Create a Time Capsule gift box
If your Time Capsule is among the recently deceased, don't toss it just yet. The folks at Instructables have published photos of a dead Time Capsule that's been converted into a quite handsome gift box. The process looks like it was simple enough: Just remove the guts (here's how to get inside one), insert some attractive felt and a meaningful photo. Next, re-connect the top and bottom with simple hardware store hinges and you've got a gift box designed by Apple in California. Sort of.We love to see hardware re-purposed in clever and novel ways, especially broken bits that would typically occupy a landfill. For instance, check out the G4 mailbox and the ever-popular Macquarium. Old laptops can always become digital picture frames. The grandparent set loves these.

There is no reason why Apple should not replace all these deceased Time Capsules. Even if they are out of warranty, it is clear this is a factory defect, and they should replace it. If mine breaks (I did purchase the new generation Time Capsule), I will never accept a no on this. In fact, Apples policy on this seems to be in violation with European consumer protection laws.

December 08 2009 at 7:21 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI didn't even have a Mac under warranty and they are shipping me a another Time Capsule. Mine went out this weekend. I've read they have a list of S/N's they know are problematic. Anyway, mine should arrive tomorrow.

So, before you go gettin' crafty on your boat anchor of a Time Capsule, try getting Apple to replace it.
Anyone with a dead Time Capsule should call Apple and ask nicely for a free replacement. If you've got a Mac under warranty, it should be no big deal...
