I have the Macbook pro 13 mid 2009
I used to get the spinning wheel that last for 3 to 5 sec
suddenly I got this update on my “software update”
but after the update, the freeze last for 30 to 40 sec!
the whole system freeze with only mouse pointer moves and the spinning wheel!
OK, the update delayed the freeze so its every 4 to 5h not like before every hour or less.. but now its creazy! almost a minute!
why don’t apple call the owners of those machines and replace the defect! even if the ask me to pay up to a 100$ I wont mind!

if I hadnt spent so much on it I would have smashed it into a million pieces...

2 months of AppleCare support discussions and Apple Store visits and no kind of progress...I'm only had the damn thing for just over 3 months...lol

so here's to hoping it works

I only experienced (that I know of) freeze when accessing yahoo web mail via safari, since i switched to firefox, it didnt happen again, should I try the update? Now I only experience much more frequent (random) disk access.

I was getting a black screen sometimes with a spinning ball (sometimes nothing) on my '09 24 in. imac. I installed the Performance update 1.0 and about 10 minutes later it happened again. :(

I was experiencing the freezing, which happened after a system update on my macbook pro 13. I went to the Mac store and asked for help, they were clueless, per usual, as if it was isolated to me. I had Snow Leopard come in the mail and upgraded. It actually seemed to help with the random long beachball freezes, so I figured something in the leopard update that I suspected was causing the performance issue was overwritten.

Over time performance begin to slow or so it seemed. So I started looking at upgrading. Yesterday I put in a 7200 RPM, cloning the 5400 using SuperDuper. Performance is noticeably better. It's an older Hitachi Travelstar from about 2 years ago that I had been using as file storage with occasional use since purchasing.

Almost immediately after being up and running on the 7200, I noticed the performance update 1.0 so I went for it. It seems like it disabled SMS altogether. My drive spins constantly and wont sleep while the system is running. I've adjusted SMS and disksleep settings in power management pmset from the command terminal. No change. Since the switch/update battery life has drastically been reduced.

My fatal mistake was downloading this performance update, not knowing what it was as soon as it came out, which coincided with me swapping out the 5400 for the 7200 HDD.

So my question- did the performance update disable SMS completely- or is it something about the drive. Drive or update?

I understand better performance = faster battery consumption. At least happy to report no freezing and much better system performance overall!

I've confirmed that the "Performance Update 1.0" does indeed update the EFI, and regresses the Superdrive Update 3.0.

After this mis-named update, the optical drive will be checked each time you re-boot, causing the "graunching" noise that was corrected by the previous Superdrive update.

I'll be looking forward to Superdrive Update 3.01, or something that will correct this issue again in the future. As it now stands, Apple will replace my system board to fix their error.

I've also been suffering from hard-drive and/or system lags (spinning beachball for 5 to 20 seconds) and clicking noises on my MacBookPro3,1 (Santa Rosa, 2007) since installing Snow Leopard.

I checked the SMART status of the drive, there seems to be no problem.

But there are no updates for older Macs, either. Does anybody else have these problems with a pre-unibody MacBook?

ask the russian hackers who mangled that method of syncing the pre and the palm marketing people who describe it as legit. the blackberry sync or the moto sync hasn't broken because they used the API.

Late '08 15" Unibody here. This fix has improved the performance of my Mac considerably. I was dealing with the 'stutter' constantly and now its gone. It's how my machine SHOULD have ran when I bought it!!!
