Psystar's predictions... they're a bit off

According to these documents, the company planned on selling 1.45 million Mac clone computers by 2011. The actual number sold so far: 768. What's even better is that these numbers are their "conservative" estimates. If you take a look at their more aggressive numbers, Psystar plans to sell 12 million by the end of 2012. Yes, you read that correctly: 12 million.
With the legal issues still ramping up, we can only expect to see even more (comical) news coming from the failed Mac clone company. Psystar even has gone so far as to say the battle is only helping them, keeping other clone makers from entering the market to "avoid the mess."

wow, they are the first start up with overly ambitious predictions of what their sales might be.
nearly every startup does this. they have to show a reason why they have merit as an investment. at least they had a real run with it.
and who knows, if they won the case they might have sold a lot more by 2011.
Anyone notice that the "actual sales" bar is below 0 ? I'm assuming you guys are taking into account sales (- legal fees) on that graph.
November 30 2009 at 12:42 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI don't recommend anyone getting these. We have one in our art dept and they are very unstable. We run the same software on a mac pro without any issues. Apps crash left and right and everything is sluggish. Nothing beats the real thing. You don't get any real support. Steer clear. You're really getting what you pay for.

November 29 2009 at 11:18 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Reply@Elliven - Do you really want the Mac market to get watered down by Dell-like clones? I understand the wish to support 3rd parties and the small guy (I'm one of them). However, this reminds me of how, too often in our culture, we choose knuckleheads as heroes - a la Rodney King and Babe Ruth - by overlooking their overwhelming fallibility. If we manipulate their actions just right, forcibly fusing their actions and our motives in order to justify them as heroes, we can place any fool on a pedestal. If your looking for David to slay Goliath, I suggest there are far better technological heroes than Psystar.
As far as as the Psystar estimates, what investor would put any significant money down on such questionable predictions? Based on what? If I had riches to invest, based on those estimates, Psystar could have promised me $$$millions AND Jessica Alba in my bed, but I still would have laughed them out the door. Somebody was a real sucker in this "investment." Also, if they believed their own predictions, then acting as though Psystar was some techno-folk hero not completely motivated by greed appears disingenuous.
Frankly, I have no idea how the "Mac market could get watered down with Dell-like clones." That statement doesn't make sense.
But I'd be more than happy to see some real competition in this category. I have a ton of time and money invested in the Mac. At this stage, professionally and timewise, it's next to impossible for me to move away from Apple. So really, I'm buying in a one-vendor world. That's never a good thing for the consumer.
Elliven,
If the little scrappy guy wasn't out to destroy Apple's business model by illegally selling pirated copies of Mac OS X, I'd be glad to see them succeed, but Psystar is engaging in what is copyright infringement on a wholesale scale (if one could call 768 units sold wholesale, LOL!).
No, Apple's business model is NOT monopolistic, darn it! They have what is known as a vertical business model - they build the whole widget. That gives them total control over the user experience, so they can provide the experience they want to sell.
That has been fantastically successful for them, as their continuing to break sales records shows. As a shareholder (and thus an owner), I am fully supportive of that business model. As a customer, yes, I've gotten a bit irritated at times, but overall, I like Apple products and will continue to buy them as long as they fill my needs.
Jailbreakers are perfectly legal in what they are doing, as long as they understand that Apple won't bail them out if they screw up their stuff. Just like you can customize your car, you can customize your computer or your phone - you DO own it after all. But you cannot MAKE MONEY off of that process, or you will be in the same legal trouble Psystar is.
"If the little scrappy guy wasn't out to destroy Apple's business model by illegally selling pirated copies of Mac OS X, I'd be glad to see them succeed"
So according to your line of thinking, selling 768 units puts Psystar in a position to destroy a giant corporation like Apple. Your logic is amazing.
And look how annoyed you became when I used the word "monopoly." What is it about Apple that makes people so defensive?
I don't believe I have seen anything saying that all the copies of OS X provided by Psystar were "pirated". Source for this to back up your assertion please...
If the copies are pirated, ie copied and not paid for, then this becomes an illegal act.
If they are legit paid for copies that are installed on a machine contrary to the licence, then it is a violation of a commercial contract - ie the licence agreement - and is not a criminal act.
The iPhone jailbreaking scenario that you state is 'perfectly legal' per your post is exactly the same - a violation of the EULA which putting an OS that is not designed to be on specific hardware on that hardware... so you are being slightly inconsistent with the application of your logic.
Personally, I am not against Mac clones out there. I wouldn't buy one myself and would continue to purchase Macs, but I see no problem with the choice to be out there for people to have.
So many Apple customers (and thats all most are to them on this board - I'd bet not that many shareholders with significant ownerships) stick up for the company so vehemently that I wonder if there are cash incentives offered to do so after a certain number of systems have been bought.
If so, come on Steve, I've had 5 and will be buying another in the new year so show me some love and I'll defend you as loyally as any of the other incentivised fanbois...
I don't get it. Here is a scrappy little company hanging on by sheer cojones and everyone roots for the big corporation and mocks the little guy. How did so many people come to be so brainwashed by Apple? Yes, I understand that PsyStar is doing something illegal - and they're being forced to address it in court. But for sheer ballsiness, come on guys - this is the kind of independent spirit we need in the market. Apple is a great company but its business model is highly monopolistic. Consumers NEED folks like the jailbreakers and the iPhone Dev Team and PsyStar - if nothing else, to keep Goliath from getting too arrogant. I have 4 Intel Macs, 3 iPhones and a slew of other Apple gear - but I'm still rooting for the Davids of this world.

Apple doesn't sell OS X separately - the boxed version is an upgrade. The EULA clearly states that you must have a previous, licensed version already on your Mac in order to install the upgrade.
Yes, what they are doing IS illegal - they are violating a commercial agreement - for profit. THAT is illegal.
Hi,
Just checked with the Apple Store...you were right. I don't know I was left with the impression that they sell the OS in a separate box, 2 versions- one for upgrade and one for new installs...turns out there's just one, and it's for upgrades. Only Mac OS X Server doesn't say it's an upgrade, but in the FAQ section at the bottom, it says it's against the license to install it on a PC...
So, I guess I was a bit wrong about Psystar...if what they do is illegal, I don't like them.
Cheers,
ILIYA
I like these guys. After all, they do not claim they'll sell you an authentic Apple hardware. After all, they do what they advertise- sell you custom assembled PC's that run MacOS. What's wrong with that?
I am a software creator myself, and I don't mind people using my software (if they could) on other hardware (if I made one)...I understand the marketing and financial side for Apple, but hey, it's not illegal what Psystar does.
After all, why does Apple sell Mac OS X separately if they allow you to use it only on their hardware and it comes with it anyway?
Cheers,
ILIYA

I think it is illegal what Pystar is doing, or did you not hear the summary judgement?
Apple sells their OS so that people who have purchased previous Apple hardware can upgrade to the newest OS. I am sure that a small fraction of the sales goes to hackintosh users, but that is not why Apple sells its OS.
they sell Mac OS X in stores because it gets updated every 18 months. you pay for new features. bug fixes are free.
you do not, of course, 'own' the software, and do not get to reprice it and resell it however you wish. obviously.
I think it's clear that John was taking the pi** out of them. At the end of the day, they annoy Apple and at the other end of the spectrum, they annoy the hacking community.
Down with Psystar!
