Mac share of web browsing goes up after Windows 7 launch

It may seem a little strange, or downright counter-intuitive, but Net Applications is reporting that Mac OS X's share of computers using the web grew from September to October this year, while Windows' share of browsers declined.

Windows (all versions of the OS) totaled 92.54% of computers browsing the web, a .25% drop, while Mac OS had a 5.27% share, up 2.73% from September. The iPhone, by the way, had a month to month increase of 5.71%.

The numbers come from tabulating visits to 160 million websites.

Windows 7 got 3% share in the daily tracking, largely at the expense of Windows XP. If Microsoft was depending on Windows 7 to quickly stop the Mac momentum, it hasn't happened yet, but at the same time, most Windows upgrades take place when new machines are bought.

Also, the general release of Windows 7 didn't happen until October 22nd, so the jump in Windows 7 on the internet wasn't available for most of October except for pre-release users.

It didnt take hours and days to upgrade to Snow Leopard...put the disk in a couple of hours later....done!

I got so tired of trying to keep my windoze machine running and protected on the web. XP was full of holes, Vista even worse. Even with a hardware firewall the store that sold me the computer told me to buy an industrial strength router, instead I picked up a mac mini to use connected before my windows machine, it was cheaper and 5 years later, the savings on not having to buy anti virus subscriptions alone saved me money. I quickly found my cheap mac mini outperforming my more expensive PC and quickly found my PC collecting dust with my ears thankful for the lack of humming fans, even my power bill started to thank me for dropping an energy PC hog.

I liked that mac mini so much I quickly found I dont need to have a pile of tech support and a pile of protection software, OS X was easy to use and fast.

If you like changing your oil on the front lawn, spending a pile on beer, scanning n defragging and plugging holes and using IE that is full of holes, then keep turning wrenches and working in the muck with windoze 7 and IE. That or just get a mac and let it take care of itself.

I think people are starting to switch to Firefox or Safari, if forced to upgrade too much are even getting a new mac

Apple: Best Mac, iPhone quarterly sales ever

I dont call that a ringing endorsement for windows. It starts with the techies buying a mac and telling their friends to get one too. I suspect maybe some windoze slobs still like to get the neighbors machine so that they can get a few smiles and winks while they work on the registry.

With an apple, if your repairing your neighbors and friends machines, your not likely to be having to do tech support, but instead can focus on making money, rather then tinkering with clunky PC cars that always break down.

I actually like the fact that I use a minority OS and as long as only one hardware manufacturer can legally sell computers to run that OS I expect it will stay that way for a long time to come.

These statistics are meaningless. The reason I imagine Windows share went down is because people are spending time upgrading their computers instead of wasting hours on the internet.

That and probably some big company put up a new firewall slowing down the amount of traffic from it's 4000 employees.

Honestly everyone we'll know in a year the impact of Windows 7 on the OS battle. Not after one month

I'm kind of split on this one. I expected the usual Windows upgrade of doom with drivers missing, OS hiccups, security hysteria settings ... and it simply can't be better for an MS OS. Everyone I've asked that is using a PC is really excited about W7 and it looks like for once they got it right. Those web browsing statistics' fluctuations are so small that don't show any trend so soon. I don't expect Mac users switching to Windows any time now companies will surely stay on the MS platform for the time being while a home user leak towards Apple will be lowered.

Obviously Mike you havent done your research on the boot 132 loader to install Snow Leopard on a dell.

http://tinyurl.com/yho3jrp

I suspect as snow leopards popularity grows that more and more drivers will start to be developed for the PC, by people who are fed up with Microsloths ways.

Microsoft is bleeding market cap, just like they bled after developing Vista, just like they bled after developing the Zune, just like they bled after developing Microsoft CE, just like they fleeced people into believing that windows ME would be better then windows 3.1

Microsoft sells you on anything it can, working or not, while it grows on people continuing to believe they are the "standard", but Open Office and other plays continue to eat into that very notion. They follow and never innovate, making cheap copies at best, while charging the farm.

Microsoft tries hard to hang onto its grasp of everything Bing, while the real Churro is blown on poor advertising and a product that doesnt work as well.

Its all about the dollars this day and age, if you cant make the money eventually you will shrink and disappear. Thats why Microsoft is hoping that all those who signed up for the windoze 7 download will pony up and pay the cash, after all the Vista horse came in dead last and the firm is hurting after the long horn. If your machine requires a bunch of things new, why not move to a mac? If you have to pay hundreds of dollars to buy a new version of windows to cover the version that didnt work, why not try the boot 132 and snow leopard instead and tell MS to put it where the sun doesnt shine! Obviously looking at MS eroding market cap that the techies are moving away from this platform and moving to the mac.

Snow Leopard on the other hand, shaved off 17GB on my install, getting leaner, meaner and even faster. Breathing new life into all those who own an older intel mac machine and it doesnt charge an arm and a leg for it either, nor does it require you to buy new hardware, like MS has with its "Vista ready....Ha ha!".

For those looking to upgrade, why not pick a machine that is less susceptible to viruses when browsing?

After all isnt snow leopard priced at about what a retail copy of anti virus protection is priced at? The upgrade version also contains a full install, perfect for someone looking to ditch windoze for good.

I used windows for a while, then I wised up and move on, haven't looked back. Safari is peppy as all get up, while IE is swiss cheese holes...so even if I owned a PC I'd still use safari and dream of owning a mac, rather then catch a few more bugs using Internet Explorer on a PC.

I think the best comparison is looking at the market cap of Microsoft compared to Apple.

http://tinyurl.com/ddbxew

The facts are, that Apple is catching up to Microsoft and will soon surpass Microsoft. No matter how many Microsoft keyboards, mice, flavours of windows or mobile windows or Xboxes....Apple will soon be BIGGER!

If your buying a new machine, why not just buy an Apple that can run any operating system?

If your stuck with a PC why not try Snow Leopard and boot 132 loader to get your PC running like a mac? That or buy a used macbook for $300 or save to up to get a new machine?

that's a brilliant comparaison. especially since they don't really directly compete in any one market.

MS sells software licenses and some hardware.
Apple is a vertically integrated CE company.

And you want to relate their market caps to the article about Mac vs PC web browsing.. market share stuff, another market where they don't directly compete. Maybe if you could install OS X, off the shelf, on a Dell, this wouldn't be moronic. But you can't.

Furthermore, the Mac is only one of Apple's big 3.5 businesses. All those businesses are reflected in the Market Cap. So don't you think its a terrible way to judge the popularity of the Mac?

Market cap? Seriously? Who told you that was a valid comparison? What was AAPL's cap vs MSFT in '97 when they lost over a billion dollars and Redmond gave them a nine figure cash infusion? Stock prices rise and fall for a variety of reasons and how the market values a stock doesn't always translate to market share. AAPL currently has a P/E Ratio of 30 which is Dot Com Bubble territory so don't expect the ride to last.

Actually, I just semi-forcibly 'switched' my wife this weekend. I'm a begrudging Mac Switchee, (FCP/Video etc..) but after using it for a couple years, have come to appreciate it.

It was easy for Windows users to 'avoid vista' but now that Win 7 is out, you kind of have to 'switch' from XP. Aero is not the same as XP, so if you're going to make the effort to learn something new, Mac is about the same amount of effort.

Looking at cheap desktops or laptops for her (no real reason for portability) we went with a Mini for slightly more than a PC. (when you include wireless N/bluetooth etc, it was like $50 difference with her educational discount)

And even though she keeps griping about the differences (3 days later), I have a feeling she'll really come to like it more, and 'enjoy' the little things (iphoto etc)

Basically, after windows 7 came out and installed it on my boot camp, I decided if I was going to deal with my wife griping over something new, I'd probably have much less griping in the long run if it were Mac.

(Yes, I know I could turn Aero off... but why emulate obscolete interfaces?)

Give Windows 7 a fair chance - jeez. It probably takes users a few days to get their Internet connection working with Win7 :-)

It's not really surprising. People hardly switch from Mac to Windows 7, they switch from earlier versions. That's also what Microsoft plans - they can maybe stop people from switching with 7, but they know most won't come back.

How is this mudslinging? I could understand if the article said "windows browsing share only goes up .01 percent after Windows 7 launch" that you would say give it a chance, but they are simply pointing out an factual oddity. That after the launch of a major OS, it's browsing share goes down and another OS's goes up? I don't believe that these numbers really mean anything, but it is wierd, and by no means bashing an OS in its early stages.

It's not strange. People are not migrating from Mac to Windows, regardless of the "newness" of Windows 7.

All Windows 7 can do is try to prevent losing more Windows users to other platforms. However, because Windows 7 is a clean break from XP it actually opens a door to allow Windows users to leave the platform altogether. If anything, I'd expect more users to migrate to Mac, at least in the short term.
