Count The Beats: A Welcome Note...

Welcome to a brand new series focusing on music creation on the Mac and iPhone platform.

As you know, here at TUAW, we are crazy about anything Apple. We just love it! But, dear reader, this is not the be all and end all of our hearts. For many, if not all of us, music is a great passion of ours too. So, when these two worlds collide, naturally, it's a beautiful thing.

Recently, you may have seen a few posts on TUAW covering iPhone apps such as FourTrack and Noise.io or Soundboard for the Mac. Well, in this series, we are going to be singing a similar tune but taking a bit more of an in-depth look, or, if you will, taking things a semi-tone down (OK, enough with the music word play).

What exactly can you expect from this (fortnightly) series? If you're a home studio enthusiast (or a singer-songwriter trying to make ends meet) there will be tips, tricks and how-tos from Garageband all the way to Logic Studio and everything in between. Reviews on some of the latest and greatest music creation software and hardware for the Mac and iPhone/iPod Touch as well as, every now and then, a bit of inspiration for those rainy days.

But don't fret (oops!) if you can't hold a tune. For those less musically inclined we know you still need a soundtrack for the holiday you had with Granny last year and she wants to share the photo's on a DVD with some 'hip and happening' music in the background - we've got your back.

Stay tuned and leave a comment if you have any bright ideas for what you'd like to see covered in this new series.

This is a series I'll be following very closely as I'm a composer and pianist about to get my first Mac :)

On Windows I currently use; Sibelius 6, Cakewalk SONAR, and WaveLab so I'll be looking forward to hearing about mac alternatives such as logic studio.

Would be cool to have some info about what the key differences between protools, garage band, logic and other recording platforms are. ie: a sort of break down of strength and weaknesses and why one would choose logic over protools or visa versa.

There are a lot people who use Logic Express-so cover that and Logic Studio, if possible.

Would like to see articles about noise.io, Beatmaker and iDrum.

Properlerhead creators of "Reason" have a new offering in beta called "Record" looks pretty useful so far.

http://www.petruccimusiclibrary.org is a great site for [Sheet] Music Scores (almost entirely Classical though) 36,000 PDFs and counting, not particularly mac-orientated, though there has been some extremely minor talk of an iPhone app.

And yes, somewhat shameless self promotion as I am an Admin there.

It's great to see this coming to TUAW. I'm a Professional* Composer in Australia and this is very interesting. Will this mostly be about the more popular routes of music on a mac (Logic, Garage Band etc.), or some of the more classic and less standard Finale 2010/Sibelius 6?

I'd recommend looking at Rectools08pro, by far the best multitrack recorder on the iPhone to date.

And my favorite iPhone metronome is Dr. Betotte:

I also second the recommendation to review BeatMaker as well.

Good luck with the series!

Welcome! TUAW needed a musical mac blogger.

I'd really like to see an article describing any ways to get the least latency out of a system with CoreAudio (as I've seen a few tiny tweaks but nothing advanced).

Also, how about a soundflower routing tutorial :)

Might be a little bit too heavy for the post but mail me a bit more detail about your problem and I'll see what I can find.

As a podcaster, I would love to see general tips and tricks for both voice and music editing using GarageBand. While I think it is definitely a great program (especially for the price), I think it is Apple's least intuitive program in the iLife package.
