iPhone 3GS video vs. Flip Mino HD
It was an inevitable face off. The iPhone 3GS and the Flip Mino HD. One of our readers, Adrienne, did just such a test at the Dayton airshow July 18-19, and held the two cameras together to see how they compared. Turns out both do well, with the Mino having higher resolution, of course, and the iPhone getting smoother video with less pixels to push around.
I've had similar results in comparing both cameras. The video from both is a bit shaky, and neither camera hosts an image stabilizer, but iMovie can fix that if you want to take the extra time.
I think the 3GS video is quite good, and for someone who wants to carry one device, it fills the bill. There's no question that the Mino will give you more detail, and it is wrapped up in a seductively small and easy to use package.
Follow this link to an explanation of how the test was run, and the video.
Thanks Adrienne.

I never understood this comparison. The iPhone 3Gs is an iPhone! 3G, GPS, compass, CALLS, surfs the web almost perfectly (*ehm flash ehm*), it has literarily thousands of extra functions with the AppStore. We know how great it is. And it happens to record video too now!
The Flip Mino HD is an HD small, affordable, portable camcorder. THATS IT!
It's like comparing the new 64 Gb flash cards that came out a couple of days ago that hold double the memory than the iPhone.
Of course its going to record better than the iPhone, its a camcorder! the iPhone its a phone.
I know here you're not throwing the iPhone down, bu in some other blogs I've seen people saying that the Flip Mino HD is better than an iPhone, and hate that people don't see this.
The flip mino hd is a horrible camcorder it records just as good as the flip mino, if you cram the same amount of pixels in the super small sensor than it will look like crap. The colors sucks, it terribly not sharp, rolling shutter issues, crappy f 11 lens, no manual control, horrible compression artifacts, horrible resolution, horrible sound and sound compression, no mic input. But its very portable

August 05 2009 at 4:50 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyoh no, not another idiot stating..."but over the two year period, you're paying over x thousands of dollars for an iPhone!" OMFG, I must really feel like shit for paying almost $2,100.00 dollars for my frigg'n Moto Razor! OMG! *shots foot*

*fewer* pixels!
sorry about that.
I'm fairly certain the iPhone 3GS stabilizes the recording at least to some degree. I have a camera that doesn't stabilize at all and it is MUCH worse.
