Still doubt Apple's desire for portable gaming clout? Here's proof...
This afternoon, we received a tip from one of our readers about an awesome ad on the IGN.com website. We chased the bait and decided to check it out. We're really glad we did. What we found was the ad above. We preserved it via screencast so all of our readers could enjoy it. The video above shows exactly what you will find on IGN just in case the current ad stops running soon. It reminds us of a similar ad on Yahoo a while back.
I have been pretty skeptical about Apple's desire to take over the portable gaming market, but I can't doubt it any more. This ad is running on one of the most popular gaming sites... obviously targeting those who wouldn't really think about the iPod touch as a gaming platform. The use of the website's design is definitely something that will catch the eye of the reader... so clever, in fact, that it's nearly impossible to press the stop button. You can press it, but why would you?
Thanks to Swaghi for the tip.

Gaming on the iPhone blew up with the SDK. I really wish that an SDK for OSX development would come out at some point. I don't care for gaming on a computer but it would definitely be something wonderful to see.

Just FYI: the iPhone SDK is just a bolt-on part of the larger set of Mac developer tools.

SDK for OSX???
You mean like Xcode, which comes on the OSX install disk? AMIRITE?

Apple's Mac Developer Program
http://developer.apple.com/
and every copy of Mac OS X comes with the Developer Tools installer that make it possible to develop on the platform.

They do have gaming made easy on the Mac. It's called GameSalad, go check it out!

Just the kind of distracting ad I would love to see on a page that I am trying to read the content of!

Love the ad. Way to take over the masthead for awhile. I had to refresh several times to get it to animate, clicking the ad just forwards to Apple.

That's a very clever ad. But, the kind of thing that makes me want to punch the creator in the nads when I'm trying to read a page. Someone should burn...

On the other hand, I'm not going to have to worry about that because they force a redirect on me to uk.ign.com, which isn't running the ad. >.

It doesn't play until you click it.
Hawkman said 8:10PM on 9-28-2009
That's not so bad then. I, of course, wouldn't know. :-(

And there is a nice demonstration of what people hate about online advertising.

It doesn't play until clicked. I'd prefer ads to be silent and unmoving until I show some interest.
I'd say this is what an ad *should* be. Non-distracting if I don't care about it (although perhaps a bit overlarge), and actually entertaining if I am interested.
