iTunes 9.0.2 is out, Apple TV 3.0 as well, and they love each other

Engadget is reporting what everyone who has a twitchy refresh button already knows: iTunes 9.0.2 is out, bringing support to Apple TV 3.0. The iTunes update is available through Software Update, and the Apple TV update is right there in the box that says "Apple TV" on it.

The Apple TV update refreshes the look of the main menu, Genius Mixes and internet radio. It also adds iTunes Extras and LP support. Here's the official press release.

Notice any other new stuff? Tell us in the comments.

iTunes 9.0.2

The Good. Darker backgrounds in grid view. (would be better black)

The Bad. Home button in iTunes store still in wrong place. Should be in the far left next to the back and forward buttons.

The Ugly. iTunes store redesign is still unusable. The search results still appear in a microscopic window with columns that do not show all of their information. The search results also still have equally microscopic scroll bar. Again, just as I said before this was a case of it was not broke so don't fix it. The old method of showing search results was perfect and should not have been changed. Ads and information was in the upper part of the window and the results were in the bottom, the main scroll bar would scroll the search results. The only reason I can come to for the new layout was to increase ad space. I will not be purchasing more tunes until the store is fixed. I may even go back to CDs or even (gasp) download illegally again)

So does it finally playback everything like VLC?
No, oh well....Best to stick with a Mac mini then...

Interesting that Apple TV now supports Snow Leopard's Wake on Demand, so even if your Mac's asleep, the AppleTV can wake it to get to its content. No Airport/Time Capsule required.

There is an issue with the Extra's and LP material... the iTunes store will be updating new versions that will appear in your download queue (at some point).

A bit disappointing really - not really a full point upgrade.

The new top level screen should cover flow whatever you highlight below but it just seems like a pretty front end on top of the same old 2.0 menu system?!?

How about enabling the USB port without the Patchstick? That'd make me a happy camper!

The Dark Grid view theme isn't black.. it's a dark grey. I hate to be a whiner and dark is good... but the old true black was better looking. Thanks Apple for giving in to the customer with the dark view though and not sticking to Steve's guns of knowing what's best for us

Huh? The grid view looks exactly how I remembered it from iTunes 8 now.

Can someone tell me: what video formats does iTunes support? Is it just whatever your Quicktime install supports? Including whatever codecs, F4M, Perian, etc.?

Just curious if Front Row/iTunes is a good home theater option...

Moose, no.

i gave up on the whole iTunes/Front Row, because of lack of being able to
play the following files without having to convert EVERYTHING into
Apple Compatible mp4 files:

xvid /divx avi files
mkv
mpeg-2
wmv

And that was with Perian and Flip4Mac installed.
I instead switched to Miro and have been happier,
as it allows for organization, and supports the
Quicktime plugin architecture, unlike Front Row.

@ Terry: That's a shame, but good to know nonetheless... Thank you Terry!

Anyone having issues with home brew iTunes LP files? such as the ones from http://ituneslp.net/ ? iTunes seems to ignore the file and just add the contents of the folder.
