Apple introduces new iPod shuffle colors, adds a new $59 2GB model
Along with the new iPod nano, iPod touch and iPod classic updates, Apple today also introduced 3 new colors of the iPod shuffle, a special stainless steel edition, and a 2GB model for $59.
The new colors are green, pink and blue, and are available for both the 2GB and 4GB models.
Also, there's a new $99 4GB stainless steel model, available for $99, $20 more than the regular 4GB colors.
Finally, there's a new 2GB model of the 3rd generation shuffle, available for $59, and also comes in black, sliver, green, pink and blue.

From what I can tell, one can no longer by the generation with buttons on the Apple Store.

I agree. Plus, it gives credence to Apple-bashers' arguments that Apple has actually put out a device without controls — WITHOUT CONTROLS — just for the sake of looks. It would signal trouble for any company to make such an utterly brain-dead move, but Apple? It makes me a little worried for their future that they would not just greenlight, but boastfully market such an abomination.

Heh, well, Apple have had plenty of experience with utterly brain-dead ideas like a music player that has no radio, and like trying to compete in the music retail business, and like trying to compete in the smartphone market, and like making a smartphone without a physical keyboard, and like not licensing their OS, and quite a few other things that everyone thought at the time were utterly brain-dead ideas.
Apple has always succeeded because they found out what real consumers actually wanted, rather than listening to a few vocal tech-heads who have no idea how consumers think and who think that comparing spec sheets is how you can tell a superior device from other devices.

I love the new shuffle. If they could fix the problem with sweat getting into the headphone controls and messing with the volume, i'd love it even more.

That happened to me with my original iPod shuffle 1G. Wore it around my neck on the lanyard under my shirt while mowing the lawn once and it died because of sweat. You'd think these small ones specifically would be more durable to the rigors of exercise.

The device I would like to be able to still buy is the 2nd Generation Shuffle, with the click-wheel (square-ish form factor). I know that, until last month, you could still find it on the Apple store, along with the new 3rd generation shuffle (tall, skinny, no on-device control buttons, voice-over). Anyone know if now ebay is the only source for 2nd gen shuffles?
P.S., your article's last paragraph -"Finally, there's a new 2GB model of the 3rd generation shuffle, available for $59"- is bizarre (to me). Either you are restating the info from first & second paragraph, or you are invoking hyperbole, as in "Finally! it's about time...". (at first I thought you were talking about the continuation of the 2nd gen click-wheel model... )
