Apple appears to be aiming right at the Flip market with its release of the updated iPod nano today. A quick rundown includes:...

I've been reading comments on several blogs, and am quite astonished by the reaction to the new Nano, as well as to the faster, larger memory options for the iPod Touch.
The Nano's a winner. I see a lot of people saying, "Who cares about the video option?" You know who does? Teens. And teens are one of the largest consumers of the nano. This fits that demographic like a glove. Then FM radio and pedometer? Adults...particularly those that are working on their health (or keeping it going). All the clubs with cardio equipment offer TVs with FM radio. Now you can work out and listen to the TV on an iPod. Very smart. And the pedometer gives you reason to carry the device with you.
I'm a big fan of the Touch. I was a little sad to see no camera (still or video) as well as no microphone. But they don't want to create a device that is an exact iPhone without the phone...they want the iPhone to be the Cadillac of the the iPod line. For a lot of people, faster processors (gaming) and more memory will be the selling point (as it was for my own upgrade from a 3G to a 3GS).
My only wish at the moment is for a pedometer that runs in the background (don't want to jailbreak) on the 3G (wife's) or the 3GS (mine). I don't think I'd use an FM tuner on the iPhone, as I can link to most streams anyway...except of course, TV stations at the club...but I have a 2G Shuffle (and Arriva headphone) for working out.
So I make 3 predictions for the iPhone 4G and 4.0 O.S. 1) Expect a pedometer that runs in the background. 2) Expect 64GB as an option. 3) There will be a better camera/video recorder as well. I hope they keep the same body...I like being able to use the same cases without buying all new accessories.
I want that Nano! I listen to radio (WAXQ) most of the day, and generally switch over to stored tunes when I'm in the subway. I just hope it doesn't drain the battery like the add-on FM tuner I've been using on my iPod Classic.

September 09 2009 at 7:36 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI wanna know file size comparison. Like how much would I be able to record on this? It'd be a nice slip video to shoot at different events I go to at college... but I mean 8hrs? Think that's possible?
September 09 2009 at 6:40 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHmmm... no mention of whether the radio supports RDS ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Data_System)
I would kind of expect it to, most radios in Europe in the last 10 years do (other than really cheap ones such as shower radios).
For the uninitiated: It allows the radio station to transmit it's name, the current time, program type, text (such as current program/song name), and alternative frequencies for the same station (for when you move out of the range of one transmitter and in to the range of another - so the radio can automatically switch - especially useful in cars or on the train), also (optionally!) does automatic switching to stations which are about to do a traffic news report.
All radio stations in Europe transmit at least some of this information. The Apple iPod Radio Remote supports RDS... but there's no mention of it on the iPod nano.
Anyone know if it's supported? Anyone know how widespread RDS is outside of Europe? (Sorry for my ignorance!)
Matt
the nano does itunes tagging i would assume it would need RDS to know what song it is
September 09 2009 at 8:38 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIn the US, it's not as ubiquitous - some radios do, but my radio in my 2007 Hyundai Elantra does not.
September 09 2009 at 9:36 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replywould be great if it had a simple microSD or M2 slot and everyone would put whatever memory they fancied.
September 09 2009 at 4:58 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMaybe they left still photos out because the resolution is just too low for a good result?
Most chips that can do video seem to be able to do stills too (at a higher resolution), judging from various video/photo-capable cell phones I've owned.
I don't. Never heard of it. I guess I'll have to break out Google...
September 09 2009 at 3:29 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAm most interested in the video quality: how does it compare to a Flip? Thanks!
September 09 2009 at 3:13 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyCompared to the following:
Nano - 640x480 (vga resolution)
Flip (regular) - 640x480 (vga resolution)
Flip HD (720p)/Kodak Zi6 (720p) - 1280x720
Kodak Zi8 (1080p) - 1920x1080
So, by comparison, it's meh. I wish they would add an HD recorder to the touch instead. That would make me upgrade to a new one of those for sure.
The previous capacity was 8GB and 16GB. Right? This isn't a larger capacity.
September 09 2009 at 3:02 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThat's correct, there's no capacity bump on the Nano. Big mistake, TUAW!
September 09 2009 at 3:44 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThey fixed the "higher capacity" statement, thanks TUAW!
