Get your current weather from Outside

Outside [iTunes link] is a new, personal weather app for the iPhone/iPod touch that provides a visual forecast with some paid options for push notifications. I like the idea of the app; it has some nice graphics and a fresh approach to weather information. The GUI is based on a metaphor of looking out a window: you can get the current conditions or a five-day forecast, if you want to glance into the future. For the relevant stats, like humidity, cloud cover and winds, you just flick up the screen, and it'll tell you everything you need to know.

The app also features an interesting pay model: when you buy the U.S $2.99 app, you get 30 days of push notifications for free. Then it's $0.99 for the notifications every three months. Notifications include letting you know if rain is in the forecast, the UV index when it goes above a set level, a warning if the temperature goes below your preference, and a notification that the weather is OK to wear a T-shirt.

There are a few things that would make this app better. First, it'd be nice to reduce the need to flick the screen so often. The five-day forecast could be placed on one page, not five. And the notifications are unique, but a bit strange. I'd much rather be notified of upcoming storm warnings rather than T-shirt weather, but there is no such option -- especially since the notifications are so pricey (getting them for a year costs more than the app itself), it'd be nice to have some more options. And if you want weather from a different location, you have to enter that location manually. There is no list of favorites.

I think weather junkies would be better off with the Weather Channel app [iTunes link], which is free, Weather Channel Max for $3.99 [iTunes link], or MyWeather [iTunes link] mobile which provides very detailed info for a one-time $4.99, and includes (free) push notifications for severe weather. There is some clever thinking behind Outside, and it's a fresh approach to a function that's seen its share of rainy days. But I wish it had more information on the individual screens, and it wasn't so expensive to get notifications.

Thanks Robocat!
Good to see you responding on hear and listening to people.

Ive now taken WeatherPro off my iPhone and moved Outside to my first screen.
WeatherPro has far too much info for what I need, im just interested in the basics presented in a pleasing UI, so Outside is great for that.

Looking forward to the updates.

I quite like Outside, and installed it as soon as it came out.

But I find some things odd.

I want to swipe left and right between the forecast days when the more info is pulled down.

When its very cold outside like -4 c or more, the tree still looks like its summer! I would like it if the tree was whiter, looking frosty. There seems far too few looks to the environments outside the window.

At night, it would be nice to have some of the stars twinkle, and maybe every so often a shooting star.

The the biggest problem I have with with the app is the forecast for today. At the moment, it looks ok for the morning, but in the evening it looks v odd. Say I look at Outside in the evening, the first page has the tree with the night sky behind based on time of day. This is fine, but if I swipe forward, the first page is the forecast for the rest of the day, but even in the evening, its the middle of the day for the forecast. Outside should look at the time of day, look at the sunset time, and display the page based on this. No more forecast for sunny weather for the rest of the night!

Notification opt out settings would be good too. I would like to be alerted or rain etc before work in the week, but not at the weekend. Please have an option for what days these go off.

Overall I like the app, but it defiantly feels like a version 1.0

TC: Definitely some good points there. For swiping through in details info, we didn't want to confuse the user which day they were. We tried to avoid users get lost with all the swiping :) But we'll take another look at it. Good point on checking the temperature and add some visual effects on the weather representation. We'll see what we can do with some more visuals. We totally missed the one for forecast of today when it's evening!

Good suggestion on notification opt-out settings. We'll see what we can do about this part as well.

Hey Guys,

Michael Flarup here, the designer of Outside (i work with Willi over at http://robocatapps.com)

Just wanted to thank the TUAW guys for posting this. We know every app isn't for everybody, and that our approach to the UI and functionality is quite special. We've tried to differ from the many established run-of-the mill weather apps. We didn't think the world needed another WeatherPro, so instead we've tried to create a unique experience with emphasis on a 'fun' and enjoyable Interface that has the satisfaction of swiping through and discovering the forecast in a very visual way.

As Patrick mentioned, we've already got a lot of features planned for future release - especially severe weather warnings, but also a lot of other things that was slashed from the 1.0 version. And we'll certainly continue to listen to our users and try and make what we feel is a weather app we want to open every day. :)

There's always a lot of talk when a subscription model is introduced - the very real fact is that we're one of the first weather apps to pioneer custom push notifications. To make something like this feasible, we needed to factor in paying for the servers monitoring your notifications. And always remember that if you don't wan't to dish out the extra $0.99 for another 90 days of notifications, you still have a very potent weather forecasting app. All the remaining functionality in the app is still there, it's only the push notifications that's turned off. A discounted yearly subscription option will also be available in an upcoming version.

Thanks for showing interest in our app - we've tried to create something that wasn't already on the shelf and hopefully bring a more enjoyable weather forecasting experience to a lot of users.

I think it says a lot about the developers when one of them is willing to post on an article like this. It proves right there that they want their App to be successful and are willing to accept criticisms about the App itself. Don't forget that this app is also in it's first stages as it is at 1.0. I'm sure with time and with dedication that this app could become much more than it already is.

The developers have been tweeting about what will be coming with the next update and it addresses many of the issues that people currently have with this app.

Re: The UI

Is there something off with the preferences icon or is it just me? It appears as if the icon is from a straight-forward perspective whereas it should be from a slightly-to-the-left perspective. I think the cup has the same problem.

Just a thought. :)

You make a good point with the books. It should be a left to right perspective :)

Someone posted on Twitter, "Look How Beautiful the UI Is", and when I looked at the screenshot, I thought... Ohhhh, he made a funny.

But turns out he was dead serious. Am I the only one who thinks the graphics in this app are kind of childish looking?

And I agree with the OP, having alerts for Thunder, Tornado, and Severe Weather Warnings would be much more useful than knowing whether or not it's raining outside.

Just saying (and yes, I watched the demo video on their website).

Noah, I respect people have different taste in UI design. We tried to make the app fun, yet useful. Weather information can be a bit boring.

We are working on severe weather warnings. US data is available through NOAA, but we are still looking for similar data for other countries as well. We don't want those users to feel left out.

Hi,

It's Willi from Robocat, the developer of Outside.

Mel, you got the subscription part wrong. It's $0.99 for ALL notifications for 90 days, not only 1 notification.

I have send you an email as well, please correct this.

Thank you.

Why pay when there are two quality free apps available for weather? Accuweather and weather channel.
