Yummy FTP (finally) sees an update
Yummy FTP has been my favorite FTP client for quite a while. I had become so used to seeing it every day that I hadn't even realized it hadn't been updated since 2007 May, 2008. That makes today a big day, as version 1.8 is out with a deluge of new features. While it still lacks the S3 support that Transmit and Interarchy have, it's solid, fast and offers all of the advanced configuration I need with a very reasonable price tag.
Highlights from the 30+ new features include an Open In Terminal command (which can set up an SSH session, log you in and cd to the selected directory for remote folders), improved Quick Look features for local and remote previews, advanced file diffs and a greatly improved remote delete/duplicate scheme. As fast as Yummy FTP has always been for me, the idea of downloading and re-uploading a folder just to make a copy borders on insanity. I can't believe I've been doing that since 2007.
Quick tip for Yummy users: the bookmark folder in ~/Library/Preferences/Yummy FTP/Bookmarks looks (and works) great in the Dock, displayed in Folder view, especially if you organize your bookmarks hierarchically.
Yummy FTP handles FTP, FTP SSL/TLS and SFTP, and offers filtering, remote editing (with TextMate project support), auto-recovery, folder sync and more. It's available for a 30-day trial from Yummy Software, and you'll note on their site that there's a limited-time coupon ('ONLY15YUM') for a $15US license (normally $28US). That's a pretty good deal for some powerful FTP software.

I have found that Yummy is MUCH faster than Cyberduck when transfering many small files. E.g. code. I do not have any experience with Transmit.

Regarding the Yummy FTP update.... those of us who are using a free copy from the Mac App A Day program should be informed that once you update, you may purchase the upgrade for $10 or use it as a trial for 30 days. They say you may also revert to the previous, free version but I didn't see an easy way to do this.
$10 isn't too much to ask for good software, but this should be made clear before the upgrade begins.
My text messages are gone. Voice Memos was placed on first screen, bumping one app onto a second screen all by itself.
Love the landscape keyboard in Mail and COPY & PASTE! Keeezoowa!
I'll stick with FileZilla any day, open source and updated frequently.

Completely worth the money.
What on earth is wrong with Cyberduck? I consider myself a power user and it meets my needs perfectly. It's well worth donating to.

October 14 2009 at 9:47 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHow many bookmarks do you guys have?
How long would it take to transfer them manually?
I remember emailing them about a year ago, just a few days after buying transmit, but never received an answer... They can basically ignore their customers since the bookmarks and not usable by any other piece of software.
October 14 2009 at 6:52 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe last version of Transmit is really getting old but the fact that we can't import their bookmarks into other apps make the switch to another application rather difficult...
October 14 2009 at 3:32 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt's unfortunate that Panic encrypted their bookmarks/favorites with a proprietary method since version 3 (version 2 bookmarks will import into Yummy just fine, btw). I did mail them asking for a way to decrypt v3 info, but I never received a reply. It's a good way to keep their customers from jumping ship I guess. Perhaps if more of their actual customers asked for a plain text export (or something) they might be willing. Who knows... worth a try?
October 14 2009 at 6:01 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Reply... and I forgot to mention that regarding your tip, the entire Bookmark hierarchy is already displayed off the Dock menu from Yummy FTP itself. No need to add the Bookmark folder yourself :)
October 14 2009 at 2:00 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI actually like to use it as a launcher for Yummy FTP, so it still serves a purpose. I just pop down and click the bookmark I need and jump straight to it, without launching first. Works for me :).
