GoToMyPC now includes Mac compatibility

After a long beta period, GoToMyPC is now offering a full Mac release version of the popular remote access software. The cheapest option for the software and service, which is called "GoToMyPC for Mac," allows you to access one other computer (Mac or PC) and costs US$19.95 per month after a 30 day free trial. The Mac version requires Safari 3.0 or newer, or Firefox 2.0 or newer, Mac OS X 10.4 or later, and either a PowerPC G4/G5 or an Intel based Mac.

There are other somewhat similar solutions, including Apple's Back to My Mac (if you get get it working on your router), and LogMeIn. Back to my Mac only works Mac to Mac, so if there is a PC in the mix you're out of luck. LogMeIn Pro sells for $69.95 per year for access to 1 PC or Mac, and higher priced versions allow Mac access from an iPhone app. Our readers also point out there is also a free version that allows only screen sharing.

GoToMyPC generally gets good reviews, and I would like it a lot better if the company would let up on the obnoxious and constant radio promotions for the software. The advertising has probably worked for them, though, because GoToMyPC is a big seller to both corporations and individuals.

GoToMyPC for Mac is available now. Wouldn't it be nice if they would just call it GoToMyMac?

Update- These comments from the LogMeIn folks:

LogMeIn has had a Mac version of our Free product - LogMeIn Free - for quite some time, which provides full remote control of a Mac from either a PC or Mac.

LogMeIn Ignition for iPhone provides remote control from an iPhone (or iPod touch) to a PC running Free or Pro, or a Mac running Free. It is a one-time purchase from the iTunes app store and not an additional subscription fee.

Our latest product for Macs, now in beta is LogMeIn Pro2 for Mac. It introduces premium remote Mac access, including remote printing, sound and file transfer/folder synch). It is available for free trial at this link..

I rely on GoToMyPC on a near daily basis to work on my office computer from home and it works flawlessly and reliably for years. I love that I can now access to or from a Mac!

I've tried Logmein and it didn't have nearly the performance or clarity of screen view.

I've been a gotomypc user now for some time. I find it a bit faster the logmein, and also the interface is a bit better.

I was also used the beta version of the mac version and found it to be a decent product. My company blocks logmein, but not gotomypc. I think how gotomypc encrypts and handles the traffic is a big reason why it continues to succeed.

I agree that LogMeIn is the way to go, esp. from the $$ perspective. And while I appreciate the articles main point of trying to report on new functionality of a major tech product, I agree with the other commenters that the article should be updated to reflect the free version of LMI ... Here's a suggestion for a future TUAW article: a side-by-side comparison of the two/three major remote login tools.

As for the Mac vs. PC debate that always seem to take over these Comments sections... people: get over it... use what you like and stop ragging on the other OS (and the people that use the other OS). I am an admitted long-time fanboy but I could care less if you choose to use Windows or Linux. I am not going to clog up the Comments sections of websites to proselytize one or discourage you from using another. I would prefer that these types of posts not clog up the Comments section so that I can get some use/value out of them.

I will say that I read TUAW because I AM an Apple fanboy... I don't read Windows/PC blogs on a daily basis because I have no need to...and when I do read Windows/PC blog sites (I have to use a Windows laptop at work, so I sometimes have problems I need solutions to...), I appreciate them for what they are and don't waste my and other peoples time by posting comments like 'this blog site is such a PC fan boy site'... duh! yes it is! And because of it, I appreciate their dedication to the OS and their depth of knowledge that the blog site provides ... probably to the point of solving the issue I had the led me to their site via a google search.

I am also smart enough to see a blog site for what it is and don't necessarily rely on it to be 'fair and balanced' in its blog posts...and when they aren't: let the commenters call the author out in the Comments sections...but please do it with facts and not with name calling. In the end, if you want 'fair and balanced', put your head in the sand and go back to your old media that purport to be just that.

PC means IBM Compatible PC which means it has a BIOS.

Macs don't have a BIOS, they have EFI and something that emulates BIOS, ergo a Mac is not a PC, it can just emulate one :)

@Joanna Your point is taken, but the popular lingo is PC=windows os, Mac=mac os, Linux box=linux os, etc. If you asked my mother, she'd say they're all computers, or PCs or Macs, whatever. But in the world of competing OSs, they've taken on specific names depending on their os. What's a Mac running Windows then? Maybe you're totally right in that case, a PC.

Longtime Linux user, recent Mac convert here. I'm wondering what, besides saving a little bit of work in the CLI and router, do any of these services provide over SSH and VNC?

They're all browser based, so you can get into them without a dedicated VNC client.

I haven't had the trouble with Back To My Mac that other people report. That being said, I have also used LogMeIn and that seems like a better overall solution if you need to check on other Macs than your own.

I agree, I don't know why this article doesn't mention Logmein Free - which does everything I need in a remote desktop app.
