Psystar's predictions... they're a bit off

According to these documents, the company planned on selling 1.45 million Mac clone computers by 2011. The actual number sold so far: 768. What's even better is that these numbers are their "conservative" estimates. If you take a look at their more aggressive numbers, Psystar plans to sell 12 million by the end of 2012. Yes, you read that correctly: 12 million.
With the legal issues still ramping up, we can only expect to see even more (comical) news coming from the failed Mac clone company. Psystar even has gone so far as to say the battle is only helping them, keeping other clone makers from entering the market to "avoid the mess."

It would be amusing if we were to find out that Microsoft were a silent partner with Psystar.

No offense, as I own 2 Macs, but when it comes time to get a better computer for my studio, I am probably gonna buy one of these... I don't feel like dropping $8,000 on a Mac Pro...

why would you waste your money???. If you want a "cheaper" clone you'd be better off getting yourself a "OS Xbox" box much better design & quality.

If you don't like them (which is clear from your post) why bother writing it? All you are doing is giving them free publicity.

I don't dislike them. But whether you like them or not, there's no question that their expectations of sales are a bit off. If people happen to read this and decide to buy one, that's their choice, but the sales most likely won't ever reach the level they think.

It's just information. And judging by the BS, Psy is just run by nuts. THey are trying to maximize their individual profit (each of the execs) before they finally fold.
They might have a few deep pocket donors but they are using Psy as a writeoff. There is no way they are expecting a profit.

I think it's clear that John was taking the pi** out of them. At the end of the day, they annoy Apple and at the other end of the spectrum, they annoy the hacking community.
Down with Psystar!

I love that graph.
I keep wondering if there is some motivation behind Pystar other than sheer, unadulterated lunacy. Something diabolical and brilliant. It would restore my faith in humanity. I mean, people invested in this mess!

Ha! Glad you like it. I had fun making it.
Totally agree with you. I feel like you'd hit enough road blocks and disappointment and realize that your idea just isn't working the way you'd hope. Oh well.

whether or not their predictions are correct, I'm glad they're around and still fighting to stay afloat. It's good for the market, and keeps Apple on their toes. The same goes for Jailbreaking the iPhone. The unauthorized 3rd party will always help the market stay in check.

I didn't even make that connection to jailbreaking. Really good point. If they didn't exist, I'm sure Apple wouldn't be fighting as hard for their product in some regards. Just as the jailbreaking keeps Apple improving the iPhone's software out of fear more and more people will do it, I think Psystar is doing something of the same sort.

BUT, at the same point, I think they're a little off target as to what their customer base is and how popular they actually are in the industry. Which is where this post comes from.

I think Psystar is run by the same people as SCO.

I like these guys. After all, they do not claim they'll sell you an authentic Apple hardware. After all, they do what they advertise- sell you custom assembled PC's that run MacOS. What's wrong with that?
I am a software creator myself, and I don't mind people using my software (if they could) on other hardware (if I made one)...I understand the marketing and financial side for Apple, but hey, it's not illegal what Psystar does.
After all, why does Apple sell Mac OS X separately if they allow you to use it only on their hardware and it comes with it anyway?
Cheers,

I think it is illegal what Pystar is doing, or did you not hear the summary judgement?
Apple sells their OS so that people who have purchased previous Apple hardware can upgrade to the newest OS. I am sure that a small fraction of the sales goes to hackintosh users, but that is not why Apple sells its OS.
