Apple Stores have no gift registries. Bummer.

Lauren and I were chatting with Megan over on iChat today and trying to figure out how to set up her gift registry for her upcoming nuptials with her hawt Astrophysicist boyfriend. Of course, Megan is dying for one of those awesome iPhone remote dodads but we thought that we'd just go for more of a general Apple Store registry thing. I gave my local Apple Store a call to ask how we could get it established. The gentleman at the other end of the phone was polite. Perplexed but polite.

"Um...A gift registry? I don't think we've ever been asked THAT before," he said. "We don't have one. We're kind of a specialized store, you know." Yes, we do know. And it's the kind of specialization that we like. But even Home Depot has a gift registry service, so what's the hold-up Apple? Don't you realize that geeks get married and have babies too?

Sadly, it looks like Megan must rely on word of mouth instead. Don't forget, Apple does have a limit on how many gift certificates you can redeem at any one time online. I think it's something like 4 cards for online purchases but unlimited for in-store ones. Check with an Apple representative for details.

I can verify that yes, you can use up to 8 gift cards on one transaction. Why not have her make a cart and send it by email?

Apple Gift Card
You can redeem an Apple Gift Card in Apple Retail Stores, at the Apple Online Store, or by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE. Apple Gift Cards can be used only in the United States. With an Apple Gift Card, you can purchase just about anything sold by Apple (except another Apple Gift Card, an iTunes Gift Certificate, purchases at the iTunes Store, or iPhoto or Aperture Photo Services products), including products from both Apple and third-party manufacturers and developers. In Apple Retail Stores, simply present the card to the cashier at time of payment. For purchases from the Apple Online Store or when calling 1-800-MY-APPLE, (you may redeem up to 8 per transaction) enter or provide the 16-digit card number and 8-digit PIN (to be scratched off). Please keep the card in your possession until Apple has delivered your order. Your use of the Apple Gift Card is subject to additional terms and conditions, as set out on the Apple Gift Card.

Even better, you can check out givingpal, which has the same universal wish list as Amazon for wedding registries (you can import them too) - but also donates a portion of the gift purchases to your favorite nonprofit for free. Do good by shopping or sharing gifts from your registry!

Fantastic timing for me on this article, since I'd been eyeing a new Mac, and I proposed to my boyfriend on New Year's Eve. Yesterday, I'd been joking with another friend that I was wondering if Apple had a wedding registry, since we don't need a lot of the things that people normally register for, like dishes, flatware, and appliances. So we were going to be looking at a few offbeat things to register for. Thanks for the suggestions in the comments! :)

Yes as others have said use Amazon's Universal Wish List. Or just use the normal amazon list (or one of the other stores that carry apple products).

Oh and speaking of Home Depot, have you TRIED to use their registry??? What a nightmare. No online or electronic editing or even looking it up. Everything is on paper. You take your sheet of paper, walk around the store and manually write in the sku's! This was the reason we didn't register at Home Depot. We just asked for Home Depot gift cards on our web site.

Ikea also does not have a registry. Kohl's is a horrible piece of software. Targets works pretty well as does Crate and Barrel. I'm not surprised at all that Apple doesn't have one.

Shawn's point of the Amazon Universal Wish List is a good one--it also allows you add some non-Apple items as well--and, of course, Amazon's prices are a bit lower than Apple's own.

I can totally see the relevance of Apple products in a registry. My media devices and calendaring and etc. are all used more often than my blender (which I use, but rarely as a media device).

What I meant was that Amazon's wish list will let you add anything from any site.

So you could add something from store.apple.com if you wanted to

Love the tags on the article.

How many Apple products would you need to queue up to make it worthwhile?

Shame about the recent move away from all-white Apple products or you could sing Billy Idol tracks while you open all your gifts.

I think it's perfectly fine to register for things other than the stereotypical stand mixer for your wedding. My husband and I found a way around the stores without registries problem when we got married last year by using an online registry website, myregistry.com, because it will let you add things from any store. My husband registered for an Xbox that way and I was able to add a bunch of handmade things from Etsy. So I say go ahead and add your iPhone remote dodad to your registry, why not?

My husband didn't like the fact that a lot of the stuff on our registry (mixer, baking sheets, etc) were for cooking/baking, which I like. He's really into to brewing beer, and wanted more equipment for that. He managed to work something out with Northern Brewer - they were a bit amused by the whole thing, but we got a registry with them. He didn't get much, but he was pleased that he got a chance.

Yeah, Amazon always has a slightly better deal on Apple out-of-the-box products.

If you're registering for a custom Mac Pro, then you're probably best to get gift cards anyhow... Unless you know very rich/generous people.
