Yellow sticky in the sky, are those new iMacs that I spy? Apple Store down 8:30p ET

It's Monday night in America, and that means one thing: football. OK, two things -- time for an Apple Store update, and football. The store is down as of 8:30 pm ET (thanks for the tip, Will T.), and with the ongoing rumors of hardware refreshes, combined with a steady stream of tidbits about reduced iMac inventory around the country... well, you might just wake up to a pleasant surprise.

Let us know what you see when it comes back up, mmkay? Update 9:15pm: Apparently, nothing much. It's back with no visible changes, everyone exhale. Update II, 1:20 am: And now it's down again. What on earth are they smoking over there?

P.S. If you haven't noticed the Deals of the Day ticker on our front page (powered by our friends at Dealmac.com), take a peek -- maybe you can get a bargain on a previous-generation Mac.

I expect the new products will not be a silent release.
At the end of the last keynote Steve Jobs said something like:
"that is what we have in store for you today, see you soon"

Why would he say "see you soon" if they don't schedule another press event soon?

Anyone know why Apple actually takes their site down for hours at a time, rather than maintaining a development server in the background and then just flipping a switch when the new site is ready?

Odd thing happened to me today. I got my 1st gen iPhone back from AppleCare (actually, a brand new one!) yet iTunes keeps giving me the message "iPhone activations are not available at this time".

I've never seen that message before.

Also, my 3GS syncs just fine.

I dunno....

I'm new to the Mac universe. Is the store closing really a big deal?

often yes. not 100% of the time. but when they are announcing something new they will definitely take the store down while they reload the pages.

So when, like now, there are rumors floating around about a potential release, the store going down will make heart go all aflutter.

Following Jordan's comment, do you guys really think the Apple Fairy's market decisions are influenced by casually perusing the TUAW comments to see what the faithful are hoping for?

I'm sorry to inform you of this, but there are no Apple blog fairies. But Unicorns? There may be Unicorns...

Football really TUAW. I thought you guys were better than mentioning a sport that involves grown men slapping each other on the rear
