Anomalous AIM Activity Afflicts Adium, Aggravating All
For the past several weeks I've noticed some rather strange behavior with Adium, the free and open-source multiservice IM client. On random occasions I suddenly appear invisible or offline to contacts in my buddy list while logged into my AIM account. And I'm not alone. Not a day goes by that I don't find myself asking a friend or co-worker why they are not online, only to learn they share the same problem. Either that or they're all making this up in effort to avoid conversing with me -- I have that effect on people. The only cause to this problem, or pattern to its occurrence, I can come up with is a loose theory that it happens during periods of inactivity. My hunch is that when you appear "idle" AIM somehow misinterprets this as a disconnect. Locally you remain logged in, but AIM thinks otherwise. Luckily I may have discovered a workaround.
Launch iChat (quitting Adium is not required) and go into Preferences. Click on Accounts. Make sure your AIM account is selected, then click on the Security tab. Changing any of the settings in this options panel, then returning them to their original state, somehow magically vexes the problem, at least so far as I can tell.
I don't know whom to point fingers at in this case; AIM or Adium. Both begin with the letter A, so that makes each of them equally culpable in my opinion. Wherever the guilt may lie, I just want the problem fixed ASAP.

Adium has bricked two of my AIM accounts in the recent past.
It changed my password without my knowledge. All of a sudden I can't sign in anymore. Says my password is incorrect.
Needless to say I've ditched Adium and haven't went back.
Adium cannot do this.
October 29 2009 at 12:51 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI was having the same problem with both Adium AND iChat, but I found several fixes that have worked for me. First of all, if you're using AIM for iPhone or iPod touch, the default is for it to remain logged in for 24 hours when you exit the app so AIM seems to be having a problem deciding which program gets priority (Adium or AIM for iPhone) so if you're invisible on one, sometimes you're invisible on both whether you list yourself as available or not on Adium. Just go into preferences on the AIM app and switch it to log off "immediately" and that should do the trick. If you want to keep it logged in for push notifications go into your iChat preferences (not Adium) and set up that you do not want multiple log-ins under account settings. Note you must take your account offline to change this option. The reason you need to go into iChat is because Adium doesn't seem to offer this setting change. If you're still having problems, again, go into iChat and charge your port settings to 443 and you should be good to go.
October 28 2009 at 11:50 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyFYI, there's this ticket http://trac.adium.im/ticket/13085 which *should* be fixed in the latest stable and beta releases (1.3.7 and 1.4b12 respectively).
Feedback if that's the actual bug or not and whether it's actually fixed or not is appreciated.
I've had this problem on and off in the past week or so. I had another strange issue on Adium as well, I set my AIM up so that only contacts on my contact list can send me messages. I've set this privacy setting up with both iChat and Adium. For about 3-4 months I've been been receiving random messages from people who are not on my contact list. Then when I look at my privacy settings in Adium, it reverts to "Block only certain contacts" or "Allow anyone." I of course change it back to "Allow only those on contact list" but some how it reverts back. I also use the AIM app on my iPhone, but I really doubt that is the problem. Occasionally I'd also be unable to see people on my contact list along with this problem and have repeated the same steps as people have posted here to fix that. I just don't want to deal with random people messaging me out of the blue and no way to fix this problem. :(
October 28 2009 at 6:18 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI had this problem yesterday, but I do not have AIM, i use my google talk account, and only one person showed up as online (and away), all other people were shown as offline (not the real scenario).
Sounds like a weird bug - snow leopard related? it was working fine last week....
This is also an issue with Google Talk on Adium. My friends would think I was offline, and then I would say something to them, and they'd say I'm marked as offline.
October 28 2009 at 5:09 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've also had this problem in iChat so it seems more like an AIM server problem. I appeared offline or invisible to my Mom while my son had no problem seeing me. Of course, he was testing it on the same intranet as me.
October 28 2009 at 4:08 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI found a situation when I had TOO many people on my buddy list... I pruned my list and suddenly I was online, my buddy list appeared, and I wasn't invisible.
October 28 2009 at 3:23 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOh and btw, this issue got WORSE when I upgraded to Snow Leopard.
October 28 2009 at 3:04 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIve had the same issue for some time now, but only when I'm at home. And thats when I realized that it was some how related to my computer constantly disconnecting and reconnecting to my router (even though it appears to stay connected through the whole ordeal). My temporarty solution has been to use an ethernet cable directly into my laptop, instead of using airport when Im at home.
I also use my laptop on the wireless at work and it has no issues there.
