Heads Up: Update your Apple TV to 3.0.1 ASAP, says Apple

We've heard a few reports of sync issues with the new Apple TV 3.0 software over the past few days, and apparently the chatter on the Apple support boards was on the mark: Apple has shipped 3.0.1, which is supposed to fix problems where 3.0 units would unexpectedly dump all their loaded content. You can get all the details from Apple's tech note. [According to our commenters, in most cases the content was not gone, simply invisible; a reboot of the ATV might bring back the media.]
Since it's a giant pain to resync gigabytes of media over the network link, it's nice to see this fixed promptly.... but considering that the Apple TV 3.0 update was billed as a major improvement to Apple's 'hobby,' this bug is not going to make any fans out of Apple TV foes.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Am I the only ATV user that streams everything? Can someone explain why you would bother to sync the physical files to the ATV box? Is it simply a bandwidth issue or is there some advantage I'm totally missing?
And why have them only there and not backed up in iTunes and/or an external HD?
Really, I never sync anything but photos (to use with the screensaver). I use a C2D iMac with a 1TB as a media server nd stream everything to the two AppleTVs. Over 802.11n, there's hardly ever a glitch.

For instance, my main system is a laptop and when I am at work it's with me. A streaming setup would make the ATV unusable by others until I got home.
November 10 2009 at 6:48 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAfter 3 years and 3 AppleTV's all going faulty not long after the 1 year warrantee, my Love affair with AppleTV has ended.
Apple rather expensive hobby is being superseded by many other media center systems and the hardware is really showing it's age now.
So for me the update has come to late and is to little to make a difference, and I won't be rushing out to buy another appletv for it to go wrong in a year.
Why don't apple just sell a slightly cheaper Mac Mini with a special AppleTV IMAGE DVD you can buy and turn your system into a media center.
Be a hell of a lot easier.
My content was just erased sometime this past week since I watched a movie last weekend. I found it was all gone this morning. I updated to 3.01 and it was still gone.
My original Mac mini had a bad logic board, which Apple replaced, but I've never been able to sync to it after the repair without losing content.
Too late, I finally pulled the HD from my ATV this afternoon and found a folder on the Media partition labeled, "Purchased". I recovered some but not all of my purchased content since 12/08. The rest is permanently gone unless I can recover it with disc recovery software.
If your warranty has expired, you might try this to recover what you can.
after updating to 3.0.1 I cant see any of my artwork as a screensaver. Anyone else having this issue?
November 08 2009 at 11:53 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've also had problems with my Apple TV refusing to acknowledge, authorize or play content. When it was in the shop last week, the 'genii' denied that there was possibly any problem with the Apple TV.

November 08 2009 at 8:48 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyEver since the 3 upgrade, I now have to reboot my AppleTV every time I switch my av receiver to it. The ATV is connected via HDMI and when I now switch to that connection the source is not found. After a reboot the it is found. This was never a problem before the 3 update.

Is TUAW becoming the Fox News of the Mac blogging world? Will TUAW just leave the AppleTV alone and stop writing agitation pieces about it? Unlikely. But what's the value of this piece? There was a bug in the AppleTV software release (gasp! a bug in software!!!!! horrors!!!!) and Apple took the rather unprecedented step of informing their user base about it and rolled out a fix. All of us with AppleTV's know about the issue and the fix, so what's the point here? Again, do TUAW bloggers have a word count quote that they need to fill? Though it is amusing to read the dumbass remarks from Shocked And Outraged Users (tm).
Agreed;
Apple TV is simply an extension of your iTunes library just like your ipod, iTouch and iPhone. Nothing more. It works extremely well for that role (as it was designed).
It is not having bugs (all software has em); its how you react to your customers when a bug is discovered.
let's see: they find a bug and fix it, and people complain. They don't fix a bug, and people complain. A pattern is beginning to emerge.
