Apple reveals iTunes top sellers from 2009

It's December, and that means list season. Early this morning, Apple released the top sellers from the iTunes stores across several categories. The top music, television shows, movies, audiobooks, podcasts and apps sold in 2009 are displayed on a special page in the store [iTunes link], called "iTunes Rewind 2009." Here are some highlights.

The top three songs sold were "Boom Boom Pow" by Black Eyed Peas, "Right Round" by Flo Rida and "Poker Face" by Lady GaGa. I've never heard the first two, but "Poker Face" is a huge hit with my 6-year-old. It's nice to see kids music do so well. As for podcasts, I'm very happy to see my beloved Adam Carolla podcast [iTunes link] among the most popular.

The top-selling games (note that apps and games were separated) included The Sims 3, The Oregon Trail, Need for Speed: Undercover and Madden NFL 10 (Boom!). Top-selling apps included ReelDirector, which we reviewed here, Star Walk, MLB.com's app and a number of GPS apps.

For some insight on this year's winners as well as the editor's picks, check out the latest episode of the iTunes Weekly Rewind podcast [iTunes link].

You made it through 2009 (up to this point) without hearing "Boom Boom Pow" by Black Eyed Peas? I'm so 3008, you so 2000 and late!

Seriously, I don't know how you accomplished this feat, but congratulations.

Seriously. I WISH I could've gotten this far without hearing "Boom Boom Pow."

Personally, I'm looking forward so much more to DJ Earworm's annual "United State of Pop" mash-up, where he takes Billboard Magazine's top 25 songs of the year and combines them into a single mash-up track!

"Poker Face" and Lady Gaga being kid's music? Ouch. Cold.

Haha, are you serious about the music bestsellers? For an "up to the minute" blog on technology, some of you guys are pretty out of touch. I don't think I've ever heard Lady Gaga described as "kids music" before...especially Poker Face, which is her singing about how she uses men. Maybe stay away from the commentary next time?

I agree. I'm surprised that Dave Caolo would say this, as if you listen to the lyrics on almost all of her songs, they are not written for kids by any means. I can see why kids like the song, but many people like it, and the meaning behind the song, if you understand it, is certainly of a more mature subject matter then what written for 6 year olds..

Of course, maybe he meant this as a slight towards Lady Gaga... if so I don't know if that's fair or appropriate, but whatever. It's a blog.
