iCam updated, now records video when motion is detected
I have always really liked iCam [iTunes link]. It will certainly be on my 'best iPhone apps of the year' list. Now it's been updated to automatically record video when it detects motion, and it allows you to play it back on your iPhone. This was a much requested feature, and in my testing it worked like a champ. iCam can use almost any webcam to monitor a location. I use my built-in camera on my MacBook Pro, and a Linksys wireless webcam to monitor my pet bird. I can set either camera to send an alert if they detect motion, and now, with the new feature, the software takes a very quick succession of stills (several images per second) that I can view right from my iPhone wherever I may be. You just hit the play button and you can see what or who set off the recording.
You can remotely turn on the image recording, and even the motion detection notifications. All this in a U.S. $4.99 app. To make it all work you'll need some software running on your PC or Mac, and that software is free for the downloading. If you have the cameras, iCam makes for a complete and low cost home security system. Setup does not require any firewall tinkering. It just works.
You can monitor up to 4 webcams, and see them all simultaneously on your iPhone. To get everything up and running you'll need an iPhone or iPod touch with OS 3.0 or above, the iCam app, and iCam Source for your home computer. The software runs on Windows XP/Vista/7 or OS X 10.4 or later. Here's a link to a video so you can see how it works.
Just the thing to keep track of the house/kids/pets over the holidays, or any time.

Dear Mel,
Just bought this app and the Linksys camera you linked you after reading your article. Can you please point towards some directions for how to get the Linksys WVC54GCA Webcam to work with my Mac. You mention in the comments that it works with your setup but no hint as to how you set it up... seeing as the camera is technically only supported on Windows some help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

how do you get the wireless set up with icam. I am not getting mine to work with my wvc80n to work

I was trying to use a free service for this. Then I remebered reading about dropbox.
I installed dropbox. Set up a free accound and set up icam to use the dropbox folder.
Then installed dropbox on my iPhone. It's works great and at no additional cost.
So in a misfortanate situation of someone entering my house and taking my computer I will still be able to get still pictures of the person as evidence to the burglery.
To Freak Mojo,
I've used it on my 1st gen iPhone with good results. I've recently upgraded to 3gs, so haven't tested the still pics format on the first gen.
Great little app, developer has worked hard to keep improving it also.

So why oh why can't the iPhone 3GS be used by a Mac computer as a webcam itself when plugged into it?
Anyone?
This is something I've been curious about as well. With the video capabilities, there's got to be some kind of app that can be written for it.
In the meantime, how well will iCam work on my 1st gen iPhone?
Is it possible to use this without your Mac waking up? I don't want my screen on my MacBook to illuminate if I am using it for security features. I'd really like to just set my Mac to record without someone being able to tell that it's recording. I know that there was something with Quicktime and fast user switching, but now the isight turns off if someone switches accounts.

If you want good and cheap video surveillance on a mac and iphone you should look at SecuritySpy 50 $ (OS X) and Remotepatrol 10 $ (iPhone).
The only thing what is missing is push notification on detection of motion, but you can fix this with an other app called PushMail 3$ because SecuritySpy does have the capability to send a email when motion is detected.
With iCam taking snapshots, you could easily make an automator folder action to email the said snapshots to you as they are saved to disk.
I'm enjoying iCam, myself... what I get through their iPhone app is much better quality than the video I get from the same camera through my iControl security service's web portal.
I think the tile of this should be changed from "iCam updated, now records video when motion is detected" to "iCam updated, now records picture snapshots when motion is detected"
it's take timed jpg snapshots of the object in motion. Not video.
I prefer it to take jpg's since I want to see if I can map a drive on the Internet to store these pictures as they are take. Maybe with some google code I can have them saved to my gmail account? This way if someone is stealing my computer I still have access to the pictures of who took it.
We have actually tested this using a mounted MobileMe iDisk and it works great.
Others have suggested using a DropBox or Amazon S3 folder as well.
Your timing couldn't be better. We also have rodents running around in the attic! Now we'll be able to see exactly what it is they're doing up there. Is there any one wireless cam that works better in low light, or no light environments?

Thanks for the great article, Mel!
