VMware Fusion 3.0: Take 2
Update 5:30p: VMware's Pat Lee has acknowledged the problems on the serial-number system and has posted a universal 30-day trial license code and download link to allow users to install the new version.I never was able to upgrade to a paid version of Fusion 3.0, so I downloaded a demo version and 2.5 hours later received a 30-day serial number.
Installation was trivial, but now I can't find my old version 2.06. That would be bad for people who are trying 3.0 and decide to go back to an older version. I tried a Spotlight search, and my older version is nowhere to be found. That's not good. Has anyone else making the upgrade experienced this? Update: Commenters make it clear that 2.0 will automatically be removed when you move to 3.
I'd already upgraded to Windows 7 on version 2.06, so the same OS came up fine under version 3.0. One of the advantages of 3.0 is that you can assign multiple cores to the app, and since I'm running on a 2 x 2.66 Dual Core Xeon I assigned 2 cores.
Start-up was faster than the old version. About 45 seconds to the Windows 7 desktop, and a few more seconds to bring up a couple of gadgets and settle down. Launch times of apps seem pretty fast, but I don't find the difference dramatic.
My graphics card is a Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT. I won't get all the Aero effects, but I do get transparency and some other visual eye candy. VMware is now the first of the virtualization packages to support Aero and Flip3D, and it also includes OpenGL 2.1 and DirectX 9.0c.

A new menu bar appears in Fusion hovering at the top of the screen. It is helpful when in full screen mode, and gives you quick access to the virtual screen controls without having to see the Mac menu bar.
This new version of Fusion has a PC Migration Wizard, making it quite easy to migrate a physical Windows PC into the VMware virtual machine.
You now get an app menu as part of Unity instead of seeing the start menu when you are in that mode.
Overall I find the new features helpful but not outstanding. The performance of version 3.0 seems faster, and I hoped to do some benchmarks -- but as I said, my old version of Fusion is missing in action.
Fusion for first-time users is US $80. An upgrade from version 1.x or 2.x is $40. There is a half-price education discount of 50% available here.
I'll caution our readers again that VMware seems to be having problems taking orders and finding serial numbers of some registered users. It may take a while to settle down, but you can do what I did, which is download the demo and let VMware mail you a 30 day serial number.
I think Fusion 3.0 is a worthwhile upgrade. Combined with some of the speed improvements in Windows 7, there is no doubt that everything runs a bit faster, and the Snow Leopard compatibility and the always-on application menu let you run Windows apps in a very unobtrusive and integrated way.

Anyone know how to disable/turn off the damned menu bar while in full screen? I use full screen because I don't WANT extraneous crap showing (including using auto-hide to move panels/docs/taskbars off screen) -- I don't understand why people think this is such a neat feature!
Please, anyone know how to kill it?
I gave VMware Fusion 3.0 a try for the first time today on a 27" iMac running Snow Leopard. Without any problems VMware Fusion 3.0 installed Ubuntu 9.04 from a CD with the Ubuntu ISO on it using the VMware's Easy Install feature. The VMware Tools installed automatically (don't follow the forum instructions you won't need them). Everything is running great, EXCEPT for the download speed while running the Ubuntu Synaptic Package Manager and Update Manager in the VM. Download speeds are SLOW. I've switched between NAT and Bridged networking in the VM setup, no difference. Using Firefox seems fine but the slow download speed while trying to download packages make it unusable.
Does anyone know what is going on with the download speed when trying to download packages? Switching to 2 CPU's instead of 1 also doesn't help the IO. -thanks
I use only NAT and have no problems with download speeds on any of my VMs. I'm using a 27" iMac w/8gb and I'm on gigabit ethernet LAN, but even when on my crappy home network (damned FairPoint...) using a much slower MB with only 2gb of RAM, I don't see an appreciable slowdown.
I've got XP, xUbu9.10, OpenSolaris and even a PC-BSD VM in play and they're all very happy under 3.0.
Now, if only I could make that &$!*(&^$*&!@$@#!^&*%#!@*&^ menu bar go away when in full screen mode...
I purchased the VMware Upgrade for $39.99. While it's a solid product, I wish I had simply bought Parallels which is selling for about the same amount on Amazon right now. I think $39.99 is way too much to charge for this upgrade which has nice improvements but nothing I gotta have. Others thinking of upgrading should consider downloading the free trial of Parallels and trying it before you send $40 on this. Too greedy Vmware and now I am going to sample the competition.

October 28 2009 at 1:10 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyStill trying to get it to 'register' my 2.0 s/n so I can upgrade, somebody really dropped the ball here.
Also, I note that it promises significant speedups under 10.6 WITH A NEW INSTALL OF XP (or Win7), am I going to have to reinstall my VM to get all the benefits of 3.0?
A 'fresh' install of XP is noticeably faster in 3.x than an XP VM that has been merely migrated from an older version of Fusion.

I've got 3D acceleration turned on, and I'm using the faster graphics card on the Mac. Can my computer not handle it?
October 28 2009 at 11:16 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI live in Fusion all day long and throughout the 2.x branch, guest performance went downhill, so I would always go back to 1.1.3 after trying to live with a 2.x build for a few days. Then came Snow Leopard and rendered 1.1.3 and all but the latest builds of 2.x useless. So, I hopped on the 3.0 beta and was somewhat happy as its performance was slightly better than 2.x, but not quite on par with 1.1.3. Then my vmdk became corrupt. I am now back on Leopard with 1.1.3 and am very happy that I have guests that perform to my satisfaction. I guess my MBP2,2 w/ 4GB RAM is showing its age.

October 28 2009 at 9:54 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI had the same problems not receiving the new serial number when I upgraded yesterday morning. However, I was able to log into my account on VMWare's site and get the new number there immediately. I too am a little underwhelmed with the performance. While my expectations may be unreasonable, I thought I'd at least be able to play COD 1 through Steam on my Unibody Macbook 2.4 with 4 gbs of RAM (XP on BootCamp partition imported into a VM). Not an option however as the low frame rates make it unplayable. I tried several different configurations of CPUs and memory and turned the game down to the lowest settings but no luck. As always, XP does boot faster into Fusion than BootCamp so there is at least that advantage.
