Beta Beat: Google Chrome beta for Mac available

Earlier today Google released a beta of their Chrome browser for the Mac, nearly 14 months after the Windows version. Chrome is built on the WebKit engine, just like Safari. I've only used it briefly (I'm writing this post with it now), yet a couple of things are immediately apparent.

First is the lack of a search box. Instead, Google has built the "Omnibox," which combines the search and address field. Begin typing and a list of results appears beneath the text field, including recent browsing history, search options and more. For a complete view, browse all of the results in a new tab. That's neat, but it'll take some getting used to.

When first launched, it offered to import my Safari bookmarks; a task it completed so quickly I thought there was an error. Tabs slide in and out of view and are smart enough (supposedly, I haven't tested this) to isolate crashes and keep them from bringing the whole browser down.

Give it a try, but remember that it's a beta. Leave your mission-critical tasks to the tried and true.

Hmm...I don't know about Chrome really being faster than Safari. Maybe once the page actually starts loading, but every time I open Chrome it takes about a full minute to resolve a non-existent proxy, the settings for which are either disabled or not included in the Prefs menu. Super lame. I'll stick with Safari.

I tried to import Firefox's bookmarks, history etc. Chrome worked for a long time consuming lots of CPU, and crashed before the importing finished.

Actually, it's much FASTER than Safari on my 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac. No comparison!

I do miss my 1Password integration though - that's a bummer.

Yup. You summed it up exactly. Tiny details that improve the user experience without finding it necessary to get all up in your face about it are the biggest reasons I'm a Mac user.

I really don't understand why people continue to use PC's in spite of so many compelling reasons not to. But I also don't understand how a person could look at Chrome with all those themes (and yes, I checked out every one of them) and not see anything except ugly, tacky and anti-mac.

But I don't need to. It works for me.

Wow guys. Give Google a chance...

This is a Beta, so of course a lot of essential features are missing.

I've been using Chrome on Mac since early Alpha (compiling my own builds) purely for the speed.

Google took the infamous Webkit and optimized it to a ridiculous amount. Resulting, Chrome is faster than any browser out for Mac.

Chrome also touts several great features other than its premiere speed such as tabs being their own processes and the Omnibox (which is your address and search bar in one, but sections and highlights URLs according for domain recognition).

In short, if you care about speed - use Chrome.

I've been using it for awhile and really like it a lot. But, I have many folders of bookmarks all labeled according to subject. In all other browsers I can "open all in tabs" the contents of any folder. I can't with Chrome and this I find annoying.

However, it's my main browser.

This thing is a CPU hog! Fan keeps revving up all the time while browsing, even on modest web sites.

Not so with either Firefox or Safari.

Speed is ok, but I'm pretty sure Safari on the Mac is very, very fast, too. At last that's what it feels like - and feeling is king.
