ScanSnap Manager updated for Snow Leopard
Fujitsu has finally updated the ScanSnap Manager app for Snow Leopard. "Version 2.2 L12" is available for download for the following models:- ScanSnap S300M
- ScanSnap S510M
- ScanSnap S500M
- ScanSnap S1500M
The installer also forces the ScanSnap manager into your Login Items which is only slightly less obnoxious than forcing itself into your dock.
Also, if you use FineReader for ScanSnap S1500M and S510M, the Snow Leopard update is still not available, but you can sign up to be notified when it is released.
Thanks to DEVONtechnologies for the heads-up!

Is anyone else confused by the ScanSnap Snow Leopard update? My ScanSnap software worked fine under Snow Leopard, the update didn't do anything for me except change the appearance somewhat. I still can't use FineReader to scan to PDF however, a capability I miss greatly... Why didn't they fix what was broken first?

Especially maddening given that the problem (and the fix) is so simple. A minor change in the PDF metadata, as documented in this forum thread:
http://www.documentsnap.com/abbyy-finereader-and-snow-leopard-file-not-created-with-scansnap/
Note that there's a handy Automator workaround in this thread too.

Thanks for posting this... I can at least hack this until AABYY comes out with an official release (or Fujitsu fixes the problem on their end- it seems like the bug is on Fujitsu's side). I noticed AABYY updated the Express version of FineReader, but that doesn't help users of the bundled version which provides different functionality. (I own the Mac version of FineReader Express, and it doesn't have a one-touch Scan to PDF capability. It ran just fine under Snow Leopard as well... i'm beginning to think announcing Snow Leopard support is simply a "look at me" marketing trick)
PS... the hack posted above may allow any old PDF to be OCR'd by FineReader? Interesting...

Anyone else try this? Scan to Folder still doesn't work.

I wonder why the article says the update fixes broken software. My ScanSnap Manager worked just fine with Snow Leopard.
Now I'm afraid of installing the update, I've come to rely so much on the ScanSnap S300M...

I have switched to Brother scanners. The drivers and software work great and do not take up many resources.

Does Brother make a scanner that's comparably fast to the ScanSnap?
Rob said 7:12PM on 11-16-2009
I don't know. It looks like most of the Brother Scanners scan at about half the speed of a ScanSnap S1500S. But I don't care that much about speed as long as it works.
And I have had great success with the Brother scanners and software (on Mac, Windows and Linux).

Yeah, the big appeal to the ScanSnap I think is the speed. It's amazing how fast I can run through a stack of documents on one compared to a flatbed's sheet-feeder.

I've switched to scannerpro for the iPhone, and the 300M is in the closet for 10+ page scans (VERY rare for me) due to the very lacking in quality software from Fujitsu - won't ever buy again, they remind me of the crap drivers (or lack of) from Canon for their printers.

Your link to Fujitsu isn't working, and I've searched their web site for 2.1 L12 without success. Besides, my old Scansnap software 2.1 L11 still seems to work OK in "standard" mode.

It's because TUAW's posting outdated news, and they probably copied the post from somewhere else without verifying.
In any case, ScanSnap Manager is up to 2.2 (note the .2) L12, and is available at the following URL:

You're welcome, and now I'm considering changing my name to "I Love TJ"...

Lighten up, Francis.
The update was just released. Let me know if you find a Mac website which reported it before we did. I saw it via Devon-Technologies, as cited in the article.
The .1 instead of a .2 was a typo. It happens.
For some reason the TUAW CMS added some spaces before the http:// in the link which is why it didn't work properly. Thanks for posting the correct one. I just had a chance to sign back in from full-time job and have fixed the link in the article.

I'm using S1500M with Yep! (the "Standard" profile, not "scan to folder"). Sure hope upgrading to Snow Leopard doesn't break this. This Fujitsu scanner has been incredible, and Yep! (1) has been pretty decent as well.

I'm still using the ScanSnap fi-5110EOXM and it is awesome.
Fujitsu seems to do everything they can to take a great product and do a miserable job of supporting it, promoting, etc.
I have been using ScanSnap with Snow Leopard without any trouble - Version 2.2L11.

Can we update if we're using the fi-5110EOXM? It's not listed as compatible with the update :-/

If you depend on scanning that recognizes text (e.g., scannable PDF, scan-to-word, etc.), then this Fujitsu update will not help you. It would be great if announcements about it made it clear that only some of the problems are fixed. For text recognition, you must wait for the ABBYY fineReader update for that functionality. Technical Support from ABBYY reported that their engineers say it will be available in the next two months.
From ABBY Technical support on 16 November, 2009:
Hello,
Thank you for contacting ABBYY USA Software House Inc.
We don't have an exact date, but the product manager told us that the
compatible version will be available within the next two months.
Best Regards,
Technical Support

Or you can deploy the Automator workaround I alluded to above, which uses pdftk to tweak the metadata in the PDF produced by the ScanSnap so that the b0rken version of FineReader will accept it. I've been using it for a while now and it works a treat.

Where is that new "S" icon from? Mine still shows a little image of my S510M scanner :(
