Snow Leopard set for release on August 28th
Amid the leaks and speculation, the online Apple Store went down this morning, only to return with Snow Leopard release information -- August 28th. It also turns out that the box photo that was leaked last weekend was legit, showing the Snow Leopard on the front. The pricing remains at $29US for a single user upgrade, or $49 for a Family Pack upgrade. You can only install the upgrade edition if you're using Leopard. If you're not, you'll need to buy the Mac Box Set, available for $169 for a single user or $229 for a Family Pack.
Before you install, check out our upgrade guide. Also, note that If you purchased a qualifying Mac on or after June 8, 2009, that does not include Mac OS X Snow Leopard, you can upgrade for $9.95.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

I was under the impression it would ship Aug 28th - then arrive in 5-8 business days.

My order still says shipping in September (apple store).

wish they had a box set for leopard upgraders.

They do, it's just not as much of a deal.
Box Set = $169
Snow Leopard Upgrade + iLife + iWork = $29 + $79 + $79 = $187.

You can buy it anyway, as I doubt the OS X Installer is any different.

Does this mean we cannot do an "erase and install" with the upgrade price?

I think it has been confirmed that you can do an erase and install. The disc just checks that you are running Leopard or Snow Leopard before installing. Just ordered mine!

No, erase and install will still work if you were running Leopard. The installer will be able to tell by your machine's model number/serial number.
If you're one of the Intel-Based Tiger users, you need to buy the Box Set. Sucks, because it's a big price tag to swallow. However, you have to consider that if you're still using Tiger, you skipped the upgrade fee for Leopard (Wasn't it $79?), and you didn't get to have iLife 09 or iWork 09, because they were Leopard-only. So, while you're forced to buy them now, you didn't have to buy them before, and they give you a little price break.

An early release! (It was slated for Sept.) Nice job Apple.

well... considering that it won't be really usable until 10.6.1. comes out, maybe they'll deliver the real OS by the end of september...

I ordered Snow Leopard via the up-to-date program on the 21st. My order still says that it is shipping in September. Is it possible that up-to-date customers may have to wait until September instead of the 28th like everyone else?

You certainly called this one sir! Nice job.

I sure do hope this thing identifies your computer as one that came out after Leopard was released so that you can just do a fresh install from the Snow Leopard disc instead of an install-and-immediate-upgrade. That would suck.
Needless to say, I ordered my Up-To-Date back in July and I'm looking forward to playing with it on Friday.

Does anyone else think there are soft updates for the MacBook /MacBook Pro hardware? Their "select" status in the order section of their respective pages are mysteriously missing.
