XBMC "Camelot" update brings lots of new features

XBMC is the open source app that started off as "Xbox Media Center" (designed to be run on the original Xbox hardware), but has now blossomed into a full-featured media center that is usable on your Apple TV or Mac. Thanks to an app, you can use your iPhone as a remote as well.
The new version 9.11, a.k.a. "Camelot," has far too many new changes for us to list in their entirety here, but there's a revamped (and good-looking) user interface with increased skinning capability, updated support for different subtitles and video formats, new movie database scrapers for picking up information, and specifically in Mac OS X, support for the very popular Logitech Harmony Universal Remote. The devs say they're excited to get this one out the door, if only because it means they can move on to bigger and better very soon. Kudos on the release (during the holiday season!), and if you're an XBMC fan, have at it!

Add Navi-X to XBMC any version and you get movies, music, tv shows... hell even Jesus pops out of the X in Xbox and blesses you with a kiss on your forehead... XBMC + Navi-X = BETTER THAN ANYTHING ELSE EVER!!

Plex is great if you've got all your content stored in your standard iTunes/iPhoto/etc folders, but for content that is stored on other volumes it just doesn't work as well as XBMC. Everything listed in the comments above about cataloging tv episodes, custom views for different content etc. can be done in XBMC. It just needs to be configured.
That's the benefit of Plex. It works perfectly for people running a default stroage scheme. But for those of us who are working with something a little more complex (or maybe just a little more ramshackle), it chokes. And I've never been able to get it working properly with my Logitech Harmony remote, where as XBMC has been just fine. But that could be a problem on my end.
Plex does have much better plugin integration, for sure.
I run Plex on 3 Mac Minis which connect to a Mac Mini Server with 2TB FireWire drives attached. Everything works perfectly over AFP and the plugins are incredible.

December 29 2009 at 6:00 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyQuestion: what's the skin being used in the screen cap of this post?
With the introduction of Camelot, I pushed XBMC to a dedicated mac mini HTPC and I don't think I'm going back to Plex, at least not until they release the next major version with the supposed new and improved library functions. To me, XBMC seems more stable and polished and is more flexible with scraper settings. I like that it aggregates movie posters from both IMDB and TMDB for a video single source whereas Plex will only let you choose either/or.
Also, Plex used to drive me insane because I would spend a significant amount of time configuring my library, renaming items and changing the default posters/fanart, only to have it revert back to the defaults when a new item would be added to the library. XBMC seems much more stable in the respect.
As already pointed out, Plex does have an advantage with the streaming video plugins, but after initially setting up Hulu, Netflix, Apple Trailers, etc, I found myself never using any of them. I have a few TBs of content connected to, so this may not be the norm for everyone.
Rapier is the skin in the picture. Using it now. Simply stunning.

A plethora of developers is nice, but if not one of them has any design sense, then you've got Linux. Or Windows.
December 29 2009 at 9:20 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI tried and use XBMC, boxee alpha and beta and Plex. I simply don't understand the fuzz over Plex. It's an XBMC fork on OS X and uses by default the MediaStream skin. Of course, you can install MediaStream on XBMC although Confluence (the new default skin in 9.11) looks in my opinion much better. Or Aeon, Transparency! and Xperience for that matter.
Plex has better plugins. That might be true but for me the main point is local video content. In my case Plex's scrapers just don't work properly. Guess what: XBMC does a really good job. If I want to watch internet video, I rather choose boxee. For Hulu I use Hulu Desktop which is far more superior than any of the plugins. Plus, the fantastic iPhone remote app for XBMC.
Maybe I just missed the point about Plex, for me Plex isn't more OS X than XBMC.
I recently made the switch to XMBC on a custom linux HTPC (ZOTAC 9300 mini-itx mobo... simply amazing board!) for to 2 reasons. Plex just does not have the active developer community that XMBC has, and its obvious when comparing the feature set of the 2 branches. While Plex has a sweet app store, XMBC has Navi-X, which is basically the same thing (though less user friendly). The only thing I find missing is the iPhoto integration in Plex.
Throw the Rapier skin on the 9.11 build and you have a front-end that rivals anything available in funtionality and beauty. Couple that w/ VDPAU support (which Plex does not offer, though that might change w/ the new Broadcom miniPCIE card), and you've got hardware accelerated 1080p MKV/TS support that can only be described as amazing (eg, the flock of birds scene in Planet Earth @ 5% CPU utilization across both cores).
Cost me $500 for the parts to build my XMBC linux htpc, and I could have easily skimped on CPU and RAM, saving an prob $150. So $350 for a 1080p eating monster about the size of a mini (shorter by 2", deeper by 4"). I don't foresee a need to ever run Plex again, except of course in my bedroom where I have the mini streaming the same content but w/ more dropped frames ;)
Yeah I tested XMBC too... versions of long gone... and in its current form...
I can't really say why... but everything SCREAMS PC to me... while Plex feels more OS X-like. Feature-wise I could not really spot a difference...
To be quite frank tho... I probably do not use that many features of the software anyway.
Imo there's room for improvement with both of them... so let's just wait and see... I for once... have 'connected' my video library with BOTH apps...
I tried thisâfor about a minute. Granted, it's not a whole heckuva lot of time, but Plex, it ain't. I've used Boxee, Plex, XBMC, and about 2-3 others. You know what? Plex is pretty much flawless. Hell, it even comes with a folder action that catalogs your downloaded TV torrents into Name, Episode, and Season so that it can read it properly.
Can someone who has tried Plex, but stuck with XBMC, can they explain to me why? Cause... I don't get it.
Is this update for AppleTV too?
