion. I was wondering if it were possible to install a Vista virtual machine on a 100GB external hard drive and connect it to the Time Capsule and access this virtual machine wirelessly with either of my Macs.

Question for next time (or anyone who can answer):
I've gotten hooked on listening to podcasts on my iPhone in 2x speed. Is there a way to accomplish this in iTunes as well?

I have a MacBook Pro that I've relegated to a de facto desktop, as I've recently supplemented it with a MacBook Air. However, I wish I could have the systems be able to sync, so that files and settings are kept uniform. I know about ChronoSync (which I've tried, but for the life of me, can't seem to set up properly, even when following instructions and using their ChronoAgent), but that was to sync one folder.
Is there a system-wide solution? Like FoxMarks/X-Marks, but for the non-browser stuff?
If there's not, I suppose a severely dumbed-down ChronoSync tutorial will be a good silver medal.
Thanks in advance!

Question regarding Volume Control Keys
I use F7, F8 and F9 on a regular basis, so have checked "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" in the "Keyboard" preferences.
But now I have to press the "fn" key to access the Volume controls instead of F9, F10 and F11. I would like to map the volume controls onto those keys, and think that I can do this in the "Keyboard Shortcuts" preferences.
Problem is that when I try to add the shortcut it asks me to "Enter the exact name of the menu command you want to add." I can't find the exact menu command for Mute, Volume Up and Volume Down. Any suggestions?
