Found Footage: Bose headphones grafted onto Apple inline remote
Our buddies over at Engadget turned us on to this short video, in which modder Freddy Deeble created a sonic hybrid -- a pair of Bose headphones using an Apple inline remote.
If you're handy with a pair of wire cutters, a small screwdriver, and a soldering iron, then you can mimic how Mr. Deeble achieved the best of both worlds with his little mod. Not only does he get better audio quality from the over-the-ear Bose 'phones than he would from a standard pair of Apple earbuds or in-ear headphones, but he also gets to keep that sweet little inline "squeezably soft" remote.
TUAW, of course, takes no responsibility for any damage you may cause to your Bose headphones, your Apple earbuds with remote, or yourself if you do this. And your warranties? Consider 'em gone... Enjoy the video, and stay safe, kids.

HEADLINE NEWS: Someone soldered one thing to another. Wow. It's not like they make adapters that do the same thing (and thus work with all headphones) and are sold in just about every Target and Walmart out there...

If one ear is out of phase from the other, you'll get a weird pressure feeling from the sound. I"m assuming this is true with headphones as it's definitely true with speakers.
January 06 2010 at 7:22 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI have a pair of the Bose noise cancelling headphones, and the wire has it's own jack into the bottom of the headphones. I'm wondering if the wire inside would be easy to take apart and modify the same way as this. Only problem is that the solder and wire shrink wrap would be outside the headphones and more visible... but should be easier than taking apart the earcups.
These are $300 headphones, so I'm reluctant to be the first to try this mod unless I can get a spare cord somewhere for cheap.
Instead of wiring the remote directly to the headphones, wire them to another jack.
That way you can replace the headphones at will, or at least not damage them.
I've done this with Etymotic ER-6i buds. It is easy, they have better sound than Bose and they block a lot more sound than Bose "cancels."

wtf ?
Too bad Bose sound quality sucks.
January 06 2010 at 4:51 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMaybe so, but not nearly as bad as Apple's crap earbuds.
