Apple's Address Book app getting social in 10.6?

We're all still waiting to see if the rumors of an earlier-than-expected release of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard are going to come true. There's been no shortage of news regarding Snow Leopard going to golden master, but 9to5Mac has received a tip that the build everyone has expected to be final (10A432) might actually not be. Some shots of built 10A435 have surfaced and while there's not much information to go by, the new build features an updated Address Book app.

A screenshot from the new build has been floating around featuring an updated version of the Address Book application with one big addition. A "social networking" menu is added showing both Twitter and Facebook icons. This could mean that Apple will allow you to keep (and possibly edit) your contacts pulled from social networks.

There's no word yet if the screenshot is credible or not, but it does look pretty convincing and would make sense given recent news that Apple is likely to incorporate social media into other applications such as iTunes.

oh really

While we're wising on a Star - how about Skype support in Address Book (click to chat or call, better still… How about Mail supports chat clients (at least iChat and Skype) and microbloggers, like Twitter.

And that goes double for iPhone!!

You think that's credible? The anti-aliasing on the type is all wrong - come one!

While groups make sense to some degree it gets cumbersome with 7 siblings, each with spouses and 16 nieces and nephews. It makes little sense to create a new card for each just to track birthdays as the majority are under 10 years old. Once they have their own email address etc it might but it would be so much easier to have a special family card and have options to detach each as they grow up.

this looks fake to me but if it were real it seems like this would result in a lot of duplication of contacts unless it is implemented well.

I think social networks should be a type of contact data that would be added to an existing card. So I see a link to a facebook page, myspace page or a twitter feed.

Additionally you'd want a sync function to get updates from plaxo, fb, linkedin. yes there are apps for this now but still it would be cool if there was a shared or plug-in architecture for this sort of stuff. I am not sure what the benefit would be beyond having more confidence in those solutions. Currently they seem like more trouble than they are worth.

Fake!! Those fugly icons will never be approved. And the font color is too strong. Apple never ever use absolute black.

Another thing that makes me think it is fake is the Twitter integration. Why would you need twitter integration in Address Book? The only information you receive from Twitter is a username. There is no contact information.

Sorry, I pretty much repeated what Sterling said.

Link Twitter accounts to existing Address Book contact info ould be one reason. Just a thought though.

Social integration is about the least interesting thing Apple could add to Address Book or iTunes.

I know I'm going to be hugely disappointed with iTunes 9 because it's criminal that #1 There is still no WiFi syncing for iPhones/iPods, #2 no proper way to manage photos and videos, #3 no shared library support for Genius.

One more thing, wasn't it obvious 10a432 wasn't going to be Golden Master since it doesn't include an installer to upgrade existing 10.5 installations or am I wrong on that? I installed on a fresh partition, but still don't recall seeing any way to upgrade an existing 10.5 install.

The 10A432 upgraded my existing 10.5.8 just fine. The whole thing took less than 35 minutes.

You know, it's $500 for a developer account. Why don't some of these rumor sites (TUAW included) get a damn account. Then you could avoid these kind of stupid posts. Why the hell would you want Twitter in Address Book anyway? What kind of contact information does Twitter store, someone's Twitter user name? That's worth the effort of implementing...

I just cheked with my copy, and the Address Book app in 10A432 doesn't have that feature, or I can't find the preferences for it.
