Nexus One tips for iPhone users
Here's an interesting post from Scott Knaster, a happy iPhone user and Google employee who made a cold-turkey switch to the Nexus One for three months (yes, some employees can get their hands on things early). You might expect a Nexus One v. iPhone post from a Google employee to be slanted, but that's not the case here. Mr. Knaster obviously loves his iPhone, and offers practical tips for users looking to switch, like:
- You can simply move the SIM from iPhone to the N1. However, you won't get 3G on AT&T, only Edge. This hasn't been a big deal for me. And my iPhone data plan seems to work fine for the N1.
- I miss the iPhone's silence/ring switch, but you can silence the phone by swiping the volume control on the lock screen. If the phone is already on, hold down the Volume Down button to (silently) silence.

Scott Knaster... a blast from the past. He has been writing books about Mac programming going back at least to "Macintosh Programming Secrets" in 1987.

My iPhone has two, signal strength and battery status.
This Google thing has a lot to learn.
What would a direct connect button directly connect to? I have to say I like the slience switch.

While I would love to have an N1 to play around with, the fact remains that it's on the Android platform. With that said, the biggest point is the one he missed: it's all about the apps. There's just no way, after spending what I've spent on the iPhone and iTunes that I'm downgrading to an N1 and losing my apps. The iPhone syncs effortlessly with Mac and Windows, and I've made a serious investment in it. Nuff said on my part.

However, you're absolutely right on the investment aspect. I've paid a lot of some of my iPhone apps, and I have a lot of apps. I will most likely wait for an iPhone update and go that route in the future before I rebuy all the apps I love.

January 07 2010 at 12:50 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI find the same thing on o2. the latency appear to be much lower on the edge connection though bandwidth is obviously less. In the real world however the lower latency means that for low bandwidth applcations and browsing edge is often the better option.
January 07 2010 at 12:21 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAs others have said, the biggest issue for me is the lack of 3G on AT&T. The price isn't really an issue - I'll pay a lot for a good phone, but without 3G that really kills its value to me.
Granted AT&T's 3G isn't all that good at my house anyways, but when I'm out with my phone I appreciate the speed of 3G and the simultaneous voice & data.
Thx...i like the info. It is hard for me to walk away from 3G (i worry Edge just wont cut it in my location)...but nice to know i can move the sim to the N1 easy enough.
