Dead Time Capsules can hang out together

We reported on the abundance of Time Capsule failure-to-boot after 18 months in September. A new site has emerged from the mist to help Time Capsule owners who are struggling to get Apple to acknowledge the issue. TimeCapsuleDead.org exists as a register for the owners of dead Time Capsules and has links to self-help discussions as well as the Apple Feedback page. Of the devices that have been registered thus far, the average time until ports-up is 17 months and 29 days -- eerily close to the estimated 18 month mark.

We'd like to give you a friendly reminder that our own Lauren explored the AppleCare agreements, and found that any computer-centric AppleCare agreement that's in force should cover this Time Capsule failure (as it's considered a peripheral used with the Mac). That does not mean that our readers who don't have a current agreement should be left begging on the streets by Apple. This is something that needs to be addressed. Hopefully this new site will be a good resource for all of our readers.

Thanks, Pim and KB!

What I think is missing in the discussion of the tastefulness of the image is this: Cemeterys don't look like that picture. The Arlington Cemetery memorial is the only one I can think of that looks like that. So the reference is clear, and generally people do not value enough the sacrifice of soldiers or understand the relationship between freedom and sacrifice. It makes sense that someone could think it was distasteful.

But I don't believe it was meant to cheapen the sacrifice of soldiers, so perhaps the image could mean "the Time Capsules are soldiers dying the line of duty"

Mine died today. Age? Almost exactly 18 months.

My TC died this morning. Just shy of 18 months old. Fortunately I bought Apple Care 2 weeks ago for my iMac so it is covered and Apple is sending me a new one this week. Still doesn't sit well knowing some items will only last 18 months after the purchase date.

Dear Americans. We fought for your rights to free speech. Now please shut up. Thank you. The military.

What strikes me about this story is that Apple originally sold the Time Capsule as having a "server quality" hard drive".

Of course when they were sold, people opened them up and found a fairly generic hard drive inside.

Actually the Apple marketing materials(*) still list it as a "1TB or 2TB Serial ATA server-grade hard disk drive".

That said, it sounds like the unit itself is dying, not necessarily the hard drive.

Yes I am an American and yes I understand sacrifices were made. Unlike you I do not disgrace those people that sacrificed their lives by stifling people's free speech so adamantly.

Once again, go mourn over your friends or something and stop disgracing them by stifling creativity and free speech and every opportunity you find.

I don't really care if people dance on my grave, spit on it, laugh at it, or even dig it up. WANT TO KNOW WHY?

I'll be D-E-A-D.

I think they should do one of a flag draped casket where the casket is made out of Apple Time Capsules. That would be clever and hilarious. And maybe replace any soldiers saluting with Steve Jobs' head.

Do you people who find this image offensive understand that nothing is inherently offensive? What I mean is that you are taking offense to it. It is not a universal opinion. Are you really that important that everyone should cater to your wants and needs?

Sorry to get analytical about this but nobody seems to have pointed out that there is a huge skew in the metric that the site is reporting. The average life span for a time capsule is not 17 months because I would imagine most are still working!

This information can't be gained because we don't know the actual number of time capsules that have failed or even the total produced. Finally I would imagine most the people that have posted on that site are angry tech savvy people that most likely would not complain/post if their product broke after 3 years. They are posting simply to try and bring down the average life span.

Anyway, I would like to point out I am not a Fan boy standing up for Apple, I personally believe that all products should carry a 3 year warranty or at least have a 3 year warranty for "known problems" like the xbox 360 and its red ring of death, its just that I work in analytics and I thought that the site was badly misrepresenting the data.

I don't own a Time Capsule but I do own an Apple Airport Extreme router and the external PSU certainly gets very very hot.

Does the TC use the same external PSU as the Airport router?

No, the Time Capsule has an internal power supply, which is what causes the internal temperature to sky rocket and burn out the capacitors of the power supply.
