New iMacs and MacBooks coming soon?
Maybe so, if you believe the predictions of some analysts at Wedge Partners. They proclaim in their neverending analyst-y wisdom that in the next few weeks, Apple will again refresh its lines of iMacs and MacBooks, including a slimmer iMac and an only slightly updated MacBook. Why would Apple announce such a thing, especially so soon after the recent June revamp? Windows 7 is apparently the answer -- Apple wants to distract from Microsoft's big release, according to the analystsPersonally, it all sounds kind of hokey to us -- Apple's already got their back-to-school lineup all set, and while there probably is room for one more update before the holiday season, it's hard to believe they're going to announce some extremely minor updates in a desperate grab against Windows 7.
And not even the analysts will guess at a netbook or tablet release -- they say neither one of those is coming up for an announcement any time soon. You have to think that if Apple is doing one more update before the holidays, it really will come up in the next few weeks, so by the time Halloween candy starts dropping in pillowcases, we should know for sure.

There will be an internally redesigned iMac that supports the "desktop Nehalem" Lynnfield socket 1156 Intel i5/i7 CPU and finally there will be a quad core iMac. It's about time! They didn't implement GCD just for fun, now they need some more cores to run it on apart from the Mac Pro.

September 18 2009 at 5:50 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI really like the current iMac design and it does not need to be any slimmer. The CPU needs more than 2 cores. My money is ready.
September 17 2009 at 9:57 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'm holding out for the next generation of iMacs in the hope that they will be i7 based and offer a better GPU. What I would really love to see would be some kind of box that sits inbetween the iMac and the MacPro in the product line.. a powerful macMini if you will. I'm currently running a hackintosh that cost significantly less than an iMac and gives me superior performance in just about every way. I love the apple hardware, but with there was something more equivalent to a "gaming pc".
September 17 2009 at 8:12 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWindows 7 - who cares, not even pc users - only the idiotic few, the rest still reeling from vista. And the "excitement" will be fleeting - When apple does anything it knows that the community keep the buzz going on and on and share the good news unlike windows world. As mentioned earlier apple won't retaliate - certainly not with updated iMac or MacBook. They would use something even more leftfield if they wanted to distract the media/public - that's were the new improved mac mini ( see comment above) comes in - this really would be apples Trojan horse - sneaking into the hearts and homes of the masses through their lounge and tv's. Yes apple have canned the 40gb appletv and are selling through the 160gb before unleashing the new mac mini combined with apple tv - software plus hdmi and/ or displayport- I predicted this a year ago it will happen - watch this space/tv screen!
September 17 2009 at 7:38 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHow 'bout a new mac mini? Upto 60 days before refresh based on the last refresh period of 260 days (see macrumors timelne). This time with apple tv pre-installed as should have been last time mini was updated (march 2009) and hdmi as well as displayport. Talking of which why don't they just sell the software like they do iLife - which makes me think they actually will, post Xmas. Blu-ray unlikly to be an option. Forget talk of iMac refresh - possibly cosmetic change to current black plastic back, to aluminium as per led displays.
September 17 2009 at 7:14 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOops. Windows 7 isn't out yet? No wonder that tech support guy was all confused when i called with a problem. haha
I need windows for work, otherwise I really don't pay much attention. Clearly - I didn't even know it wasn't on sale yet.
I'm waiting for them to put the LED display into the iMac like they did into the MBP's!
September 17 2009 at 3:44 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThis is crazy, Apple will update when the chips it intends to use are available. For the iMac that can't come soon enough as it is a poor value in it's current config.
As to the MBP the reasoning is similar for the 17". The others would simply be tweaked for the holidays.
Now ask yourself what chips are available to make this happen.
That analyst may have the right idea but it is for all the wrong reasons. Windows 7 isn't that significant yet to Apple.
