Apple posts three new updates

After the big upgrade to Snow Leopard last weekend, Apple has posted three new updates, fixing various OS and firmware issues.

The first is Mac mini EFI Firmware Update 1.2. This update "improves compatibility with the latest Apple memory kits on Mac mini computers." This update is only needed for Mac minis introduced in March 2009 or later.

Next, there's an update to Mac OS X Leopard Server, Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 Update v.1.1, which includes general operating system fixes, as well as specific fixes for a few other issues. This update is available as a Combo or Standalone update.

Finally, there's a firmware update for SuperDrives. This update "will eliminate the noise made by the optical disk drive during system startup and wake from sleep on your Mac." This update is only needed for iMacs and Mac minis introduced in March 2009 or later.

As always, these updates are available through Software Update on your Mac, or you can download them from Apple's Support Downloads page.

Damnit. Why isn't the SuperDrive update available for MacBooks? We've got the same problem. =

.... and then Apple user came to Steve Jobs with request
"why U didn't made EFI64 for MacBooks with C2D starting from 2006, while all have 64bit processors?"

And then Apple God spoken:
"Hey users, You can SUCK MY BALLS" and then "screw You guys. im going home" :P

Isn't this kinda sad?

Woopdee freeking do. 13" / 15" and 17" MacBook Pro users have multiple thousand reply long threads on Apple support forums about the EFI 1.7 firmware causing their entire machines to beach ball for 30 seconds at a time for mulitple times in an hour. And we get a freeking iMac and MacMini updates that fixes a "noise".

Oh dear god no... NOT A NOISE! QUICK FIX IT!

"Whats that you say? Your work is being interrupted multiple times an hour by hangs to the OS that last around 30 seconds each time? Hmmm... Nope never heard of that problem. NEXT!"

@pheh Because everyone at Apple works on the same fixes at the same time, and fixes already developed and tested for other product issues should be held back while we work on your problem (which may not even be EFI firmware related). Sure.

my 2007 macBook is now slower than ever, PowerPoints wont open, some Word docs now don't open, QuickTime is increddibly slow & jerky, and VPN now no longer works; making my laptop useless for taking to Uni lectures!
Not impressed!
(yes thanks, "do a clean install" MIGHT be an answer. But shouldn't have to. -and I don't have the time to spend ages re-installing all the bits of software & files I have backed up). Urgh

I ran SU and picked up the Mac mini EFI Firmware Update 1.2 without much hassle. Even after a reboot, SU didn't find the SuperDrive Firmware Update 3.0; I had to manually download and run it. Again, no problems.

My mini's superdrive is about as noisy as ever when booting up (two quick seeks, takes about half a second is all). But the superdrive is now absolutely dead silent waking from sleep. I can hear the hard drive spin up, but not the superdrive.

This isn't just great for the new Wake-on-Wireless stuff, it's also a boon for HTMacs. W00t!

Good on 'ya, Apple! :-)

@Aaron P. You might want to price that out first: 2x4GB 204-Pin DDR3 1066 SO-DIMMs (PC3 8500) are going for about seven benjamins at NewEgg. More than the cost of the mini. And you'd need an application specifically designed to use more than 4GB. ;-)

FYI, if the Santa Rosa MacBooks were any indication the memory limitation will be due to motherboard design and the chipset being used; an EFI firmware update won't fix that.

I have a 2007 Black Macbook and the SuperDrive makes that noise, and has since Leopard.
