Digital RAW Compatibility Update 2.7 available in Software Update

Apple today released a new digital RAW compatibility update for some Canon and Nikon cameras that shoot photos in RAW format.

This update extends RAW image compatibility for Aperture 2, iPhoto '08 and iPhoto '09 for the following cameras:

  • Canon EOS-1D Mark IV
  • Canon EOS 7D
  • Canon PowerShot G11
  • Nikon D3S
  • Nikon D300S
  • Nikon D3000

If you have one of these cameras, you should check out this update to work with your photos shot in RAW format with any of these applications. As always, this update is available through Software Update, but it doesn't seem to be posted anywhere on apple.com yet.

Apple still hasn't gotten their act together to support the Panasonic G-series cameras, the Oly E-1 or the LX3 - all high-end consumer cameras favored by pros as their 'fun' camera for personal work. I'm very disappointed that they won't even support these models via DNG, and that they are dragging their feet on supporting popular, well-reviewed cameras.

BFD. You still can't update to Snow Leopard if you want to use Canon's EOS Utility to take tethered pictures with Live Image Capture.

What about one of the best PS and very popular Panny LX3.
The camera has been out for 18 months and still no support.

I agree. Lightroom supports it. So your best bet is to abandon Apple's photo products like iPhoto and Aperture.

It appears that Apple has a strong aversion to supporting Panasonic (or Lumix) RAW cameras. Pity.

It's hard to love two things that don't get along: Aperture and Lumix.
After so long I'm tempted to abandon one of them.
Probably the smarter is to move from Aperture to Lightroom.

Such frustration! Such a pity!

Well not the greatest news for us 7D users and for Aperture as an application. If there is no support for mRAW or sRAW then I suspect these won't be included in Aperture 3 either. Now Lightroom Beta 3 seems to read the mRAW files just fine so it's hard to justify Aperture 3 as an upgrade if this lack of support for mRAW or sRAW continues.

Yes I know that I can bodge it but I just want a simple workflow not a fully extended one and how can I recommend Aperture when it doesn't support, and most likely isn't going to support the "lesser" RAW formats, especially as the 5DII is still waiting for sRAW support.

There will likely never be any DP1/DP2 love. Apple engineers have commented on the Foveon sensor before, and said that it would require a complete overhall of the way the process RAWs. I've had a pile of Sigma SD10 files for years - I just keep a lightroom library for them...

Hey Kent,

I shot in the regular RAW format. So if it's accurate that it's not supporting the mRaw and sRaw formats then that's pretty half a$$ed..

Well ok it's now working for me but only on NEWLY shot images. All the images I've shot over the last month or so in CR2 still are broken.

So we're halfway there Apple.

Mat, did you take those photos in mRAW or sRAW by any chance? I took some in mRAW and they aren't supported in Aperture. I then did a test with an sRAW photo and it wasn't supported with. Looks like Apple decided to only add support for the regular, full resolution RAW images from the Canon EOS 7D. Definitely dissapointed about that, as I hear Lightroom/Adobe supports all three RAW sizes.
