Rumor: Apple shot ad for unreleased product
Here's a post for everyone awaiting the mythical "iTablet." The Sierra Sun is reporting that Apple recently shot a television ad for an unreleased product at the Truckee, California restaurant Jax on the Tracks. The Sun quotes Jax owner Bud Haley as saying that Apple wanted "...to show [the restaurant] as a hip and cool spot for the 20-something crowd." Additionally, there was a ban on all third-party photography during the shoot (of course). We should note that we're pushing the 3rd week of August, and Apple typically releases new iPods in September. Who buys iPods? Well, 20-something college kids, among others. Share your theories in the comments, but we're going to play it safe and guess that Apple is gearing up for a back-to-school iPod promotion.

Wouldn't a back to school campaign be a little late.

They clear out last year's ipods with the back to school deals and then they release new ones so the hipsters can bug mommy and daddy for x-mas.

Ha. That restauranteur is no dummy:
"Us? Oh, not much happening here. A massive company with a fervent following came here in an effort to capture how cool we are for a valuable demographic. No big deal. Would you like to buy a t-shirt?

actually he might be a dummy. if he agreed to keep his mouth shut that likely includes that Apple was filming there.

dont expect to see a tablet, although i'm not sure why you'd want one anyway.

iPods with cameras. Why would a cool kid bring a tablet to a bar/restaurant?

Apple will wait for the free ipod campaign to end on September 8th. So probably 2-3 weeks after to avoid returns.
Every year apple depletes existing ipod inventory with the free back to school promotion. I think they will wait a short period of time so buyers don't feel taken or try to return. Because apple usually announces on a Tuesday or Wednesday I will go out on a limb and predict the 23rd of September.

Actually, lat year and the past couple of years apple has released the new ipods before the BTS promotion has come to an end. They release them but specifically state that the newly released ipods are not eligible for the BTS promo. So, my guess is the new ipods, should be out by the end of the month.

The shoot is probably for new iPods to be announced and released on September 8th. It's been this way since 2005.
I'm excited since this will probably be Job's first public event since unveiling the new unibody Macs almost a year ago.

This report is somewhat weird: how many Apple ads from the last – let's say five – years do you know that show something different than the barely more than just the product or some people before a featureless background?
Or, let me rephrase that: would you expect an Apple ad to be set in a restaurant?

Fair point.
But they did do that one for the iphone 3GS inside an apple lab or something. maybe they're changing their campaign focus.

So, how come noone is tweeting/blogging/forum commenting about what they saw?

Because I am sure they closed the place for the shoot and everyone there signed a serious NDA and it could be only one or 2 people actually got to be hands on with "the" product. And if they ever want to work again in the industry you learn to respect the NDA's. Heck any product shot that might have happened might have been shot else where in a closed controlled studio.

No brainer: announcement in September for a November release.
It's all been done before... to good results. The major difference this time around will be Steve Jobs making his comeback appearance to launch the new product (I wouldn't count on a tablet per se).

more like 'announcement today, shipped to stores this morning'
it is Apple's fav way to dealing with things. especially if it's just a simple ipod refresh

Sounds like an ad for the rumored "enhanced album format", harking back to the days kids would sit around listening to the music and gawking at the album sleeves and liner notes.

My predictions: new colors for the Nano, camera added to the iPod touch (and maybe to the Nano), larger capacities all around. Classic gets bumped to 200 GB or more (since they USED to be 80 GB and 160 GB before settling in on 120-only) and gets accelerometer/voice recording/etc.

I predict an iPod with camera and HD Video, and wait for it.... 3G through Verizon Wireless. It will the best of the iPhone without the phone, which is the worst part of the iPhone.

But the beauty of the iPod touch is it's not attached to any carrier, you get the iPhone experience with out the $50/month +$99/199/299 up front price tag. If people wanted a carrier-supported apple deal, they'd buy the iPhone, because it does everything the iPod Touch does, but it gets 3G internet access (where available) and can call people, all in one device. People aren't going to want to pay for a cell phone and an iPod touch's monthly plans.

Making a phone for Verizon would make it limited to the US, unless they planned to swap out radios for overseas models... which then wouldn't travel well.
