First Look: Best Camera App for iPhone

The first thing I normally do when someone names their application "The Best..." is roll my eyes and delete the PR email. However, when I saw a press release about the Best Camera app for iPhone, I decided to take a look and I'm glad I did.

Best Camera [iTunes link] is a collaboration between professional photographer Chase Jarvis and iPhone dev firm Übermind. The app gets its name from Jarvis's book "The Best Camera is The One That's With You," a collection of photos taken all over the world by Jarvis with his iPhone.

The US$2.99 app features 14 useful filters and effects that can be stacked; in other words, you can take a photo with the iPhone camera, then apply several filters and/or effects before sharing your handiwork. The filters and effects are on a side-scrolling "dock" at the bottom of the screen, and you apply them by simply tapping on the icons. Sharing includes saving the photo on your iPhone camera roll, sending it out via email, or blasting it to your Facebook or Twitter account.

There's also one more place to share your photo. While filters and effects are nothing new, Jarvis has created a community at thebestcamera.com where photos that have been submitted are displayed on a constantly changing photo wall. These photos are also viewable in the app itself, and by tapping a photo in either location, you can view information about the photographer. On the website, the information also includes a list of the filers or effects that were used on the original photo so you can re-create photos that you find fascinating.

Check out the gallery below for some screenshots of the Best Camera app in action.

Thanks for the review and feedback on Best Camera. I’m Scott from Chase Jarvis. I’m happy to report that a new version of Best Camera is now available in which we have corrected the bug in Best Camera that allowed Facebook captions to be changed to “Photo from Chase Jarvis’ Best Camera”. It was a bug in the form of dummy text that was plugged in during testing and never intended to be in the production version of the app. The version of Best Camera (1.01) that is currently available in the iTunes store repairs this oversight, and has been tuned-up to facilitate faster uploading and sharing of photos. As always, we embrace feedback from everyone, so feel very free to send any ideas of further enhancements to the support page on http://www.thebestcamera.com

Ugh, I feel like I threw out $3 on this app. PhotoGene is far better. "Best Camera" doesn't even have sliders or let you adjust strengths of the filters.

This app is way, way too simplistic.

Props to the author for coming on and letting us know that the ad blurb is a bug and that they'll be fixing it ASAP!

Once that's fixed I'll be buying the app -- the convenience of being able to tweak a photo and then upload it to Facebook with one click is worth the price.

SOOOOOOOOOO many people are missing the point of this app. It's quick and simple. If I wanted to heavily edit a photo, I'd use my Mac for that. This app is perfect for me for on-the-go shooting, editing and sharing. Yes it's called "Best Camera". But it's not trying to be "the best camera" app out there. It's from the phrase "The best camera is the one that's with you". Case in point, since most of you are viewing TUAW, the iPhone. It's with you all the time. Take a pic. Edit it. Upload it. Done....

I'm really quite dissapointed by this "first look"
It's a PR plug disguised as a psedo review. There is zero reviewer opinion.
Just a rehashing of what the app does.
boo TUAW.
the app itself may be very good, but this review does nothing to help me decide if its worth my 3 bucks

It Is actually a great app.. I love the community idea surrounding it.. I love the upload functionality... Yeh I use other apps to edit photos on the fly.. but I can always pull them into this app and edit them some more and then upload.. The concept behind it.. is no matter what camera you use.. any camera is the best camera when taking a photo.. its about the time and the place.. the memory of it all...

How long will it take for thebestcamera app to make its way to the mac desktop as a native app. Simple effects! Simple interface would be sweet!

This is NOT a camera app, it's a photo retouching app. A true camera app would help you while TAKING pics, not after the fact. A camera app would do things like white balance, anti-shake, maybe give you exposure control (which has yet to be done, by the way).

It would be really helpful if the community would stop branding photo manipulation apps as "camera" apps because they are two totally different things.

Another shameless advertisement from TUAW. I need to find another apple blog soon, it seems.

The first thing I normally do when TUAW recommends an application is roll my eyes and ignore the PR post and be sure to never buy that crap.

You guys should at least try to be less obvious....
