Apple Store is down, could Snow Leopard be coming?
It looks like the online Apple Store is down right now with that ubiquitous "We'll be back soon" message. Could finally we be seeing the availability of Mac OS X Snow Leopard? We'll let you know when the store is back up and what might be new. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Why is Apple naming their OS after big cats?
Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard.
Can someone tell me this?

'fraid not - but that would be funny if it was...
On returning to Apple and bringing in Next as the new OS (the whole reason for SJ returning) Steve wanted to get back to Apples' roots. He quickly zoomed releases through so that 0S's 8 and 9 were out of the way - and he could release os 10 (sort of like OS 1 (but with a zero)) but he also wanted to move away form the legacy going up in numbers so he introduced the OS X (as being 'fresh' and also why we have stayed at point numbers and never moved onto 11, and 12 etc...)
But he wanted to take this further away the legacy numbers, while going back to year zero: He wanted to reintroduce the idea of the eureka moment and the Newton apple falling from the tree (the original apple logo). Unfortunately Apple already had used the name 'Newton" for very adventurous, before it's time gadget. SJ killed that off as one of his 1st acts at Apple - as he didn't want his favourite Scientist/Mathematician's name and legacy used on his struggling device - others have argued that if the device had been called the LeGrange it would still be on the market today.
So SJ needed a new name or rather 'nickname' that people would refer to this new operating system: so he did the obvious thing. He used Newton's nickname.
Newton was known around Greenwich as 'Cheetah': this was due to several little things:
1) The speed with which he chased and pursued women the caught his eye
2) His big barrel chest, and his thin waist
3) His remarkable talent with the playing cards at the Gentlemens Clubs he visited
However it also followed the tradition amongst those at the Royal College of naming the leading lights in the field of Mathematics after - you've guessed it - Big Cats.
Other Mathematicians names include:
Jean Girud - panther
Johann Bernoulli: Leopard
Leonhard Paul Euler: the Snow Leopard... (he was a prodigy of Bernoulli and also had a fine head of white hair from an early age)
So there you have it
two interesting points:
will we ever see an OS X named after either Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz or Edmond Halley : 2 of Issac Newtons' mortal enemies
(that would be either 'Oselot' or 'Pampas - i'll leave you to see if you could work out which is which)
oh and Physicists also have nicknames for each other that follow a naming convention too...
Einstein was rumoured to be called 'leafroller'...
Maybe when OS 11 is released... as Jobs has used Einstein before at apple and the genius moniker...
My order didn't say "delivers" by the 28th, it said "ships" by the 28th.

If you are VAT registered in the UK you pay £21.74 excluding VAT. I don't think I'll wait until I am next in the US to buy Snow Leopard just to save myself £2.60.
August 24 2009 at 9:07 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyJust preordered my copy of Snow Leopard from UK store. It was £25 which, although still cheap is more than it costs in the US. £25 = $41 today. But then Apple always charges UK customers alot more than US customers. Can't wait to get this thing on 28th Aug according to the shipping date Apple provided.
