Accept credit card payments on your iPhone? Then there were two

While Square, the new venture from Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey that adds a credit card swipe reader to the headphone port of an unsuspecting iPhone or other smartphones, was busy demoing at Le Web, one of the heavyweights of the payment processing market was busy prepping an announcement of its own. Earlier this week, VeriFone announced PAYware Mobile, a combination iPhone/iPod touch app and swipe card reader that will enable merchants to accept and process credit cards on the move.

The widget is scheduled to ship in January and will be free with a 2-year contract with VeriFone (no word on the pricing plans yet the Los Angeles Times notes that users will pay an activation fee of $49, a monthly fee of $15 and a per-transaction charge of 17 cents). The reader is supposed to encrypt credit card data in hardware so that the iPhone never sees the raw card number, and the app will capture signatures using a stylus (at least that's how it's illustrated now). Check out the video above for a brief demo.

It should be very interesting to see how these two hybrid solutions make their moves into the payment ecosystem. Square seems to be aiming at more ad-hoc usage (artists, coffeehouses, etc.) for people who don't have merchant accounts, but VeriFone is all about big retail. Room for everyone! TechCrunch happened to catch a reaction interview with Dorsey today, it's worth a look.

I think these are great... but what is going to prevent someone from using a legitimate reader but with their own software which may or may not look like something that's legit?

I know in Canada we are getting all our old "swipe only" cards replaced with chip & pin cards but there are many vendors who still swipe them instead of using the new chip terminals. The fact that VeriFone is employing a swipe-only system seems to show that they'll continue to accept non-chip transactions for quite some time (at least in the US).

It would be great to have this kind of "security" so a customer would feel protected when using their card for a transaction on my iPhone.

I Tweeted them and found out that they will have a Chip-and-Pin version coming in the spring. :)

I thought they already had those in the Apple Stores. I bought something the other day and they did swipe my card on a device. Not sure if it was an iPhone or iPod Touch.

Yeah, they're not really competitors, although it may seem that way on the surface.

Square will be good for Craigslist sellers, tech support contractors, street vendors, etc.

VeriFone MAY do well in the retail space, but other than Apple and Microsoft retail stores, pretty much every retailer uses the traditional cashwrap setup. I'm not sure how likely a store like Macy's will be to move over to a "mobile cashwrap" setup and make the investment in iPod touches + 2 year contract with VeriFone. That setup works for Apple Stores, because they have several employees on staff to answer questions and pitch sales to people. Most traditional mall retailers tend to just let people walk around and let the products sell themselves.

The only reason VeriFone felt like they had to rush this announcement was so they could piggyback on Square being all over the news media.

When will Chip-and-PIN technology come to the USA?

It will really simplify these solutions and close a vast security and cost gap in them.

Come on, merchandising giants of the USA, unite and march forward...

My thoughts exactly, I've yet to see one that uses Chip 'n' Pin.

these card swipe apps and accessories are all well and good for the USA as they seem to use swipe a lot more over there but shouldn't they also feature chip and pin action as thats the main form of card payment in the UK as it is deemed more secure.

Ummm... What if you simply forgot to add the "wannabe-mac jingle" music into the video you were going to use to demo your product?
